Apparently, it's a border-town thing with alternate addresses, as I have a friend who lives in Georgia with a Milton zip and he doesn't receive the Franklin County Edition either. My guess is that the Freep is so ego-centric to Chittenden County, they really don't care where the other borders are. So much for the big reach-out to Franklin County!!

Suzy Kneeland is that you popping up all over Henry's forum lately? I thought it might be when you made that reference to Mr. Codding concerning the correct spelling of lightning! Henry's retired, he doesn't care about grammar, he just writes what he wants when and if he wants!! I know because he told me! :-) If you're confused, I'll give you a hint...Drama (One-Acts: Great Deity...)

General Discussion / Re: DSL in Fairfax ??
« on: May 01, 2007, 04:24:27 AM »
I have DSL envy!! I live on Tabor Hill, that's not any farther than Sam Webb, and Henry lives past me on the Fletcher Road??? Dial -up just keeps getting slower, it's maddening. Especially when you have access to high speed during the day and come home to it.

As for H44...

I was very disappointed that this didn't pass the house. I understand how difficult it is and it makes me wonder if it is something that should be left for the voting public to decide since it is their lives in question? It would then take the decision out of the hands of the legislators. I don't understand the controversy because, no one says you have to do it. I guess its the stigma attached to the catch word suicide and the irrational fear that people have that doctors will suddenly go mad and start euthanizing anybody they deem unfit. The data from Oregon shows there hasn't been a run on people opting to kill themselves or doctors doing it for them. I am reminded of a situation a few years back when a person in town took their life,  I believe after a cancer diagnosis. I think if this law were in effect at the time and this person knew there would be another way to end things if it got too bad, then perhaps the misery suffered by friends and family as a result of the suicide would have been averted. the truth is that anyone who wants to stop living, is going to find a way to do it, regardless of the law. Sadly, people who are very sick and suffering don't want to carry on and are too weak to pick up a gun or some other means. I know opponents don't want to hear it, but it is the truth. I've seen people suffering, not wanting to live. I know I don't want to be that way and I don't want anyone I know to be that way. I didn't intend for this to become a rant when I began, but I have been receiving information on this bill for several years and have been listening and  researching it. As much as I understand how people feel,  I don't agree with the arguments, I think they are inflammatory.

You've certainly hit the nail on the head-the folks at J&L certainly have that small town special about them! They are always willing to go that extra mile-literally as you've pointed out. Perhaps it's the giving nature that seems to spring eternal from the Meuniers that rubs off on the people in their employ? I've lived here nearly twenty years and never can recall a time when the staff at J&L wasn't friendly and helpful. Thanks to you all for making Fairfax the wonderful place that it is!  lmb

Current News & Events / Coca-cola story

Henry could you please explain what you mean about this being an embellishment?  There are a number of reports of this person going to peoples homes....are you saying the original story as told isn't true, that this person is an employee of Coke and isn't a potential threat? lmb

Current News & Events / Single Family Homes , a thing of the past?
« on: June 04, 2005, 03:05:26 AM »
Whatever happened to the single family home? Why are the citizens of Fairfax allowing seemingly greedy developers come in and build nothing but unattractive "multiplexes"? Look at the  new neighborhoods going in all over town, every field it seems now has something being built in it....even far outside of the supposed "growth center". There isn't a tree nor a hedgerow among them! Even the developements that have really nice houses aren't all that appealing to look at. Forget the odd mixes of condos, houses, duplexes etc that comprise some of the areas "neighborhoods", they're even worse.
It's true that Fairfax is becoming a bedroom community for chittenden county but I think it's being perpetuated by the people who only want to scatter odd clusters of "units" around town (to make more $, of course) than to build actual homes that people want to live in, not just sleep in. For as long as I've been around this town (over 20 years) it has always been about community, family, knowing your neighbor...roots. The people who live here have an investment in the town and all that goes on here. I think we need to stand up to these developers and make them build responsibly.....not just dump 44 units on 18 acres because they can, but build affordable single family homes, with yards for kids to play in.
Unless the goal is to change Fairfax completely, I urge everyone who can attend the DRB meeting to go and express their concern on this issue.

Current News & Events / town clerk fiasco
« on: January 25, 2005, 10:29:27 AM »
I have read the unoffical minutes of the selectboard meetings for a long time and if I know one thing it is this: when some in this town gets a bee in their bonnet about someone else, that person has the cross hairs of a loaded rifle sighted right onto their back! I've seen it happen before and what is interesting is that alot of the same names keep reappearing!
I don't know how this mess got started, but I recall seeing something about the town clerk week after week in the minutes and after reading it saying "what?" None of it ever really made much sense. It really did come across as personal against the town clerk. What is most unfortunate is that it was aired out publicly in the newspapers for the state to see making Fairfax look ridiculous.
I agree that now "town business can go on", without this petty fight taking place, however, I don't think the ELECTED town clerk should have felt compelled to resign (unless she was pressured from the people who RE-ELECTED her, which wasn't the case)
So what will the next petty issue be?

Current News & Events / Police Coverage/World Disasters
« on: January 10, 2005, 09:34:41 AM »
Although comparing the amount of police protection in Fairfax to  world disasters is a little like comparing apples and oranges, I think I understand where the author is coming from....... As a whole the US is able to ALWAYS step in and provide relief from disasters to those in need around the world but, it's very difficult to solve a simple problem like police protection in a small american town! I am in complete agreement with that. As a large powerful nation we should be able to do both! (Please, no one take this to mean I don't think we should be helping the tsunami victims who've suffered tremendously, because I do).
This robbery stuff is pretty scary, the reality is, if someone wants to enter your home, they can & will. A locked door or window is not going to stop them. We were robbed about 15 years ago, not alot was taken of great value, other than some $ but the stuff that was taken meant something to us (it was OURS) and had to be replaced. The police at the time were pretty uncaring about it all I hate to say, actually telling us there really wasn't anything they could do. I suppose that was true but not what you want to hear after some stranger has been rummaging around , helping themselves to your personal property!
How do you protect your home when you're working? Or worse, what if these brazen criminals are thrill seakers and want to enter when you're home? We don't really know just how deranged they are, if they're armed, high on drugs or how far they might go to score what they need. The real world is creeping into Fairfax and it's a clear and present danger that we really need to wake up to. I think a neighbor hood watch is a good idea for those who have "neighborhoods". My neighbors have 10-60 acres of land and live behind the trees, most houses can't be seen from the road in the summer....I think even police protection in these areas is somewhat precarious. Hopefully we can find a solution to this problem and put an end to it.

Current News & Events / assistant town clerk
« on: December 15, 2004, 09:25:03 PM »
It seems as though the select board is unhappy with the fact that that the town clerk fired the previous assistant town clerk (who was indeed paid) and hired other help of her own choosing....something she is entitled to do! If there was $ budgeted for an assistant, which there was for Rita Magnan, where did it go? Is  it in a special account  " For Rita Only"?  This whole situation with the town clerk & select board seems to have become personal and everyone is begining to lose credibility.
