Hey Everybody!

Join us at the Fairfax Community Center on Saturday, December 10th as we welcome the holiday season.  This is our 10th annual Tree Lighting event, and we are more excited than ever!

As always, this event is 100% free thanks to the help and generosity of a few local businesses.  Dusty Trail Realty, Rainville's Collision & Repair, and Northern Mountain Associates provide more than just financial support for this event every year, and it wouldn't be possible without them.  The next time you see Ann, Mark, or Nate, make sure you thank them!

Activities Include:
-FFW Band Holiday Concert
-Photo with Santa
-Holiday craft for all ages
-Winter Hay Rides
-Free cookies & Hot Cocoa
-S.D. Ireland Decorated Mixer

And something new this year...
-Send a holiday message to recently deployed VTANG members

The event starts at 4pm, but we won't turn the tree on until just after 5pm.

Current News & Events / My take on the upcoming Senate race
« on: November 07, 2016, 12:14:12 PM »
Hey everybody, I want to be clear that I'm not attempting to ruffle any feathers with this, but I did want to share it with you all.  This is simply my perspective as a younger member of our community.  Your opinions may be different than mine, and that's cool too.  Anyway, here it is!

Why I support Dustin Degree

Growing up in Fairfax I met Dustin at various events around the county, but it wasn’t until my time as a legislative aide in the State House that I’d learn who he was as a public servant.  As an aide to one of Dustin’s fellow senators, most of my responsibilities depended on establishing a working relationship with various elected officials.  Dustin immediately went to bat for me, and helped me to foster those connections early on.  Whether he was providing introductions, or convincing his colleagues to attend VSCSA (Vermont State College Student Association) press conferences in the Cedar Creek room, Dustin has continually acknowledged the importance of addressing Vermont’s ailing post-secondary education system and the affect it has on our economy.

Being a young Vermonter, many issues that influence my life are often resolved without consideration of a perspective like mine.  The average age of a law maker in Vermont is old enough to retire, and while the wisdom that comes with that remains invaluable, it offers little insight into the experience of a recent college grad struggling to make a life in their home state.  Affordability remains my number one issue in this election, and I know that Dustin will work for a more affordable Vermont for all of us.

Since finishing college, I have returned to my hometown of Fairfax, and I am currently employed in a position where I get to serve my community.  I work for the municipality as the Director of the Parks & Recreation Department, and my life can become chaotic between various community events.  One aspect that is certain however, is knowing that I have a reliable volunteer in Dustin.  As a young professional, Dustin serves as more than just a role model to me.  He remains willing to act as a resource for the members of our county, even when it presents no immediate benefit for himself.  He is truly a selfless public servant.

Dustin is my voice in Montpelier, and I am proud to offer my support to his re-election efforts.

I'd like to thank everybody involved in this process! You are all great people who put our community first, and for that, I thank you.  Below is the official Press Release from the Parks & Rec. Department.

Town of Fairfax receives donation of ‘Baptist Building’ to act as future Community Center

On Monday, January 4th the Trustees of the First Baptist Church (part of the United Church of Fairfax) signed the deed completing the donation of the property at 1210 Main Street to the Town of Fairfax.  The building, known as the Baptist Building, was donated on the condition that it is to become a multi-use community center, acting as a resource to all of the residents of Fairfax.

The Fairfax Parks & Recreation Department (PRD) will work in collaboration with other community groups like the Citizens for Fairfax Community (CFC) to upgrade the building from its current condition to a condition more appropriate for daily use as a community center.  While the building needs significant upgrades before it can be fully utilized, the project has been outlined in multiple phases to better allow for the usage of the building to increase gradually until the renovations are 100% complete.

The funding for Capital Improvement will not be generated through new tax revenue collected from the citizens of Fairfax.  Various grant funding will be used to complete each phase of the project, starting with things as simple as adding internally light signage above exits, before eventually moving to things as complicated as rewiring the building’s entire electrical system.  Local contractors and builders will be used as often as possible, as the mission of this project is to enhance the quality of life for those in our community by creating opportunities of all kinds.

