The Fairfax Republican Party will hold its Justice of the Peace Selection Caucus on Wednesday, August 8, 2018, 7 pm at Peter Fitzgerald's home at 139 Brick Church Rd. in Fairfax. Anyone interested in being on the November ballot can contact me at petefitz_05454@yahoo.com, or 802-355-6719 to put their name in the running for selection at the caucus if unable to attend.

Reminder - BIKE & SEWING MACHINE COLLECTION – This weekend
Just a reminder about the Knights of Columbus bike and sewing machine collection to benefit “Pedals for Progress” this weekend. Used and unwanted bikes in reasonable condition and sewing machines in working condition will be shipped to poor and needy people in third world countries. We ask for a $10 donation with each bike/sewing machine to help defray the cost of shipping. No bike? Monetary donations are always welcome. All donations are tax deductible. You can drop off bikes/sewing machines at our collection on Saturday, September 9th from 9 AM to 1 PM at “Paul’s Car Wash” on Main Street, Fairfax or at Ascension Church in Georgia. If you cannot make the collection or if you have no way to transport bikes, give us a call and we will arrange for a pickup. Any questions, call Bob Thompson at (802)881-6629. The Fairfax Republican Committee is seeking candidates for the Republican nomination for the Vermont House. The following article outlines the reasons we'd like to see more Republicans in Montpelier. Although it was written for Washington County, it applies to all of Vermont. If you are interested in helping to bring affordable, common sense government to Montpelier, please contact me. The Franklin County Republican party provides ongoing support to candidates, and weekly candidate meetings are held to help your campaign. It's a lot of work, as outlined in the article, but will be very rewarding to provide an alternative for change in Vermont.
State House Candidates Wanted
The following editorial was written by John Fitzhugh, Washington County Republican Committee chairman, a past counsel to governors and former president of Union Mutual Fire Insurance Co.
This is a call for help.
Gov. Shumlin and the Democrats’ super majority in the Legislature are bankrupting our state, making it unaffordable for young and old, and driving many to leave the state.
This simply must change. There is an urgent need to bring financial sense back to the State House. Over the past five years, the state has increased spending twice as fast as our citizens’ incomes have risen. There are plans to spend over a billion dollars on information systems over the next decade.
And, but for the federal government sending our taxes into a financial black hole known as Vermont Health Connect, the state would be bankrupt from this ill-conceived effort.
Without more forward-thinking legislators, Vermont will continue down its current path of using taxes as a means of social engineering and of creating more and more bureaucracy. Now is the time for a few good men and women to step forward and be part of a force for change.
The Washington County Republican Committee is looking to recruit state Senate and House candidates for election this November. Candidates must file petitions and the necessary paperwork by May 26.
Of the 18 legislators currently serving in Washington County, five are Republicans, 11 are Democrats and two are Independents. All five of the Republican legislators — Sen. Bill Doyle, Barre Town Reps. Francis “Topper” McFaun and Robert LaClair, and Berlin/Northfield Reps. Patti Lewis and Anne Donahue — are running for re-election.
Let’s be clear: Becoming a legislator, or even running for election, is a lot of work. Although legislators receive about $12,000 a year and expense reimbursement, the work is pretty much full time from January through mid-May, and probably a day a week for the rest of the year responding to constituent questions and attending district functions.
The best candidates have a love of public service, the flexibility in their lives to accept the schedule a legislative position requires and a strong desire to improve the lives of their fellow Vermonters. Previous public service on a school or select board is certainly helpful, but legislators come from a great variety of backgrounds.
What does it mean to be a Republican? There is no litmus test, but here are some fundamental concepts which have served the Republican Party well since its founding in 1854:
— The power of government should be limited in order to maximize to every citizen the opportunity for “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” as Thomas Jefferson so eloquently wrote in the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
— Individuals and their families, not government at any level, are the building blocks of our society.
— To the extent possible, initiative for change and improvement in our lives should come from the private not the public sector, because competition leads to better results, greater efficiency and more participation and ownership by people in their own future.
— Taxes are necessary for the raising of revenue for essential government services, but since they are essentially the taking of another’s property, they should be imposed fairly and with great reluctance.
— Government has a responsibility to spend tax dollars wisely and carefully. If it cannot assure that it will, the money should be returned to the citizens.

