I don't think you're missing anything. I am certainly not trying to preach that pellet stoves are the best solution out there. It was just the best solution for us because of the convenience. As you point out it is a little cleaner. The stove is stopped and started at the touch of a button and temperature is also controlled at the touch of a button (advantage over a wood stove). The startup cost is high for a pellet stove or a wood stove, but the pellet stove can be direct vented, which can make installation a lot cheaper. Wood is definitely more economical if you are harvesting and splitting your own wood. Wood stoves don't require electricty to run, etc...
As far as owning your own propane tank versus the company owning it, I can't really comment as we have never owned our tank. Corse's owns our tank (and I'm not really even sure of the terms to be honest). There was no up front cost to us with them taking ownership of the tank over from Liberty Propane. I would think understanding their terms would be the key to making this decision.

Mummy,
We switched to Corse's from Liberty three summers ago and have been really happy with their service. We have a 500 gallon underground tank that was owned by Liberty (installed by the previous owners of our house). The deal the previous owners made was to keep Liberty for seven years and then they would remove their tank at no cost to me anytime after that. Prior to that, they would have dug up the tank at my cost.
When we eventually decided to switch from Liberty because we were tired of haggling over price every year (I'm not sure why they couldn't just give us their best price right off the bat), Corse's was able to buy or trade a tank with Liberty and we kept our existing tank in the ground. Ever since then we have been happy with our service from Corse. Unfortunately for them we have only been getting filled up once a year now that we have a pellet stove.

We installed a pellet stove 3 summers ago and we saw our propane usage decrease by about 75%. The up front costs are high (just under $3K), but we have been saving over $1500 a year (more now that fuel is so expensive) and the house has been a lot warmer.
We have been burning a little more than 6 tons of pellets for our 2100 sq ft home the past couple of winters. Pellets are currently running between $215 and $225 a ton at Vermont Pellet Stoves in Colchester. They have the cheapest pellets around as far as I can tell.
I know two families that have purchased new pellet stoves this summer, but I've also heard that stoves are getting really hard to find because so many people are trying to minimize oil and propane usage.

Henry -
It looks like Larry Ward has been more than fair with you and has done an excellent job assisting you with this site.
Even though your family is willing to support the hosting fee for the website through gifts to you, I wonder if there are other ways you could fund the site.
1. Even though this site reaches more than just residents of Fairfax (I am a resident of Fletcher), maybe the town would be willing to foot the $100 a year to host the site. Clearly the town and its residents benefit from all the information you post.
2. Maybe there is grant money from the state that could be obtained to fund the hosting of this valuable site?
3. Have you considered placing ads in the forum? I believe companies like Google would be very happy to place text ads on the site for which you would be paid a fee. Many of the forums I visit have ads that do not detract from the site.

I just find it hard to believe that Hilary could win a national election. She couldn't even win her party's nomination.
I think people either love Hilary or hate her (I happen to be a hater) and I think there are enough of each to make it a wash and to give McCain the win.
Just my 2¢.

Good Riddence! It was about time she got out of the race.
As long as she's not on the ticket in the fall, Obama probably has my vote.

I was worried that it might be closed last night on the way home from work, but all the signs in Stowe said it was open. I even checked the VT AOT website before I left and that said the road was open too. It was not until I got up past the new Stowe Mountain Lodge Hotel that they had a sign saying Road Closed 1000 Feet Ahead. Sure enough the Road Closed Barricade was up. The truck in front of me turned around, but decided to go through the Notch anyway.
There was snow on the mountain and along the sides of the road, but the road itself was clear. I took it easy, but it did not appear slippery at all.
I did have to stop for a moose near the Three Mountain Lodge. It has been a while since I have seen one.
The road was open when I went through at about 8:30 this morning. No interesting wild life to speak of on the way into work.
Thanks,
Todd

That sounds like a pretty good deal. That might make me switch from shopping at Hannafords to Price Chopper.
Now I am trying to think where there is a Sunoco in St Albans, so I could fill up my truck after grocery shopping ever week.

Finally! I have been checking out the Agency of Transportation web site several times a day for the last couple weeks. As a daily commuter from Fletcher to Stowe, I look forward to the Notch being open at the first sign of spring. http://www.511vt.com/index.asp

If you pop one into the microwave for 5-10 seconds, they taste about as good as a fresh one from the store.
