I believe MOST people go for the lowest price.  I don't have all the details, so I won't be quick to judge about the crane company/operater's qualifications/quality.  This could have just as easily been a matter of mechanical failure of the equipment.

My initial thought when reading the first post was  "I guess I was lucky (since I have picked a couple off trees/plants at our home)"  The allergy aspect makes more sense.

I think the fact that this has been "in the works" since 1993 says a LOT about the ability of businesses to grow/expand in VT and the ability of a VERY small group of individuals to use the environmental rules VT has available to prevent building most things.

I don't hold it against the local business individuals who put up the fight.  Most people who fear for their futures do whatever they believe is necessary to protect their way of life.

Personally, I don't care one way or the other if there is a Wal Mart in St. Albans.  I've always been able to find pretty much everything I need around the area without a trip south.

I AM concerned about our future here in VT.  In this case, the land developer has been persistent, but in the case of most other businesses, especially those businesses who actually manufacture items, they would just look to build elsewhere because a 15+ year fight to build in one specific area (or state)  is just not a good business plan.  I wonder how many jobs our area and state in general have lost in the name of "protecting our scenic views" or whatever other excuses are provided.

I was thinking the same thing as Mike.  IF this incident had been a commercial dump truck full of sludge from a sewer treatment plant, or a tractor trailer full of methyl-ethyl- bad stuff, would you be calling for MORE REGULATIONS on All commercial trucks?

We have ENOUGH (too many) regulations.  Lets just use what we have instead of creating more.

we have many boxes of books in our attic collecting dust.  They are a mix of paperback and hard cover spanning a wide range of topics. Would the library be interested in accepting these?

My thought seeing the photo was C-130.  It is the same basic model as the "Fat Albert" the Navy Blue Angels fly for air shows.  The take off / landing distances needed are impressively short considering the size of the plan and their cargo load capacity.

Gov't run health care system won't need "death panels".

They'll kill people with beaurocracy.

I find it interesting reviewing the postings.  It seems like at one time in our society, things were "handled between two people", which sometimes involved fighting.  While the occassional fighting was necessarily accepted, it wasn't made as big a deal as we do now.

Now, some people are happy fighting is HIGHLY discouraged and the police are getting involved, as well as lawyers and judges determining everything. But at the same time, people seem frustrated that "kids" (and an increasing number of adults) these days act entitled and have less personal responsibility.

If you build a society where the wants of individuals are catered to, and someone else resolves differences between individuals (they don't resolve them personally), then judges and lawyers really will (already do) run everything, and nobody has to have personal responsibility because if you have the better lawyer, you can push the blame to someone else.

Welcome to the "Nanny State" in which we live.  This condition has been built over the last 40 years or so  by parents who spent a lot of time "protecting" their kids (from everything), and making sure they didn't go without (anything).

I guess the question now is, can we change the direction of our society to push responsibility back onto ALL parties involved in an issue?

Are there enough people who have a problem with the general lack of personal responsibility to make a change?

"And don't forget, the kid might just be returning a borrowed I-Pod, or something else.
Innocent until..............."

I just described what I observed without stating my assumption about what "MIGHT" have been happening.  (I'm pretty sure one person returning an iPod would have just pulled up next to the friends car.)

I'm interested in how people (especially law enforcement experienced people) think the following situation would best be handled?

I stopped to a  store (here in Fairfax) last night about 9:30.  When I came out, there was a car parked between me and the south end of the store with 2 individuals inside. A third, maybe in his early 20's, had just gotten out and was walking toward the entrance.  He walked past the entrance around the north end of the store.  As my brother-in-law and I were slowly (very slowly) driving north in the parking lot, we observed the "passenger" approach a two door red car (with at least a driver and 1 passenger), stand there for about 5 seconds and then turned and walked away.

I considered pulling up behind the car, record a plate # and then drive off, but gave consideration to the near fatal (potentially drug related) beating in fairfax last year, and decided I was better off just going home.

Should I have stopped in the parking lot and immediately called 911?  Would it have made a difference?

I plan to visit the store owner tonight to inform him of what I saw and recommend he might want to install some extra lighting  and maybe camera's in his parking lot.

Just wondering what other people think should have / could have been done?
