Current News & Events / Clint Paquin Dies At Age 78

St. Albans – Clinton E. Paquin a lifelong resident of this area passed away Thursday, February 8th, 2018, at the Franklin County Rehab Center following a brief illness.

Born in Sheldon on August 27th, 1939, he was one of twelve children to the late Ambrose and Florence (Gilbert) Paquin. Clint was 78 years old.

On February 15th, 1958, he married Pauline Plante, who survives him.  They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on February 15th, 2018.

Clint was a 1957 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and 2 years later he began a career of 55 years with Paquin Motors, retiring in 2015.  In 1964, he and Pauline bought Pleasant Acres Farm in Fairfax, which is still operated by their family. Clint was a former member of Lodge #1090, LOOM, St. Albans Lodge #1566, BPOE, The Owl Club and Fraternal Order of Eagles, #4218 - Arrowhead.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline, of St. Albans; their daughters and husbands, Kathy and Jay Guertin of Laconia, New Hampshire and Emily and Rett Heald of St. Albans and daughter-in-law, Maria Paquin of Fairfax. Clint is also survived by his grandchildren, Nicholas Guertin, Erin Caruso and Joe, Chris Heald and Danielle, Meghan Howrigan and Peter, Beth Ann Paquin and Dustin Snyder and Dylan Paquin, as well as his great-grandchildren, Lillian and Harrison, Harper and Chloe, Stella, and Ava and Shay.

Clint is also survived by his brother, Burton Paquin, Sr. of Swanton and sister, Theresa Gearty of Massachusetts and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Clint was pre-deceased by his son, Gilbert C. Paquin on September 14th, 2007, and his brothers, Maurice John, Chester, Ambrose, Jr., Clifford and Alton and his sisters, Phyllis Jarvis, Gladys Cormier, Joyce Bishop and Hilda LaBombard.

Relatives and friends will honor and celebrate Clint’s life by attending calling hours on Wednesday, February 14th, 2018, from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Private interment will take place at the family lot in Fairfax Plain Cemetery.

Clint’s family asks that memorials be in the way of contributions to either the Franklin County Animal Rescue, 30 Sunset Meadow, St. Albans, Vermont 05478 or to Fairfax Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 428, Fairfax, Vermont 05454.

Fairfax, Holly O’Harra, 76 of Fairfax passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, January 24, 2018 in the Franklin County Health and Rehabilitation Center in St. Albans.

Holly was born May 16, 1941 in San Francisco, CA, the daughter of the late Alan Marion Heckman and Ann Tappan.

Holly was unequivocally the definition of class and elegance. She enjoyed jazz music and had a deep appreciation for fine art, but more importantly the stories behind them. Wherever Holly lived, she would turn it into her own beautiful gallery, which told her story and showcased many important memories and experiences in her life and throughout her journey. She had an uncanny gift for gardening and interior decorating, which was inspired by her love of flowers and design. What Holly saw as solely a hobby, was highly regarded and desired by others all over and featured in magazines across the state of Washington, including the prominent and well-established Better Homes magazine whose readers look to for inspirational posh décor. Anything she touched was truly magnificent. She lived a life most could only dream of and enjoyed the finer things that life had to offer.

She is survived by her children, David Maclean of Langley, Washington, Tracy Maclean of Seattle, Washington, John Shannon and his wife, Shawna of Wasilla, Alaska and Shelly Pottala and her husband, Lafe of Fairfax, Vermont; Her grandchildren, Rachael, Jenae, Andrew, Lafe and Koben; Her dear friend Billy Israel of Montreal and her loving dog, Stella.

SWANTON – Walter Labrie, age 81, passed away unexpectedly on January 13, 2018 at his home in Swanton.

He was born May 31, 1936 in Franklin, VT, the son of the late Steve & Elaine (Bates) Labrie.

Although he lived his life with a hearing disability, he worked in Manchester, NH as a meat cutter and then Wright Construction in Franklin, VT, until he retired. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting & fishing.

