General Discussion / Re: own a bus or purchase a contract?
« on: October 17, 2013, 10:44:34 AM »
I totally agree with Karen.  I also am concerned that this becomes a 'slippery slope".  If we contract out the buses, what comes next?  We already have the food program contracted out.  Will the custodial staff be next? As we get away from having our own staff who care about the school they work for, as opposed to the company they work for, the sense of community and the pride for the school will downgrade.

Just because something might be a "cheaper" option doesn't make it the right option.  If we own our buses, we can try to control the expenditures for the fleet.  We will be completely at the mercy of the contracted company for all expenses.   My $0.02.

General Discussion / Re: New Scam Alert
« on: July 23, 2013, 07:25:48 PM »
This is the same one I mentioned on another thread.  When it starts, it does sound realistic, but I knew about if from getting the same calls at my office.  I've had the call here at least 7 or 8 times.  And Karen, when did you register your number on the DNC list?  It is only good for three years.  It is not a permanent list.

Henry, feel free to take any of the photos I posted of the parade on Facebook.  You can get them from there, right?  If not, let me know and I'll try to email you whatever ones you want.

I got the "This is John from the Shipping Department.  I'm calling to arrange delivery of your emergency system.  You know...one of those 'I've fallen and can't get up' systems."  Who the heck does this???  I listened through to the end and it makes you press 1 to arrange delivery or 5 to decline the free offer.  Please don't press anything!  Once you do, they know your number is active and it will put it into an active robo-system.

Be vigilant, friends.

I'm glad it was just an errant light switch.  :)

Chris, I was outside with Jose when those cars flew around the corner.  Thankfully no one was out walking...they took the corner doing at least 50.

Oh, my heart is heavy.  My love and condolences to the entire Ovit family.  But now Orman and Ivy are back together.  And I know the gardens will be so much more glorious with his attention.  RIP Orman...

Current News & Events / Re: Sad News About Dick Brown
« on: November 18, 2012, 10:11:09 PM »
Thank you, Suzy.  :-)  I think your comment about us being siblings is also so true.  The proof is the number of us who are "friends" on FB.  Coming from a small school with such a strong central figure, we all knew each and maintain contact...even more than 30 years later.  We are so privileged to have had that sort of experience growing up.

Mike and I were sharing stories tonight.  Ultimately, we said that even if Mr. Brown was hard on you, he did it because he believed in you and wanted you to succeed.  He never wanted to let you just "slide by".  He expected you to work hard and try.  As long as you did that, he made sure you knew you had succeeded.  I remember seeing him beaming at sporting events, concerts, and other school events.  He was always so proud of all his "kids".

Good-bye, Mr. Brown.  You will be sorely missed, but your spirit will live on in all of us.

Mr. Brown, my heart is saddened from reading your post.... I said to Mike back when you were in the hospital the last time there should be certain constants in life.  And for me, you are one of those things.

You played a very important part in my life as I grew up.  I've enjoyed having your support and encouragement since I was 9 years old.  I am a better person because of what you taught me and so many other young people in Fairfax and the surrounding communities.

Thank you for everything.  Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers....and sending lots of love your way.  And to the rest of the family.

YAY!!  I hope the owner will now make sure to keep the dog leasher or on a dog run when put outside.  How scary that she was on the interstate!

Awesome photos!  Looks like you had a great time!

I posted to Mary Kay on Facebook that we had a balloon land in our backyard a few years ago, but it was early in the morning.  In fact, I was still in bed!  Anyway - the chase van backed down the driveway and we all watched as the balloon was loaded and such.  They also had a lovely bottle of champagne that they shared with me.  The thing that I will always remember was one of the chase team had the plastic champagne glasses and he took the bottom off one of them and put it into the ground and poured water into the glass as I had my Rex with me.  They even included the dog!  I got the rest of the bottle after the toast was done.  I went inside and had mimosas for breakfast!!
