The folks at Fairpoint have set up a web site to track the demand for broadband in areas that are under served.
The assumption is they will base their build out on demand?

This web site looks suspcious to me. It does not link back to a Fair Point web site and does not really make clear who is responsible for this web site. I would be hesitant to provide my personal information via this web site.

I have written to Fair Point to get confirmation on whether this is a program they are supporting or not. I will post again if I hear anything back from them.

I too have sent a note to Fairpoint, even though the logo looks authentic and will also post if I get something back.

I did find a press release at http://www.telecomvt.org that mentions the web site, so this could be a legitimate form to fill out. The telecomvt web site is the home Vermont Telecomunications Authority.

The iwantmybroadbandfromfairpoint web site is not a secure website (https://) like you would see at a website you would make a purchase from online. They certainly did not spend a lot of time or effort to setup this site. There is no privacy policy or anything. There is nothing there that would make me feel like they were going to protect my personal information from being misused.

I don't mean to be a stick in the mud. I want broadband as much as the next person. It would just seem like they could have done a better job setting up this site and to make the consumer feel more comfortable.

I received the following note back from Fairpoint and sent her the link to this topic.  Don't know where Joe did get the web site address:

Dear Mr. Raymond,

Thank you for contacting FairPoint Communications regarding a possible bogus website. I have forwarded this on to the appropriate department for further investigation.

I was wondering if you were attempting to go to our www.fairpoint.com website and were re-directed or if you found it using a search engine such as Google or Yahoo search.

I did get that link from the Fairpoint press release in the VTA website... here's that link:

I did a "whois" for that domain name and it came up being owned by a broadband consultant out of Baltimore.

More importantly, all I gave them was my name, address and phone number, all info that, for me at least, is available in the public domain.  And that's the lesson to be learned here, if a website asks for any info that you don't want to share... don't share it.

Below is the response from Debra at Fairpoint - It is legit:

I have researched this issue and have found out that it is in fact our site. It is being used to track requests for broadband service in some of our more rural areas.
