December Events at the Fairfax Community Library

Events are free to the public unless otherwise noted. Some programs require pre-registration.

Tuesday, December 3, 9:30-10:30 am: Preschool Story Hour: Magnets
Join us for themed stories, songs, and activities for ages 0-6. Free.

Tuesday, December 3, 3:00-4:00 pm: Chess Club
Our winter chess club kicks off this week. All are welcome. Play to your heart’s delight every Tuesday . Receive expert advice from a skilled instructor. Boards and chess pieces are provided. (Though you can bring your own!)  Ages 6 to adult.
 Wednesday December 4, 3-4 pm: After-school Craft with Nicole: 
Join Nicole Vance, local artist, for this fun activity! We’ll be using masking tape as a resist with watercolors to create a forest sunrise scene. Free, ages 6+.   Pre-register at the library. Limit of 15 registrants.

Thursday, December 5, 6:00-7:30 pm PJ Story Hour and Craft
Join us for this special event:  ”Webster’s Christmas”, a puppet show presented by the Traveling Storyteller.

Saturday, December 7, 10 – noon: Wreathmaking
Join Helen Fersing as you make a basic wreath or swag. $10 payable at class. Decorations to customize your wreath or swag will be available for purchase. Pre-register. Limit 16 participants. Ages 8 – adult.

Tuesday, December 10, 9:30-10:30 am: Preschool Story Hour: Counting and Comparing
Join us for themed stories, songs, and activities for ages 0-6. Free.

Tuesday, December 10, 3:00-4:00 pm: Chess Club

Wednesday, December 11, 3:15-4:15  R.E.A.D. to a Dog
Kids can read a book of their choice to a fuzzy, friendly dog. To sign-up for a 15-minute time slot, call 849-2420 or stop by the library. Ages 5-10. Must pre-register.

Friday, December 13, 7:00-8:30   Magic Show!
Join Marko the Magician in a super show for the entire family. Bring your cameras; there will be an opportunity for kids to learn a few tricks after the show!  In the multi-purpose room at BFA.

Saturday, December 14, 10:00-noon Let’s Paint Pottery
Nichole Cunningham is back with another pottery painting session. $10 payable at class. Note: The pieces will need to be glazed off-site, and will be available for pick-up at the library December 21, between 10 and 1 or December 23 between 9 and 5:30. Must pre-register. Limit 16 participants. Ages 2 to adult . Children under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult.  Paints are non-toxic and water soluble.

Tuesday, December 17, 9:30-10:30 am: Preschool Story Hour: Chickens and Eggs- with Special Guest Farmer Virginia
Join us for themed stories, songs, and activities for ages 0-6. Free.

Tuesday, December 17, 3:00-4:00 pm: Chess Club

Tuesday, December 17, 6-7:30:  Make Paper Ornaments with the Family.
Annette Hansen, local artist, will lead a workshop of easy paper ornaments. The class is designed for parents and kids to enjoy together. Must pre-register. Limited to 20 participants.  Ages 6 to adult.

December 23: 9-5:30;  CLOSED December 24, 25 and 26. December 27: 9-3:15, December 28: 9-1:00
December 30: 9-5:30;  CLOSED December 31 and January 1. January 2, 2014:  resume regular hours.
