The night before Halloween used to be called Cabbage Night, and when I was a teen, that was the night kids went out and were destructive. (not on Halloween itself) It was all kinds of kids back then. (except me...my mom wasn't letting me out the front door of my house to be arrested and taken to the fire station) I wouldn't generalize and say my peers out there were not involved with sports...because most of them were. I wouldn't generalize and say they didn't do well in school either, because most of them did. I'm glad nobody got hurt, and that things are better now. (I know teens used to raid our vegetable garden on Hunt Street for rotten veggies to be used as projectiles, and one year some man drove all around our back field chasing after some kids with his car.) Glad your Halloween was full of treats, and not so many tricks!

If you have any pics, song requests, other creative ideas please email them to Jennifer at: we3mcg@metrocast.net. That's a really great article, Henry! Thanks for sharing it, I enjoyed reading it! (the part about the donuts and freshly baked goods made me laugh!) Suzy

Amy Novak, Barbara Howell, Pam Medor, Linda Ledoux, and I have all found ourselves in these photos! (At least I think that's me...) We've been having lots of fun sharing them on the Things i Remember About Growing Up in Fairfax Facebook page! Thanks again! So fun! Mike, let's see your parade photos! Suzy

Okay, I was right with some of my guesses... I remember the parades went around twice. You watched it once, and were in it once! I remember 1976's bicentennial themed parade. Happy Summer!

Little Red Riding Hood looks like Cynthia LeClair to me. I think I see Linda Woodward, Barbara Howell, and Lori Boissoneault in the 4H photo. I recognize the shirts they are wearing as shirts we probably made in 4H, because I sorta remember making one. I kinda think I'm in the photo on the right in the back too, but that girl is so skinny, it never could have been me....funny I can't recognize what I think is myself....
I'm pretty sure the tallest person in the band is a McNall.
Lots of "sorta"'s and "kinda,"'s in my comments, I know... I love these photos!! It's so fun to see all the old cars. (Yes, the sign says Carpenter of Fairfax, although I don't know who that would be) It's also fun to see the lay of the land and the lack of houses in the backgrounds, and remember tromping over every square inch of that open space, and ice skating on Fireman's Pond....
Thanks for the walk down Memory Lane! Love to you all, Suzy

Thanks for all the answers! I wondered how it could have happened with insurance involved. I think it broadened the world for a lot of kids, as well as taught them a healthy sport. We've been having a blast on the "Things I remember about growing up in Fairfax," FB page with many walks, (and laughs!) down Memory Lane! Suzy

We were talking about how we used to get out of school early on Wednesdays and go skiing at Smuggler's Notch. What a great thing that was! It got a lot of kids skiing who otherwise would not have had the chance. I think I only got to go in fifth grade, and then they stopped doing it. Mr. Brown, are you out there? How did that program get started, and why did it stop? Thanks, Sooz
