Current News & Events / Re: All Is Calm - All Is Bright This Morning
« on: October 26, 2008, 08:12:40 AM »
Yup... that sure was some storm.  I was driving around town around 11:00 p.m. to pick up one of our daughters.  The rain was still coming down though the high winds and heavy rains of earlier in the day had dissipated. I was driving well under the speed limit as you never know around here when a tree or branch finds its way onto the roadway.

About our weather station.  The station is a little protected by of a hedge of trees so I'm not certain that it does register the full wind speed.  As for the rainfall amount .. there is a way to see what we received.  If you click on the summary button and look towards the bottom of the report.  The storm total is the amount of rain the station received from the latest storm.  A 'storm' is defined as all water collected WITHOUT a 24 hour interrupt.  So, if we get rain for six hours have a ten hour break and it starts to rain again the second batch of rain is totaled in the 'storm' event.  Once we have 24 hours of no rain the 'storm' total is reset to zero.  You might imagine that a storm event could last for days up here and you would be absolutely correct.  :-)    The total for yesterdays' storm is 1.14 inches. We happened to receive all of this on Saturday ( no spill over from Friday or Sunday).

Current News & Events / Re: Do You Use A TV Antenna???

To see what stations you "should" be ale to receive check out the following link:

http://antennaweb.org/aw/Welcome.aspx

When you get to the site click on the "Choose an antenna" button ... zip code is all that is needed on the next page ..  adjust the map to your actual location and you will be shown a list of available stations and what type of antenna should be able to pick the signal up ( UHF or VHF ). Of course picking up a signal has a lot to do with what your antenna will "see".  Unidirectional units are good if you have a rotor.  For systems without a rotor a multidirectional antenna may be a better choice.  A set of rabbit ears may be all you need.

Right you are Henry no frost up here this morning in fact haven't had any yet this season.  We did clean out the stove pipe over the weekend so we were able to have our first woodstove fire of the season.  Nice and warm here last night.

Yes, all the information presented on the page is local and reported by our station.  Would be nice if their default page would allow for more data such as Heat Index, Wind Chill , Dew Point , etc...
It's a home station.  The unit is made by DAVIS and so far the information is only loaded up to the DAVIS server.   Not sure what they do , if anything , with the data.  If you click on the 'Map' link while viewing our weather you will see many more similar stations around the world including one other in Vermont.  So far I'm not uploading the data to GLOBE or NOAA.  I'm working on uploading the data to CPOW which is an extension of NOAA.  No big deal to look at just a rain collector and an anemometer sitting on the roof.

Our house is at 770 feet of elevation so on clear still nights the "valley" always seems cooler than up on the hill.   We hit a low of 35 this morning.   BTW if interested in "local" conditions you can check out this site.   The station is here at the house.  http://www.weatherlink.com/user/fairfaxvt/

Current News & Events / State Troopers in town
« on: September 18, 2008, 07:29:23 PM »
Coming home today just past 3:00 we saw five State Troopers on Buck Hollow Road. Two of them had a truck pulled over. Another one stopped. Two more had just passed the area. I was just wondering if anyone had any idea what was going on to warrant such a large number of them in one area?

Current News & Events / Re: Gas Prices

Carolyn,
( Sorry, hit enter ).   Thanks for the info on the gas tax.  Use to be , way back when , you could pull up to the pump and see the breakdown of the total cost of a gallon of gas.  I don't seem to see that now.
So we have the Vermont State tax of $.20 / gallon and the Federal tax of ( $ some amount / gallon ).  Is there any other tax that is included in the total?  For example could there be a town tax ( I doubt it...) or a county tax ( possible ??).  Just wondering.

Current News & Events / Re: Yup!!! Its Wireless Communication Equipment
« on: August 15, 2008, 03:05:31 PM »
GlobalNet Internet Services http://www.surfglobal.net/ is another company that offers wireless Internet connections for Northern Vermont including parts of Fairfax.  We had them up at the house in early March.  Their testing revealed that we could "see" their signal but we were at the fringe of their limits.  Since the trees were not leafed out and since the trees were in line with their existing antenna they decided that we would not be a good candidate for their service ( they want to ensure customer satisfaction).    They did mention that they were looking to add an antenna on top of Georgia Mountain and at the time they were shooting for sometime in August.  Not sure if your post is about GlobalNet or yet another option.

Two things that we noticed from this accident...
First, our DSL now interestingly seems to have gone back to normal and isn't as slow as dial-up used to be...did they do someing???
And....Is it common practice to place the license plate of the vehicle that hit a pole onto the replacement pole? We noticed a license plate up there on the new pole and was curious.