The building will be operated through the Fairfax PRD and made available as a space for community members to use for various events.  While the PRD will continue to use the building for events such as the Haunted House and Tree Lighting Celebration, both new programming and events will be offered that couldn’t have been offered in our community before due to lack of an adequate space.  This project creates new opportunities for organizations and individuals alike, as private parties are highly encouraged to utilize the available space for their functions.

The Fairfax Parks & Recreation Department would like to thank all of the individuals and organizations that have worked (over the approximate period of six years) to make this donation possible, specifically; former PRD Director Katrina Antonovich, Susannah Chamberlain, Mark Hunziker, Mary Taylor, Barb Duval, Rev. Elizabeth Griffin, Sally Sweet, Peg Gilbert and all others who were dedicated to making this dream become a reality.

Both the United Church of Fairfax and the PRD hopes that community members will donate what they can to help us preserve an important historic landmark in town while simultaneously supporting the future of our community through the development of our new community center.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact PRD Director Colin Santee via phone at (802) 849-6111 ext. 20 or by email at: recreation@fairfax-vt.gov

Current News & Events / 4th Annual Haunted House

Who: Fairfax Parks & Rec. Department
What: 4th Annual Haunted House
When: 5:30pm-8:00pm (Friday, Oct 30th & Saturday, Oct 31st)
Where: 1210 Main Street, Fairfax (Baptist Building)
How Much: $5 per person/$15 per family of four +

It's that time of year when the streets of Fairfax will soon be crawling with kiddos dressed up as their favorite superheroes, cowboys, princesses, and zombies.  For the Fourth year, the Parks & Recreation Department will be hosting a Haunted House at the Baptist Building (the future Fairfax Community Center!) for two nights from 5:30pm through 8:00pm.  Come on down either Friday, the 30th or take a quick break from trick-or-treating on Saturday the 31st.  Cost is $5 per individual, or families of four or more at $15 (all proceeds will help to offset the associated expenses of transforming the Baptist Building into our new Community Center).

Be warned! This event may be too spooky for the whole family, however if you are unsure that your little one can handle it we will let you do a walk through so you can make a the final call.  The Rescue Squad will be hosting a smaller event on Saturday, the 31st that is more appropriate for the younger members of our community.

Current News & Events / Fairfax is getting a Community Center
« on: October 06, 2015, 12:16:27 PM »
Fairfax Select Board approves donation of Baptist building for use as Community Center

On Monday, October 5th the Fairfax Select Board approved the donation of the Baptist Building (1210 Main St. Fairfax, VT 05454) on the condition that it becomes a multi-use community facility.  This is great news for the Parks & Recreation department, as we will finally have a space of our own to grow the recreational opportunities that we provide for the community.

The Baptist building has long been identified as a possible Community Center, and now that the building is owned by the Town the necessary improvements to preserve this historic building can finally begin to take place.  The Parks & Recreation Department has developed a multi-phased plan that outlines the necessary updates to the building for it to become a year round Community Center.

The funding for this project will come from various sources, however none will be generated through new tax revenue.  The Citizens for Fairfax Community (CFC) is a local 501(c)3 organization that will work in collaboration with the town to secure grant funding for this project.  The new facility allows for the Parks & Recreation department to increase the programming offered to the community, in turn generating more revenue for the project.  A capital campaign is currently being developed in order to further support this project.

We at the Parks & Recreation department would like to thank all who have worked to make our decade long dream become a reality.  The future of recreation is bright in Fairfax thanks to you!

More information will be made available here on our website shortly.

If you have any questions, please call Parks & Recreation department Director, Colin Santee at (802) 849-6111 ext. 20

Looking forward to the fun events this week!

Current News & Events / Re: Resturant
« on: July 01, 2014, 10:58:35 AM »
I believe that this failure was inevitable, high rent or not.  Having worked in the food service industry I always pride myself on being the perfect customer, but I just couldn't believe the service there.  I'm not sure if it was only my experience, but I was continually disappointed with the lack of attentiveness towards the few customers there each time I went. Don't get me wrong, the people were VERY friendly and I wish them the best, but it seemed as if they weren't there to "work."

The real question, what happens next?  Should the space continue to be a restaurant, or should it see some new life?

(Fairfax has four pizza places and no public gym or studio center, just saying...)
