Political Issues/Comments / Re: New tax???
« on: April 11, 2015, 08:24:49 PM »
The CO2 factors that I found for gasoline is 113 gallons and the CO2 factor of fuel oil is 96.6 gallons.  Using the .001 factor on each of these numbers results in a tax of 11.3 cents per gallon of gasoline and 9.6 cents per gallon of fuel oil.  Quite different from the $1.02 and $1.07 figures mentioned earlier.

I understand that this will get charged to distributors and passed along to consumers but the only numbers listed in the bill were what the distributors will be charged.  Can someone please tell me how the numbers of "$1.02 to each gallon of heating oil, $0.57 to each gallon of propane, and gasoline and diesel would each increase $1.07 a gallon" were arrived at?  Thanks!

Terrible idea.  Like Thor said the money will not go where it's supposed to and be allocated to some other area where there is a shortfall.  Legislators need to find a way to cut spending.

A nice welcome by two of the friendliest posters on this site.  Good job Thor and kpplus2.  Did either of you even bother to go to the link and read what Newt's group is trying to do?  As usual any view that is not aligned with yours must be blasted down.

I would have no issue if BFA wanted to show Canadian Bacon.  John Candy was great in that movie!  Harvey Weinstein's list of movies is too exhaustive to go through (almost 300 producer credits alone, thanks IMDb!) and I would have to say there are some on his list that I would object to being shown at BFA (for example Piranha 3D - why would this be shown in school?).  I would not call this movie a "history lesson" since D'Souza is not a historian.  A better description for the movie is political documentary, just as Moore's films are political documentaries.

I'm glad to see that you keep your children well rounded.  Hopefully they will be able to continue to keep an open mind as they get older.  I strive to do the same with my kids.

This movie should only be seen by those with a good understanding of American history.  D'Souza presents the information in a basic wrong/right indictment of a number of actions in the founding and history of America, for example Native American genocide, slavery, the annexing of the southwest from Mexico, wealth through conquest vs entrepreneurship.  These are complex issues that this movie does not have time to cover in depth.  I certainly hope that this is NOT shown in BFA Fairfax unless it is in a senior year AP course.

FYI - Senators McAllister and Collins both voted in favor of this bill.

Just out of curiosity does anyone know what would happen if there had been a tie (if one more person had voted and it was in favor of the budget)?

The report seems to focus only on student-teacher ratio and how it has affected spending.  I found it interesting that the report stated that "teacher salaries do not contribute to Vermontís
high spending level. Rather, if Vermontís teacher salaries were at national levels, our total spending and per pupil spending would be even higher than they actually are."  It then states later "the student-teacher ratio in Vermont, which is the lowest in the country and is ultimately the cause of Vermontís high education spending."  My take from that would be to leave salaries alone and cut positions.  I wish the report would have included more information on other areas of school budgets.  It seems that the scope of this report was very narrow.

Here is a link to the school budget - http://budget.fwsu.schoolfusion.us/modules/locker/files/group_files.phtml?parent=20055849&gid=2213581&sessionid=c5522fdc7584a988634c99d85f331503.  I'd love to see what you pick out as not being real world stuff.  As a parent I'd be curious to see what you would have me pay for.

Josh - They came today around 4:30 and didn't go past the end of my driveway.  I'm guessing it was because they didn't want to have to come back up the hill with the road being icy.  Probably the same issue but worse yesterday since the plow didn't come down the road at all until 3:15 (that's a whole other complaint).  While it's not an excuse for not picking up the garbage it's the only reason I could see for them not getting our entire street.  And I hope it wasn't my dog in your trash.

rogers9993 - I would love to know the name of the second Selectboard member so that I don't vote for that person again.

Only a short section of the southbound lane was unpaved as of last night.
