Current News & Events / Re: Will a bond proposal ever be accepted by all?
« on: October 09, 2017, 04:24:08 PM »
"Kicking the vote down the road" may raise the cost of the ENTIRE proposal. However, as others have pointed out, it gives us a chance to consider a much less expensive project of making only urgent repairs and more reasonable, limited upgrades. I think what many object to is the implication that we have only one all-or-nothing chance at this. Saying that the only way get the leaky roof fixed and the walls painted is by also building a spa, a swimming pool, and a 4-car garage is indeed not a responsible way to spend taxpayers' money.

Current News & Events / Re: BFA Renovation Estimate Breakout
« on: September 29, 2017, 06:18:28 AM »
Scott, it would be quite helpful if you could summarize this long wandering list of line items into two categories that will be more meaningful and easier to digest to the people whose support your seeking: 1. Total cost to repair and maintain and modestly expand the EXISTING structure(s); and 2. Total cost to ADD NEW or MAJORLY EXPAND facilities. As someone here has said, NEEDS vs. NICE-TO-HAVES. As it stands there are just too many seemingly unrelated items in the list to be of any real value.

Thank you,

Dave Vallett

We fully agree with every sentiment expressed in the Leech's excellent and articulate letter. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to pay attention and vote their conscience accordingly, especially those without children in the school who are directly affected but likely out of the loop.

I tried to send these to the email shown on the web site but it bounced back twice. Maybe a school board member can answer them here.

* Regarding future school growth ... is there data showing Elementary population growth is expected to continue? What about numbers supporting the "continued school growth in the next 25 years" claim?

* Besides targeting potential growth is this renovation also an attempt to 'compete' for tuition-paying HS students?

* What school programs have been impacted by the lack of an auditorium and what was the impact?

* As for more space for community use, what is the present and future community demand for meeting or performance space that is not already met by current school/library/town hall/Fire Hall/Baptist Bldg. facilities?

* Are additional costs for upkeep, maintenance. energy, etc. due to the added space factored into the estimate?

Thanks,

Dave Vallett

Political Issues/Comments / Barbara Murphy
« on: October 21, 2016, 01:53:46 PM »
I wish to add my thoughts to the many others expressing support for Barbara Murphy for Representative. As our two major political parties move further apart our society is becoming more polarized. How very fortunate we are to have a truly independent candidate, especially one who has served her community for so long and in so many ways. Barbara knows, and is known by, many of her constituents. She is passionate about remaining unattached, indeed refusing support from both parties - and the benefits that go along with that - to maintain her status as an Independent. I have known her well for many years and can attest to her thoughtful, experienced, and pragmatic consideration of issues affecting our community and our state. She prepares well, studies hard, and acts to serve her community ... not a party agenda and not even her own political future. As an Independent she is beholden to neither party and is free to vote her conscience in support of Fairfax. Thank you for your past efforts Barbara, and everyone please vote!

Chris - good idea, though BFA was doing it 15 yrs ago and I believe other schools in VT still do. As for consolidating school districts ... now THERE'S a game changer that needs to be moved on quickly!

While we certainly need alternatives to the antiquated and ridiculously lopsided property tax, we also need to hear the candidates' views on reducing the ABSURDLY STRATOSPHERIC HIGHEST-IN-THE-NATION cost of education.

Talking about school funding sources without discussing cost reduction is like trying to lose weight by buying your food from a different store ... while still packing in the calories.

As a hunter, owner of many firearms, and one who has known Barbara very well for many years, I can attest to her respect for gun owners, hunters, and their rights. I have no doubt whatsoever that she would do exactly as she says and approach any legislative issues regarding our 2nd amendment rights responsibly, with reason, and with respect for the rights of all our community members.

Well said Gary. I think your statement "Barbara, as did John, sees her candidacy as a public service and not the start of a political career with aspirations beyond the local level." says it all.

General Discussion / Re: Which Bills Team will Show up?
« on: October 13, 2014, 03:39:37 PM »
As a lifelong Bills fan, I couldn't help but add this bit of unfortunate but true wisdom to the discussion:

A new family owns the Buffalo Bills: the Pegulas.

The same team owns the Buffalo Bills: the Patriots.
