Apparently the plane caught fire and the pilot parachuted out and was stuck in a tree.

HIGHGATE, Vt. —Vermont State Police say a small plane crash was reported on Interstate 89N in Highgate.


Northbound traffic is being closed at Exit 21 in Swanton and extending to the border. Motorists will need to seek alternative routes.

Police say no other information is available at this time.

WPTZ has a crew headed to the scene.

HIGHGATE, Vt. - The Franklin County Sheriff's Department has confirmed that a small plane has crashed on the interstate just after the Swanton exit (exit 21) on I-89.

Vermont State Police say northbound traffic is closed at Exit 21 in Swanton and extends up to the Canadian border. Motorists are urged to find alternate routes.

Police couldn't provide any additional information.

FOX 44 and ABC 22 has a crew headed to the scene and will provide updates when they become available.

  HIGHGATE, Vt. -
Vt. State Police say a single-passenger plane has crashed on Interstate 89 north in Highgate. Police got the 911 call at 12:12 p.m. about the crash near mile marker 125 north of exit 21 in Highgate. The initial reports said the plane was on fire.

A state airport official confirms that a single-engine aerobatic plane was in the vicinity of the Franklin County State Airport practicing, when its engine failed. The pilot parachuted to safety and the plane crashed.

We have no word yet on any injuries or damages.

Northbound traffic on I-89 is closed at Exit 21 in Swanton all the way to the Canadian border. Motorists should seek other routes.

Troopers from the St. Albans barracks are responding to a reported crash of a small airplane on Interstate 89, north in Highgate.  Northbound traffic is being closed at Exit 21 in Swanton, extending to the Canadian border.  Motorists will need to find alternate routes.

Update on Plane Crash in Highgate, VT

Highgate, VT - 04/18/14 - Emergency responders remain on scene of today's aircraft crash near mile marker 125, just north of Exit 21, Interstate 89.

First responders indicate that the plane crashed adjacent to the interstate; impacting traffic safety and thereby causing traffic to be delayed and rerouted. Crews have reopened a single lane of travel, northbound; however the right lane may be closed for an extended period of time.

Responders also have verified that the single occupant of the aircraft, the pilot, sustained minor injuries after parachuting to safety and is being provided medical treatment.

Members from the Vermont State Police Bureau of Investigation, along with Vermont Agency of Transportation, are responding to the scene. The Federal Aviation Administration, out of the Maine office, has been notified and will conduct a further investigation.

No other details are available at this time; as the crash remains under investigation. An update will be issued as new information becomes available.

Highgate, VT - 04/18/14 - Today at approximately 12:12PM, the Vermont State Police received a 911 call regarding a plane crash on Interstate 89 in the northbound lane, near mile marker 125, north of exit 21 in the town of Highgate. Initial reports indicated the single passenger plane was fully engulfed in flames and someone parachuted out prior to crashing.

Traffic will be redirected off the interstate, while emergency crews extinguish the fire and provide medical care. Please find alternative routes.

At this time we cannot confirm injuries, occupants, type of plane, cause of the crash... or any other details until the scene is rendered safe and crews are able to initiate an investigation.

Updates will be provided as possible.
