Without first hand knowledge of why they are digging and then backfilling it is hard to say they are doing nothing b/c you don't know why they are digging.  Could they be digging to do soil structure tests to make sure the areas around the footings are solid enough for a new bridge?  Most projects start with test pits in certain areas of a project to determine that everything will go smooth as the project was designed.  A test pit may look like a waste of time to the ordinary laymen, but is actually very essential for projects.  I'm not saying thats what they are doing, but just throwing it out there.

Oh and night work = Lots of money, and if that was to be the plan the engineer would have had to stipulate that during a pre-bid, so all the contractors could have bid it that way.  The $683k price tag would have been much higher.  Plus like Mike said night work in such a residential area would have been really tough!

The section of Lamoille river from the falls to the steeples bridge was stocked on april 20th.  I've heard of quite a few people having good luck already this year.

To replace a bridge now a days is crazy money!  Correct me if I'm wrong but a year or two ago when the bridge in Richmond was replaced I believed it cost in the neighborhood of 16million?  That bridge is comparable in size to the one in town by steeples.  Just to put a little comparison on it.

I have to imagine its going to be a temporary thing, getting everyone slowed down well before the hill on the corner where the detour will be onto Boissoneault Rd for the bridge replacement on main st.  But I do think its lovely that the sheriff took advantage of the new opportunity! *sarcasm sarcasm*

Usually Vtrans is very involved in jobs that are done on or around a state roadway.  They usually require a site visit to make sure the contractor, engineer, and state are all on the same page with such things as traffic control, pedestrian traffic, detours etc.  Usually these site visits are mandatory before work is suppose to begin so I'm sure alot of these questions have been addressed.

General Discussion / Re: Town Meeting Day Proposal
« on: April 16, 2010, 03:02:49 PM »
I was pretty young when town meeting day was on tuesday, but I was told that when it was, there were higher attendance then vs now with it on saturday.  So wouldn't it make sense to think that going back to tuesday would actually increase attendance?

When we poured the reservoir up in Irasburg we had a design strength of 5000# at 28 days, but with the mix that was used from carroll our 7 day break was almost at design strength therefore our 28day break ended up being up around 7000# I think.  Well to get to the point the structual engineer was really worried about this saying that with it getting to strength too quick it will actually start cracking, therefor sacrificing the durability and life of the reservoir.  Do you not have to worry about this with prestressed concrete?

April 15 is the date that VT AOT is allowing as the earliest "start date" for any serious construction projects within the state right of way.  I've got a decent project going on in another town in chittenden county right now that we got the ok to start early b/c of the nice weather, and we weren't working withing the actual roadway.  But we were told if the weather turns for the worst before the April 15th date we would have to shut down.  Just throwing out some general info if anyone was wondering where the April 15th date probably came from.

There's some articles out about this, and how it wasn't appropriate for a 5yo to do this speech b/c of some of the language, but I saw this live on tv and it was Great! haha

I'm sure Mike, and Henry can say for sure, but I think the old fire station was near or is the same spot as where the historical society building is now?  Is that correct?  I was pretty young when it happened but I think I remember correctly that something happened to the fire station, and they moved what is now the historical society building to that location, from a location closer to the top of the hill on main street?  Maybe from around the funeral home? I'm just guessing now.

I went to a store last night and was looking at an item that was quite a bit more then the $2000 limit but I was told by the head salesman that eventhough the dollar amount is over the $2000 tax free limit you can still get it tax free up to the $2k, but have to pay normal taxes on the remaining amount over it?  Does anyone know if this is correct?  I was under the impression that the whole item dollar amount has to be under $2000.  By the way this was a pretty reputable store, so we're not talking a walmart, or something like that.