Walter is survived by his brother John Labrie and wife Ramona of Fletcher; several nieces & nephews, his aunts, Polly Labrie of St. Albans and JoAnne Grondahl of Lake Worth, FL. He also leaves behind his special furry friend of 15 years, his cat Jack.

In keeping with Walter’s wishes, there will be no public services. His final resting place will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Franklin.

William “Bill” Fay, better known as “Bing” to the family, a lifelong resident to the area, passed away Sunday, January 14th, 2018 with his loving wife by his side.

Born August 30, 1942, in St. Albans, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Gladys (McKinney) Fay. Bill was 75 years old.

Bill was a graduate of BFA St .Albans. On March 25, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Donna (Frazier) Fay who survives him.

Bill was a very dedicated man and proud of his career in the United States Air Force. He loved hunting, fishing and watching deer. He also enjoyed painting deer pictures and working with wood. He was an avid fan of John Wayne and knew every movie John Wayne had appeared in.

Survivors include his wife Donna Fay; daughter, Cindy Sweeney and her husband, Scott Sweeney; sister, Rita Fay; brother-in-law, Bruce Frazier; granddaughter, Jessica Kohler and her fiancé, Jeff Stewart; and great-grandson, Benjamin Kohler. Bill was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Fay. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews as well as many friends and fond memories of Cottonwood Cove Campground.

Visiting will be Saturday, January 20th, 2018 in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans from 10:00 AM until 12 Noon, followed by a funeral service. Rev. Megan Stowe, Pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church, will officiate. At the conclusion of the services, Military Honors will then be accorded the Air Force Veteran.

Colleen Toof Blake
       Colleen T Blake, 86 of Fairfax died peacefully Wed. Jan. 10, 2018 at the Manor in Morrisville, Vt.

       Colleen was born September 27, 1931 in St Albans, Vt., the daughter of the late Arthur and Ruth Rounds Toof.  She is predeceased by her husband Dean W Blake and her brother Arthur D Toof Jr. She attended B.F.A. Fairfax, and was married on July 15, 1950 at the United Methodist Church of Fairfax. Colleen had a love for music, played the piano, sang at many weddings and was a member of the church choir. She also performed with the Barber Shoppers and a member of The Eastern Stars.

She is survived by her children, Dean W. Blake Jr. of St Albans, Christine Blake Rainville and her husband Claude, Jeff Blake and his wife Johanna of Fairfax. She is survived by 5 Grandchildren, 11 Great grandchildren, and 10 Nieces and Nephews, who will all miss her dearly.

     Funeral services will be held at the Minor Funeral Home on Monday January 15, 2018 at 2 pm with a Social gathering to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Colleen's memory to a charity of one’s choice.

     The family would like to give a special thanks to the nurses and staff at the Manor for the excellent care they provided.

He was born on March 3, 2006 in St. Albans to Thomas & Renee (Boudreau) Pattee.

Colby accomplished a lot in his 11 years. He was an excellent outdoorsman; he loved to hunt and fish. He had a tremendous work ethic; he would regularly take care of the animals at his grandfather’s barn. He made a difference in the lives of others with his compassion and genuine kindness. Colby would give the shirt of his back to anyone that needed it. Aside from hunting and fishing, his favorite hobbies were hanging out with friends, playing soccer and going to camp to play cards with Pepe V.

He is survived by his parents, Thomas & Renee Pattee, his brother, Dylan Pattee and his best friend, CoJak Pattee all of Enosburg; paternal grandparents, Bill & Rachel Pattee of Enosburg; maternal grandmother, Charlene Boudreau of Poinciana, FL; aunt, Terri Deuso and her children, Brendan & Aleta and their father Keith Deuso all of Enosburg; uncle Kris Boudreau and his daughter, Elle Boudreau both of Port Orchard, WA; special friend, Tyler Elwood; his special “uncles”, Al Burnor and his wife Debbie, Jody Kane and his girlfriend, Christine Frost and Scott Howard and his wife Kelli and many great aunts & uncles. Colby was predeceased by his great grandparents, Charles & Frances Vaillancourt, Ruth Pattee, Arthur Toof and Dorcas & Clarence Boudreau and his hunting partner, Donny Messier.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 4, 2018 from 3-5:00 PM at Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave., Enosburg Falls. A funeral service will be held at the conclusion of visiting hours with Rev. Dr. Jason McConnell officiating.

