Current News & Events / This evenings' rainbow
« on: June 24, 2009, 08:44:07 PM »
There's something about a rainbow that just stops me in my tracks.  Here are some pictures of this evenings rainbow in Fairfax.

This rainbow was in the sky for close to an hour.

At one point it almost looked as if a third rainbow was starting to form.  I don't know if that is possible.

Current News & Events / Re: Our Firemen Are Not Just Firemen
« on: June 02, 2009, 09:38:50 AM »
And not just in our own neighborhood.   We were returning from a girls spring soccer game in Lundow on Sunday and decided to travel on Rt. 100 for a scenic ride home.  Somewhere south of Warren we came upon a good size tree that stretched across both lanes of the road.  Lucky for us the two cars following ours were being driven by Fairfax fireman who quickly took charge by directing traffic, recruiting additional help from other stranded vehicles and removing the debris from the roadway.

We are truly fortunate to have such dedicated men and women from both fire and rescue volunteering their time to help in times of need.

Thanks to all of you for the service you provide.

Took a walk on the rec path this gorgeous late afternoon. Noticed a strong smell of skunk in the vicinity of the old gatehouse foundation and points east of there. Figured it must be coming from Mike's house :)

Never know ... the skies may clear.   If so I would look to the South - South West.

Should a rocket blast off on schedule early Tuesday evening from NASA's Wallops Island Flight Facility in Virginia, a potentially spectacular sight might be visible across a wide swath of the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, weather permitting.

Current News & Events / Re: Vandalism To Cars In Town

It probably isn't related at all, but I found a bicycle (girls) that was in the weeds over the side of the hill on Buck Hollow (about a mile up from 104). I was hoping someone would have some information so that it can be returned to whoever lost it. If anyone has any info or can claim it, let me know.

Political Issues/Comments / Re: gay marriage?
« on: March 21, 2009, 06:39:44 PM »
So very well said, Lisa! I hope this issue gets voted on, does not get vetoed by the governor, and gets put to rest once and for all. Why are people standing in the way? To each his own. Why are people feeling threatened by a redefinition of marriage? Heterosexual marriage as well as gay marriage is a completely personal issue. The choice of a same sex couple to marry is a choice that will not interfere with the day to day lives of me or anyone else but that couple. Let's recognize that and move on. We have much bigger fish to fry these days.

Current News & Events / Sugaring at Jean and Fern Rainville's
« on: March 08, 2009, 09:32:22 PM »
Sugaring at the Rainville's is an experience we look forward to each year.   This is the time of year when winter is waning and spring is in the air.  Jean and Fern are wonderful folks who share their stories and their hearts.   With no commitments to steal our time on a sunny Sunday afternoon in early March we happened upon nirvana for five glorious hours.  It was the social event of the month being among Jean and Ferns family, friends and neighbors.  Roasting hot dogs, tasting homemade treats , eating 'Sugar on Snow' and catching up with the news of friends filled our afternoon.  Oh, and yes we also helped with the syrup making.  We left the Sugar House with two gallons of Maple Syrup still warm knowing the sap was in the ground that very morning.  If you would like to see additional pictures you could click on the following link.  http://www.vtgrandpa.com/photos/Sugar-Time

If you view the pictures in the gallery try using the slideshow feature and adjust the time per frame accordingly.  Using the slideshow feature will present the pictures in somewhat of a chronological order.

Speaking of fire alarms ---  We live in a house where the fire alarms were not wired to an electrical circuit.  The fire alarms were installed in the bedrooms and in the basement but they were independent of one another.  To belabor the point if one alarm sounded the others in the house would not.   Well, I sort of like the idea of having the units tied together but didn't want to go through the hassle or the expense of placing them on their own hardwired circuit so I hunted around for an alternative. I came across units manufactured by First Alert.  These units can be linked together via RF so if one goes off they all do.  They are powered by two "AA" batteries which last two or three months.  Because the units are controlled by RF they are always "listening" for a distress call from one of its' peers hence the battery drain.  We have two in the basement, the bedrooms and the living area.   The batteries we use are rechargeable so when a pair runs down the unit "chirps" to warn us ( believe me it is annoying and you WANT to change the batteries ).  We change the batteries with a pair of charged rechargeable s and we are good to go.   Since we have a half dozen units we always seem to be changing one unit or another every couple of months at which time we always do a test.   The tests reassure us and our dog Meika gets a good howl.

PotterFXFDC1 -- Just wondering if you have had any experience with units like these?  Are they safe / effective?  There have been times ( cooking / excess smoke from the woodstove ) that the units have sounded but I was wondering if heavy smoke would interfere with the RF.

P.S.  Even though we test out units frequently throughout the year with battery changes we ALWAYS test on clock changing weekends.   Just to be sure. :-)
