Current News & Events / You don't want to miss The Wizard of Oz
« on: November 06, 2013, 08:48:02 PM »
It has been 75 years since Frank Baum's beloved story of The Wizard of Oz first graced the big screen. Since that time, it has become a favored classic, with nearly every adult alive knowing what lies over the rainbow and agreeing that there's no place like home.
It has been 10 years since the late Richard Hanson brought this story to life in Fairfax. His hard work and dedication created a show that many still remember. In many ways, that show was the beginning of a very vibrant drama program within the halls of BFA. Students currently have the ability to wet their feet in the dramatic arts at 8 years of age and continue right through their senior year. The program grows in number each and every year.
It has become tradition to bring a musical to life on the BFA stage each fall. If you've been fortunate, you've seen the amazing recent performances of The Beauty and the Beast, Willy Wonka, Seussical, and last year, The Little Mermaid. This year, we bring you The Wizard of Oz. Almost 50 of our current Fairfax students have been working since August on this year's BFA Dramatic Arts Ensemble's production. The show hits the stage next week and tickets are now on sale.
Come support the hard work of some amazing kids and enjoy a quality local show which promises to please.

Thursday, November 14th, at 7:00pm
Friday, November 15th, at 7:00pm
Saturday, November 16th, at 2:00pm and 7:00pm

You may purchase tickets by calling 849-6711. Seats are $10 for adults, $8 for students. Don't delay, our shows sell out quickly!

Yes, they are Sand Hill Cranes. There has been a resident pair in the vicinity of Fairfield Swamp for a few years now and they are grand to see. These are probably the ones from Fairfield. Although their range is mostly in the Midwest, Vermont does have sightings of these birds. There has been another pair reported in the Bristol area.

The minutes of the June meeting are not posted yet, however if you watch the LCATV video of the meeting http://www.lcatv.org/program/fairfax-school-board-14 you will see at about minute 197 and then again at minute 203 that the board decided to cancel their August 12th meeting, since they will be attending the retreat the week before, and have any needed business for the month take place at the retreat on Wednesday, August 7th, from noon to 5:00.

It is interesting that Mr. Kirsch claims he was not contacted by any students regarding this matter, because I know for a fact that a letter about the issue was sent to Mr. Clark, Mr. Kirsch, and the Schoolboard Chair from an officer of the senior class speaking for the senior class. Did the press get it wrong? Or was someone not telling the truth? And if someone wasn't telling the truth, you have to ask yourself why.

Contrary to the administration's belief, it is a big deal. The kids did suffer over this event, and I know because my daughter was one of them. There were many seniors who were angry and frustrated. The courageous few tried to stand up and fight for what they believed was right. Many tears were shed. The students, mine being one of them, felt powerless to the force that was in front of them telling them he would not bend. They were not told why. They have been taught the process of democracy and this was to be a democratic process. They followed the BFA tradition of nominating those mentors that they connected the most to during their high school years. Mr. Woodley was the majority's choice and he was barred from speaking without a clear reason to the students other than he doesn't align with the mission statement. Whatever it was that happened between Mr. Clark, Mr. Kirsch, and Mr. Woodley that led to Mr. Woodley's resignation, it was between them, and it had nothing to do with the students who adored Mr. Woodley and wanted him to speak at their high school graduation. And they are the one's who are suffering. They are leaving with a bitter taste in their mouth. Shame on the administration. In my opinion, it was handled very poorly all around. In the end, what did this really teach them about democracy?
It's time the Fairfax community wakes up and realizes what has happened and continues to happen to their beloved school.

I was hoping I would get a little more than this, but this is the written response I received in response to my comments at the last meeting. I know many of you were hoping to hear the Boards perspective on what happened so I felt it was appropriate to post their response to my public comment. It sounds as if we're left to just trust that they are making independent wise decisions. And for the record, I was not unwilling to meet with the superintendent and board chair to discuss this. The board chair was unwilling to be part of this meeting. She felt the superintendent "is directly responsible for the daily oversight of our school which does include communication and coordination with the school board." I was demanded to attend a meeting with the superintendent (without the board chair) on a day and time that I had previously told Mr. Kirsch (twice) that I was unable to attend. I was told failure to be there would be an indication of my intent to resign. Am I wrong to feel harassed? Am I wrong in feeling I deserve more of an explanation from the board?

Julie,

I did respond to you in a very timely fashion.  Our meeting was on Monday, November 14th and I responded to you the next day.  Here was my response.

I want to thank you again for sharing your thoughts with the board and the public at our meeting on Monday.  We did discuss this situation in executive session.  Though our conversation is protected information since it was in executive session, I can assure you that your concerns were addressed with thoughtful deliberation.  If you feel your allegations of bullying and harassment merit a complaint, I would ask that you review our policy on Harassment of Personnel (you can find this in the policy section on the FWSU website).

You are correct that 16 V.S.A. #554 allows for a written response as to the reasons an action was taken by the board.  No action was taken by the board.  You chose to resign rather than meet with the superintendent and myself to discuss the issue as was suggested.  As I stated in my original email, your questions as to how we as a board work with the superintendent were addressed in executive session.  After lengthy discussion and thoughtful deliberation we are committed to continuing our collaborative work with the supervisory union, our superintendent and administrative team.

We are grateful to involvment from our community as we continue to move forward with the challenge of balancing the needs of our school, students and community.

I'll be there tonight.  I heard the cast is 'up to something' so I'm looking for something 'unusual' tonight.

I was at last night's performance and it was great !!!  Loads of fun, color and dance.  The kids do a great job of entertaining.

The doors open at 6:30 PM but when I arrived at 6:20 PM or so the line was already out of the high school lobby door and was spilling out onto the sidewalk.  For folks who do intend to see the play and plan to buy the tickets at the door plan on getting there extra early.

And for your viewing pleasure --- a few more of the cast members ...