SWANTON – John F. Tougas, age 87, peacefully passed into the next life on Thursday, December 28, 2017 surrounded by his loving family at his home in Swanton.

He was born November 14, 1930 in Pike River, Quebec to the late Aristide & MaryAnne (Samson) Tougas.

John married Imedla (Rainville) Tougas on May 15, 1954. They owned and operated Johnny’s Restaurant in Swanton for 35 years. John also worked at Fonda Container for 27 years. He loved the outdoors, especially fishing and biking. His favorite hobbies included woodworking, visiting and playing cards with relatives and friends and taking care of his home. John also cherished the time he spent with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Imelda “Millie” Tougas of Swanton; their children, Susan Tougas of Charlotte, NC, Donald Tougas and his wife Nanette of Colchester, Richard Tougas and his wife Sarah of Enosburg and David Tougas and his wife Lorelei of Swanton; grandchildren, Leah & Billy Poggi, Matthew & Amber Nietupski, Andrew Nietupski, Justin Tougas, Adam Tougas & Jordan Lareau and Nathan & Denise Tougas; 6 great grandchildren; his brother, Clement Tougas of St. John, Quebec; 2 brothers-in-law, Jean-Guy Rainville and his wife Fernande of Fairfax and Gilles Rainville and his wife Claudette of Georgia; 3 sisters-in-law, Therese Paquette of Jericho, Lillian Rainville of St. Albans and Fernande Tougas of Swanton and several nieces & nephews.

John’s family would like to thank Dr. Manchester, Dr. Fitzgerald and Susan Williams, RN from Franklin County Home Health for the great care they provided.

 Lucy B. Montague, 99, passed away at Copley Hospital, in Morrisville, Vermont on December 14, 2017. She was born July 23, 1918, in Plattsburgh, New York to Martin and Alice Bromley. She graduated from Plattsburgh High School and Plattsburgh Normal School. A teaching position brought her to Fairfax, Vermont, where, on a blind date, she met her future husband, George Montague. They were married on November 28, 1942, in Chazy, New York.  Upon their return to Fairfax, she taught school periodically in addition to raising four children. She taught 4-H, was a member of the Church Women’s Auxiliary, and a member of the Eastern Star. Lucy was an accomplished seamstress-creating entire wedding ensembles for friends and family. She had a passion for oil painting, knitting and crocheting afghans and intricate sweaters for family members. She created beautiful quilts, and each child, grandchild, and great-grandchild received one. Above all, she was a loving and caring mother.

She is survived by her brother, Calvin Bromley, of Plattsburgh, New York, her daughter, Diancy Boyden and husband Frederick, son Michael and wife, Kathy, daughter Melanie Ripley and husband, Bryan, and former daughter-in-law Diane Montague. Lucy is also survived by her grandchildren: Mark Boyden and wife Lauri, David Boyden and wife, Linda, Stephanie Campbell and husband Matteo, Jason Putnam, Travis Putnam and wife Hollie, Ryan Montague and wife Aubrey, Stacie Paratore and husband, Louis. Her great-grandchildren include: Emily, Lucy and Rachel Boyden, Laurence Couture and Juliette Boyden, Ila and Reuben Campbell, Juliette and Gabrielle Paratore, and Eleanor Putnam.

Lucy was predeceased by her husband, George, in November 2003, her son, Gary, in January 2017, and her sister, Doris Anderson.