The Republican Party has a glorious history. Some of our greatest presidents, starting with Abraham Lincoln, were members of the Grand Old Party (a nickname sometimes shortened to GOP). Vermont governors Deane Davis, Dick Snelling and, most recently, Jim Douglas were Republicans.

Hi all,
This is the official notice of the Fairfax Republican Caucus to nominate delegates to the state convention. It will be held on Thursday, April 21 at 7 pm at my home at 139 Brick Church Rd. Brick Church Rd. is in North Fairfax, and we are the 5th house on the right - an old farmhouse with a red barn.
All delegates will need to be members of the town committee. If you are not already a member you can join the committee at the Caucus. The state convention will be held at the Sheraton in South Burlington on Saturday, May 21. Fairfax can elect 7 delegates and alternates.
As usual, we will have pies for the caucus. If you'd like to bring a pie, let me know what kind so Karen doesn't make one too!

If you can't make the caucus but are interested in participating in the convention let me know, it's an all day event starting at 10 am and going until 6:30 pm.

The next organizational caucus for Fairfax Republicans will be held at my home (139 Brick Church Rd.) on Thursday, September 17th at 7 pm. We will be electing town officers, including a chair, vice chair, secretary, and treasurer. If I am re-elected chair, I hope that someone will step forward to be vice chair who could succeed to the chair in 2017, as this will be my last term as your chair. Or if someone would like to take over now, I'm open to that too!
As usual, I will ask Karen to make pies. My goal is to have attendance exceed the number of pies she bakes!

I've checked the weather and it looks like Saturday will be a beautiful day, so the bonfire is on! We are on 139 Brick Church Rd (entrance to Windtop), go past Windtop, we are the 5th house on the right. Sometimes GPS will bring you to the 3rd house, just look for the farm equipment and big pile of brush on the right a little farther down!
The ground is a little soggy, so bring some dry footwear, and your favorite chair! See you then. Starts at 8:30 pm.

The Knights of Columbus free throw challenge will be held on Saturday January 10 in the BFA elementary gym. It is open to boys and girls ages 9-14. Registration is from 1:00 to 1:30 pm. All are welcome to participate. Come on down and show us your best shots!

BFA Nordic Ski team's annual citrus sale is on! Profits support the purchase of equipment and offsets the cost of the team trip to Mt. St. Anne in Quebec City in early December. Citrus is picked and shipped the same day. The fruit will arrive in the first two weeks of December.
The team is selling navel oranges and grapefruit from Florida Indian River Groves (FloridaIndianRiverGroves.com). You can order navels, grapefruit or mixed boxes in 10, 20, and 40 lb. sizes. Prices are $25, $32, and $44 respectively for individual or mixed.
Orders must be prepaid by Tuesday November 11. No extra fruit will be ordered for later sale so put your order in now!

As called for by state law in the event of a tie vote in the primary, the Fairfax Republican Committee met this evening and selected Chris Santee as the Republican candidate for House in the fall.
The Committee thanks Barbara Murphy for coming to introduce herself. We had a very informative discussion with Barbara about the issues affecting our Town and State.
In the end, the Committee felt that the final say should go to the people of the town, and now there are three able candidates in the running for the office. We look forward to a strong debate on these issues in the fall campaign.

Tomorrow after the 4:00 Mass, our Knights of Columbus Council will be participating with Knights from around Vermont in a Day of Prayer for Priests. Knights in Vermont will be praying from 8 AM to 8 PM for our current priests in the Diocese of Burlington and for more vocations to the priesthood and religious life. All are welcome to join us from 5:00 to 6:00 at St. Luke's Church.

Knights of Columbus is collecting bikes and sewing machines for “Pedals for Progress” (P4P). P4P is a non-profit organization and since 1991 has shipped over 130,000 bikes to third world countries around the world. We also ask for a donation of $10 per bike to help defray the cost of shipping. As you can imagine, a bike collecting dust in a garage somewhere can be a vital source of transportation for a person in a third world country. A sewing machine collecting dust in a closet somewhere can be a vital source of income for someone in a third world country. Please consider making a tax deductible donation.
