7f24,

Karen's point about the bus garage was noted and I will make certain that it is represented as things move forward and while I cannot speak for the entire board, I will do my utmost to assure that should an outside contractor be utilized and should they desire to utilize the bus garage it will be done so at no cost to the town/school.  They would need to rent that space.  The board will be informing the SU board that we want to build a case for Fairfax to maintain the bus fleet.  I believe there could be some creative solutions that make our bus fleet cost efficient and effective for the SU but they will need to be researched and compared. The SU board will then decide what is best for the entire SU.

Just to be clear, The Consolidation of Transportation is listed on the Agenenda as a discussion item and not an action item.  Vaughn Altemus is coming to speak to the board about the consolidation requirements.  This will provide the board with the basic information to do further research and in the future make an informed decision on future courses of action.

Hopefully you both can attend the meeting tomorrow and be part of the discussions.

What I mean is more people came out to vote then the past 2 votes. My other point is the budget should not be passed when their are obvious cuts that were made after they took a closer look. So if it passed the first time around we as tax payers would have been paying for things that were not needed as discussed in the posted new budget plan. I believe their is still more work to do to continue to be fiscal responsible and always look at effective ways to keep costs down while giving the children an adequate education without the main focus on teacher benefits and union demands over the children's education.

I too was pleased with the high turn out. It's great to see people doing their civic duty. While I understand your position on fiscal restraint, I think it is important to remember that  voted budgets are a balance of what is needed and what the town can support and that the minimum budget is not always the best answer.  Just ask anyone who has served in the military about products or services from the lowest bidder.

Oh look people came out out to vote. I hope this year sends a message to the school.

What do you mean by this? What lesson  do you think should be learned?

I am in DC today for work, but will be watching for results please post as soon as possible after the count.  I already voted by absentee ballot.

Is it possible for a committee to be formed specifically pertaining to the union contract and negotiations? Perhaps overseen by the school board but comprised of interested residents? I would consider being a part of it and I bet Tom would too :)

I am not certain what the definitive answer on this is but will try find out.  Personally I think this should be left in the hands of the board, this is one of the task that you elected them to do and they do it and do it in a way that represents the town.  There are a lot of particulars that are discussed during negotiations which have second and third order effects on school business and town people may or may not  be tuned in on those. Also having too many people involved in any negotiation usually is a bad idea, kind of a too many cooks spoil the soup situation.  Just my thoughts...

The latest budget represents a 2% increase from last years budget and a reduction of approximately $285,000.  Getting down to 2% was acheived by many areas tightening the belt.  The big changes were as follows:

Removing the Special Education Administrator from the budget
Changing the replacement plans for IPADs from a three year cycle to a four year cycle
Removal of 4 paraeducator positions (A required time to personnel assesment was completed which showed the school was over staffed with paraeducators)

There is a budget presentation set for May 21st and the revote will take place on May 28th

That's because no decisions were made until tonight.

It is funny that they say it was made clear it is not an issue on salaries and that is what appears to be the #1 complaint on the the forum.

I don't think anyone said that salaries wasn't an issue, I think what was said is that those can't be changed without renegotiations.

They can't, a contract was signed and it can't be changed without renegotiation, the only option  the board has is to reduce staff.

This is why we need to start somewhere. This is only the beginning. http://www.wcax.com/story/25157355/vt-house-approves

This is actually a reduction to their originally forecasted 7 cent increase, still an increase but 4 cents instead of 7 cents.

Maybe I missed it but where did anything in this say anything about giving up control of our government?  I am not even certain it said anything more than we need to have laws in place covering the sale of small arms.   I didn't even need to read the list to know that Sanders and Leahy were on it.  Really there's nothing shocking here...
