For a good overview of ereaders on the market see
http://gizmodo.com/5708528/what-you-need-to-know-when-buying-an-e+book-reader

The article mentions library compatibility for the Sony Reader, but please note that our free ebook downloads from www.listenupvermont.org
are compatible with many other devices as well, including the Nook.

Reviews / Ereader info from Gizmodo

Here's a brief but informative article from www.gizmodo.com about the variety of ereaders available and what their
features and file type mean.  If you are considering buying one for yourself or someone on your gift list this season but need
some clarity on how to choose among ereaders, this is a good place to start.

Sony Reader and Nook etc. accept a wider variety of file types such as EPUB.  Kindle uses a proprietary file type and so you can only use the e-books purchased from Amazon.  This is unfortunate for the user.  Another advantage of Nook is you can share books with other users for 14 days.
The Fairfax Community Library now offers FREE ebook downloads at www.listenupvermont.org to our patrons.  (There is also a link there to Project Guttenberg which has many titles that are out-of-copy write and so available to all, free.)  There is a list of compatible devices at listenupvermont.org.  They include the Nook and Sony but NOT Kindle of course.

Hope that's helpful info for your Christmas gift decisions!

SNOW DAYS AT THE LIBRARY

We will try to have the library OPEN for you when school is cancelled due to weather, with the following exceptions:
•   We will open at 9:00 a.m.
             (Rather than 8:00)
•   If a snow day falls on a Friday the library will be CLOSED.  (On Fridays there is no town employee at the library.)
It’s never a bad idea to call ahead and check if we are open if the weather is awful!  Call 849-2420 or the school office at 849-6711.

« on: November 20, 2010, 04:58:04 PM »
If you haven't been in to the library lately, stop by and take a look at all our new titles.  Bestsellers, Indie picks,
adventure non-fiction, cookbooks, mysteries, and more.  We also have about a half dozen new audio books on CD - great for those long
car, plane or train trips!  Several new titles for adults are in on Playaway too.  (Playaways are small, self contained audio players with one complete book that run on the included batteries and come with a set of ear buds.)
For a complete list of the titles you can also check our webpage - http://www.bfafairfax.com/pages/communitylibrarynews.htm
Click on "New Books Coming in November" - most have arrived.

For the week of Thanksgiving we will be open our usual hours on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday.  Closed Thursday and Friday.

So, open hours for the week of Nov. 22-27 are:
Monday 8:00 - 3:15
Tuesday 8:00 - 8:00
Wednesday 8:00 - 3:15
Saturday 9:00 - 12:00 noon

Happy Holiday everyone!

Current News & Events / Re: Library News
« on: November 03, 2010, 08:37:56 AM »
Hello from your new town librarian and sorry about the confusion.  The question we are asking is only about changing the distribution of our open hours when school is not in session.  There are no proposed cuts to the hours the library is open.  This is not related in any way to the school budget cuts being proposed.

Many public libraries open at 9 or 10 in the morning  and offer more afternoon/evening hours than we currently do.  Our history as a combined library is no doubt the reason for our current schedule.  My goal with this mini-survey is to try and find out if a majority of people would prefer to keep our current hours or have the library open later in the morning and later in the afternoon on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday WHEN SCHOOL IS CLOSED.  We are already open 8:00 am to 8:00 pm on Tuesdays and Thursday and that will not change.
Again, this change would not impact our budget or the number of staff hours the town pays for.
So, would you prefer:
M, W, F 8:00-3:15 or
M, W, F 10:00-5:15
with T, Th & SAT remaining unchanged.
Would you like the hours changed during school vacations, summer or both?  Or are you happy with the current schedule year round?

Our current hours are:
M, W, F 8:00 - 3:15
T, TH 8:00 - 8:00
Sat. 9:00 -12:00

You can call 849-2420, email to fairfaxlibrarian@gmail.com or stop by with your response, or any questions.

Thanks for your input!
Debbie Landauer, Town Librarian
