Political Issues/Comments / Budgets
« on: January 13, 2010, 10:40:22 AM »
Monday night both the Select board and the School board sat at a table in an effort to provide for the needs of Fairfax.
Some of the discussion was heated, but all were in agreement that the goal is to best serve our community in hard times.
I would just like us all to think about how truly wealthy most of us are.
We have heated and plumbed homes, food and phones as well as so many other of life's necessities.
Haiti is a very poor country, people who truly had very little to nourish their lives have lost even that.
As we look at trimming our lives to meet new budget constrictions, let us all remember we are privileged.
And try to do our best to help those who aren't.
As Mike Cain stated in his blog today, "things could be a lot worse".

Leave it to Mike to be posting from Pre-op.
Glad you are enjoying the "view" before heading in for the surgery.
I am thinking of you.

I have to respond because using today's temperature to deny Climate Change pushed one of my buttons.
The term Global Warming is not inaccurate, because the world is warming, ie. ice caps melting, but it doesn't mean there is no cold weather.
In reality, as in Florida, climates are fluctuating.   The cause may be in dispute but weird weather is a reality.

Announcements / Wedding: Christopher Murphy and Susan Fredholm
« on: December 13, 2009, 08:15:10 PM »
Susan Fredholm and Christopher Murphy were married on October 11, 2009 on a sunny fall afternoon at Zorvino Vineyards in Sandown, NH.

Susan (Alvirne High School 2001) and Chris (Bellows Free Academy 2001) met as members of the first graduating class of Olin College of Engineering in Needham MA. Following Olin, they both completed Master’s degrees at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Susan is now a consultant for PE Americas, an environmental life cycle assessment firm in Boston.

Chris is performing doctoral research in underwater robotics with MIT and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The bride is the daughter of Nancy Fredholm and the late Kenneth Fredholm of Hudson, NH. The groom is the son of Barbara Murphy and the late Michael Murphy of Fairfax, VT.

The Maid of Honor was Susan’s sister, Jennifer, and the bridesmaids were Chris’ sister, Kathryn, and college friends Que Anh Nguyen and Jessica Anderson. The Best Man was Chris’ longtime friend Aaron Vallett and groomsmen were college friends Adam Horton, Dan Lindquist and Mike Curtis. Another college friend of the couple, Jay Gantz, played the cello for their ceremony.

The ceremony was officiated by NH Justice of the Peace, Jane Rokes, and included readings by both Jennifer and Kathryn. The outdoor ceremony was followed with an indoor reception at Zorvino Vineyards.

The couple enjoyed a honeymoon in the Caribbean islands of Saint Martin and Saba before returning to their new home in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Current News & Events / Re: Candy Makers In Vermont
« on: November 29, 2009, 01:21:39 PM »
Snowflake Chocolates, in Jericho, is one of my family's favorite confectioners.  They make their own candy canes as well as many other of the wonderful sweets they sell.

First of all I have to apologize for starting the incorrect naming of the Stephens as the Godfreys, I have always confused Godfrey's last and first names.  I would also like to lodge my concern about reacting out of frustration to the current climate of vandalism and theft with violence.  As a community it is wonderful to be alert to anyone who may be where they don't belong but the best response is not violence.  There are other ways to react.

The neighborhood watch thing is great, but the "strangers" might have been Godfrey and Marcella.  They were in town on their way to Montreal and then a large family reunion.

I just want to once more testify to the value of your website to our community.  I have a freezer that has been sitting in my basement for 6 years unplugged.  This program you have identified for us is going to send a couple of people to collect it from my home (from the basement no less), take it away to responsibly dispose of it and then send me $30.  A win win here!

General Discussion / Re: Why Push For Amtrack - No Real Advantages??
« on: March 24, 2009, 05:00:39 PM »
Train travel is environmentally friendlier than many other methods of travel and I believe it is time to include that as an element of any equation as to the value of a transit system.  My daughter has used it several times to get home from DC and then back.  It is a long trip but often the price is substantially less than flying and she is able to do work on her computer during the ride since they have outlets to plug into.  I believe our country needs to take a long look at our infrastructure.  We have let our travel ways languish without proper repair for too long.  It is time to dedicate resources to the repair of our roads, bridges and railways.

I am curious if there is a plan to take down the ornaments and put "Christmas" to bed now that it is spring.  It was a lovely event at the time but now it is past.

Current News & Events / Re: Lost Dog - Please Help
« on: March 23, 2009, 04:25:29 PM »
update:
the dog has been identified and reconnected with its owner
thanks to everyone for caring and for Henry for making this form of notification available

Surveys are interesting.   I would be curious if the question was phrased "is spirituality an important part of your life" as opposed to religion.  Many people will deny being religious, equating that with formal church/synagogue attendance but have deep personal faith beliefs.

254
This is what I sent to our legislators, I suggest anyone who cares send their thoughts, ASAP!

I am writing to ask you to vote no on the extension
request for the switchover.  The country is running
out of money for many urgent projects, but cannot
shelve them all.  This changeover has been extremely
well advertised.  It is human nature to put off
action, but in our new administration I have heard the
call for responsibility.  It would be the responsible
thing to say a deadline is a deadline, too many of us
as private citizens and public broadcasters have
planned for this deadline.

When the coupon program was introduced it was made
clear from the start that citizens should not wait to
the last minute, coupons were in limited supply.  As a
compromise gesture to those who have waited to buy the
converter box perhaps the expiration date on the
coupons could be extended/lifted.  If the coupon was
issued there is money to back it.

Owning a TV is not a necessity to life, it is a
luxury.  We need to remember what truly needs the
focus of our governments resources, those who have no
roof over their heads or food for their stomachs. I
ask that you consider my argument and vote no on the
bill to move the digital transition date.

255
Just felt I needed to add a thought here.  I wrote to our Senators and Representative asking them not to vote for this bill.  I am sure they heard many more voices crying that they weren't prepared, but there is still time to send a message to Rep Welch.  The house has not yet voted.
