They won't reestablish the group, The fireworks committee was a group of people trying to do what you are doing now. Trust me you can not do this alone. If you want to head up a group ask for volunteers and reestablish a committee that is the best way to get started. I don't think you can get approval for a budget line item without knowing how much you will be looking for.

The other thing you will need to have is a dollar amount you want to get from the town to put on a show. If you are hiring a company such as Northstar Fireworks it will cost you allot more than $5000. to put on a show. You also need a place to shoot the Fireworks that the Select Board will feel is safe and accessible to the Fire Dept. and Ambulance crew in case of an emergency. My suggestion would be to reestablish the Fairfax Firework Committee and plan ahead for next year before you put anything on a ballot.

I shot Fireworks for fairfax for seven years with the help of the fire Dept. and a group of a small hand full of hard working volunteers. In the beginning we raised all our own funds from Calcutta's to donations. It's very difficult to raise $5000. with a small group. We have shot shows for as little as $3000. Having the town pay for the show with taxes seemed like the only fair way to do it and because it's a town show you are covered threw the towns Insurance, We have all our own equipment and thats why the show was so good for little money. I think it averaged out to about $3.00 a house hold. We are going to get rid of all our equipment due to a lack of interest and the economy, I'm glad to hear were missed.

OK, I hear the names Amanda, Jessica, and Debbie Flemming. Does anyone know who the new owners are?

Current News & Events / Re: More On The Voting For Fireworks
« on: July 08, 2008, 01:27:40 PM »
I agree with you Henry that everyone should have a say on how there money is spent. The last time we checked a $5000. cost to tax payers is about $2.00 per 100,000. property value. So were talking about $5.00 per house hold if my numbers are correct. The problem with fund raising is no one wants to do it and all the businesses in town get hit hard with no return for there troubles. Even counter space cost local businesses money. If there is a group willing to try and raise money thats always the better option but it has been my experience that it's a lot of work. Just ask the FBPA how much time they spent raising $2500. Keep in mind the fireworks were intended to be enjoyed by all and get the town folks together for a fun night not divide the town in hard feelings and worries of how to pay for them.

I understand what you are saying. What I am trying to say is as a trained pyrotechnic myself we all do this on a part time basis. The Fairfax Fire Dept. in conjunction with Northstar Fireworks held an educational seminar for my entire shooting crew and certified us. I am not questioning the professionalism of your group. I just stated it would be more cost effective to keep the crew we have already developed.
As far as Insurance I received a copy of the towns Insurance policy and it clearly states we were covered. This was also confirmed by the select board in place at the time. I would not shoot a show unless my crew was covered. If this has recently changed than I was not notified.
I agree with you completely that the show should be voted on and funded by the town for the town.

The reason the show was so good for you is because it was in your back yard. For the rest of the town it was a little hard to see. The Town already has Insurance that covers all town events including Fireworks. It has to be a town event paid for by the town and shot by a town employee. There is no additional charge for this Insurance. This is the case for the past seven years. I think the group you had shoot the show did all they could with the resources they had. The permits have always been pulled and the show has always been professional.

As a member and the Treasurer for the Fire Department I have worked with Shelly on the Art in Bloom Festival. Shelly works countless hours on this all year long and keeps detailed records of all expenses and money brought in from the festival. Shelly does a wonderful job with this Festival and the Fire Dept. is lucky to have her in there corner. Thanks Again Shelly.

It’s unfortunate that the fireworks were voted down this year. I have been shooting the Fireworks off for the town for the past seven years. With the large group of volunteers and the help of the Fire Dept. we have put on a good show for the cost of the Fireworks only. This year the FBPA decided to try and fund raise and hire a company to do the show. We have tried this in the past and found it just doesn’t work. If the town pays for the event the impact on your taxes is minimal and if the town doesn’t want it they will vote accordingly. If you hire an out side company to shoot the fireworks as they did this year you have to pay for liability Insurance and that’s not cheap. So when you raise $2500. you may get a $2000. show. That’s if the company is not making a dime. Class C or consumer Fireworks are not meant for a Town Show. I would say that the FBPA did there best to keep the show alive and hopefully next year the town will vote to have the old shooting crew back.
