I live right on Main Street here in Fairfax. I came home from work tonight and as I was walking to the door I looked back toward my car and saw something move on the other side of the hedges just off the lawn. I stopped to see what it was as there has been loose dogs and cats around before. To my surprise, the critter turned and ran up the driveway and onto Main Street. It ran into the streetlight and to my surprise it was a large red fox! I whistled and he stopped and looked at me for a second, then turned and ran north right up the yellow line of the road. Trying to find a meal amidst the snow I suppose.

Now, he looked healthy and it was at night, but just wanted to give people a heads up that I saw it right in town. If you do see it during the day you should call someone (not sure who in town) because it may be rabid, as foxes are nocturnal. Those of you who have small children and pets may just want to keep an eye on them when outdoors.

Josh, you up for getting the call if someone sees this thing out during the day?

There are foxes around; it is so warm.  I have seen their tracks in the snow on our land. You will see them on occasion during the day, but usually in the early morning. Only rarely have I seen any during the day.
Probably not rabid unless they are behaving erratically.  To contact the local game warden you have to call the state police dispatcher and that person will contact the game warden for you.

I saw the main st Fox this morning, about 8:30.  On Main in front of the Funeral Home, he then cut up a driveway and disappeared.

I'm not the Constable any more but if someone really needs help with a Fox I don't mind.  There are a few running around behind your house, I saw at least 3 different ones during deer season down in that area.  All apeared to be healthy and to be honest they were fun to watch,  Gave me something to look at cause I sure as hell wasn'y seeing deer LOL.