The family would like to thank the staff at Copley Hospital for the compassion and care Lucy received while she was there.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017, from 3:00-6:00 p.m. at the A.W. Rich Funeral Home in Fairfax.  A graveside committal service will be held in the Spring at the convenience of the family. Milton, Deborah (Debbie) Wright Walford, 72, of Milton, VT Passed away peacefully at Green Mountain Nursing home on December 16,, 2017.

Debbie was born March 15, 1945 in Youngstown, Ohio to Ralph Hull Wright and Alice List Wright. She graduated from Edinboro University in 1966, where she met her future husband of 52 years - W. James Walford. Jim and Debbie moved to Vermont in 1968 where they put down roots and started their family. Debbie started her teaching career at St. Albans Middle School, and finished at B.F.A. Fairfax after 24 years as a celebrated art teacher. During her time teaching in Fairfax, Debbie lived life on her own terms, teaching while raising a family, and earning her Master’s Degree from Johnson State College. Debbie spent time on many extracurricular activities while volunteering in the close knit community of Fairfax. Her creative spirit continued while fostering both a full time kindergarten and art programs at BFA Fairfax. She retired in 2009.

Debbie lived a life combining her passion for art and the outdoors into photography, painting, and adventure.
Debbie is survived by her loving husband, Jim Walford of Milton, Sister Dr. Alice Wright and RJ Potter of Milton, Brother and Sister In-law Ralph and Josette Wright of Camp Hill, PA, Sons Dylan Walford of Milton, and Graeme Walford of Cambridge, VT, Daughters In-law Kathleen Walford Kelly, Milton, and Jennifer Caswell, Cambridge. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Elaina and Miles Walford of Milton.

Westford - Betty Lou (Wright) Allen, 91, passed away peacefully on Tuesday December 12, 2017 after a short stay at Franklin County Rehab in St. Albans, VT. She was born on October 26, 1926 at the family home in Underhill, VT, the daughter of the late Waldo and Maude (Carey) Wright. Betty grew up and attended school in Fairfax, VT where she enjoyed playing basketball. She graduated from BFA Fairfax in 1945 and went on to meet her husband of 60 years, Stearns B. Allen Sr., at a dance in Cambridge. They married June 8, 1947 and started their family. While Betty had many accomplishments during her life, what she was most proud of was her family. She cherished each one of them and the time she spent with them. Betty was a woman of great fortitude, resilience and hard work but at the same time a very kind, loyal and loving person who was in turn loved by many. Betty enjoyed being active in her community over the years and was involved with various organizations and support groups. Some of these include the Women's Society of Christian Service (WSCS) in Shelburne, the Western Covered Bridge Stompers, Alzheimer's Support Group, Binghamville United Methodist Church as a member and Trustee, Fletcher Cemetery Association, Fletcher Historical Society. She was a 10 year member of the Shelburne PTA and a long time volunteer with her late husband at the "Sugar Shack" at the Champlain Valley Fair and the Binghamville Church Suppers. She worked for many years in the cafeteria at the Fanny Allen Hospital where she made lots of great friends. Her family has fond memories of her love for playing and usually winning at cards; spending time at camp and fishing on Metcalf Pond; visiting with friends and family around the kitchen table; as well as her talent of making yummy maple baked beans.Betty is survived by her son Stearns Allen, Jr. and wife Cyndy of Cambridge, her daughter Patricia Garcia and husband José of Westford; two sisters-in-law, Beulah Blodgett Richardson and Laura Wright; five grandchildren, Cara and husband Dan St. Cyr, Kristen and husband Jason Smith, Paloma Lescieur, Shan Garcia, José Garcia and wife Jhaneth; nine great grandchildren, Shayne, Taylor, Jacob, Mason, Carlos, Ximena, Alanna, Annabelle, and Leandro. She also leaves several nieces, nephews and cousins including a devoted niece Linda and husband Fred Bruso; her neighbor and "adopted son" Don Dingman and wife Larissa; and her beloved feline companion Merlin.Betty was predeceased by her husband, Stearns Allen, Sr. on November 1, 2007; her son, Douglas Allen; her brothers, Harold Wright, Ronald Wright and Harley Wright; sisters, Beatrice Sheltra, Olive Gates, Waldona Wright and Kathleen Wright; granddaughter, Whitney Allen; grandson-in-law, Carlos Lescieur; and great grandchild, Maria Smith.The family wishes to thank Dr. Diane Rippa for her many years of above and beyond care and the staff at Franklin County Rehab for their caring and professionalism during Betty's times at their facility.Visiting hours will be held on Saturday December 16, 2017 from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. at A W Rich Funeral Home - Fairfax Chapel, 1176 Main Street, Fairfax, VT 05454. Fairfax - Tom (Tucker) Chicoine, 60, passed away in his sleep December 4, 2017 at his home in Fairfax, Vt. He was predeceased by his parents George and Theresa Chicoine of Winooski and a brother, Michael. Tom is survived by his only son, Jimmy Sweeney and his two grandchildren, four brothers: Steve, Jim, Peter, Philip, three sisters: Cynthia, Lydia, Mary, eleven nieces and nephews: Jay, Amy, Mike, Jake, Jessica, Leia, Michael, Luke, Max, Isabella, Nicholas. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

Fairfax – Jean Ann Lozell Martell a longtime Chittenden County resident passed away Friday, December 1st, 2017, at he McClure-Miller VNA Hospice House surrounded by her family.

Born in Burlington on July 4th, 1967, she was the daughter of Katherine “Kitty” (Sweeney) Richard and the late Ross Richard. Jean was 50 years old.

Jean was educated in Burlington and was a longtime waitress and bartender at Sh-Na-Na’s and served in the Vermont Army National Guard. She was a homebody who took care of her children and grandchildren.

Jean is survived by her husband, Dwayne A. Martell of Fairfax and their children, Ronald Lewis Smith of Fairfax, Gary Lee Billodeau of Swanton, Crystal Lee Charette and her husband, Adam, of Westford and Amber Marie Raymond of Winooski as well as here grandchildren, Hazell, Samuel, Nevaeh, Danasia, Avontae, Carma, Moriah, Nancy and Ariel.

Jean is also survived by her brothers and sisters, Ross Richard, Jr. and his wife, Barbara, Robin Fry and her husband, John, Star Trayah, Reed Richard and his wife, Heather, and her in-laws, Bernard Farnsworth and Donna Richard.

She was predeceased by her father, Ross Richard, her sister, Kathleen Farnsworth and brother, Kevin Richard.

A time for sharing memories will be held at 1154 Main St., Fairfax on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017 at 12 Noon. For more information please call Dwayne at 802-582-6329.

ALBURGH – Russell W. Goodsell Jr. age 83, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at his home in Alburgh surrounded by his loving family.

He was born August 14, 1934 in Rutland, VT to the late Russell Sr. & Catherine (Griffith) Goodsell.

Russell was an avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt, fish and work in his garden. He worked as a plumber for several years until he started the family business, Crossroads Mobil in Alburgh. Russell loved his role as Grampa and Great Grampa and he always looked forward to Alburgh’s July 4th parade, his home was the parade headquarters.

He is survived by his children, Paula Whitcomb and her husband Robert, Glen Goodsell and his wife Martha and Martha Goodsell and her husband Steve all of Alburgh; 13 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson; his long-time companion, Evelyn Dubuque of North Hero; sister, Betty King and her husband Fred of Colbrook, NH and many nieces, nephews & cousins. Besides his parents, Russell was predeceased by his wife, Sylvia (Hebert) Goodsell; their daughter, Andrea Balch and his sisters, Judy Clapper and her husband Arvin and Rita Lucas and her husband Fritz.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, December 11, 2017 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, VT. A funeral service will follow at 12:00 PM with Deacon Duane Langlois officiating. Interment will follow in St. Luke’s Cemetery in Fairfax.
