Current News & Events / Gingue's open house
« on: August 25, 2014, 01:04:49 PM »
Yesterday the Gingue's hosted an open house event on their farm with tours and a corn roast.  What a really nice event for the community to enjoy and what great hosts they are.  Thank you for a great event and informative tours that serve to bring our farming community together.  John Mitchell

General Discussion / Re: Crosswalk near traffic signal?
« on: July 11, 2014, 04:09:38 PM »
Several times I have requested that the district highway engineer put in a crosswalk in the same area you refer to.  His comment had always been there is not enough sight distance.  Perhaps now with the Food Venture building removed it would be more viable.  I will contact him again to see if it can be done. Thanks for reminding me.  John Mitchell

I do like liver with onions/bacon as well but only have it now once or twice a year.  My favorite liver is lamb.  Most folks have not had it but I will tell you it is the most tender, tasty of all the livers.  Last fall on the day of "processing" our lambs, Sue and I were treated to "raw" lambs liver.  Gabe Handy is of Lebonese decent and a real delicacy in the Lebanon area is very cold, fresh, raw lambs' liver.  Gabe had approached me last fall about the possibility of trying liver this way and he prepared it for us at our home.  It was delicious!.

I think the confusion lies in the fact that Sen. McAllister had voted earlier in favor of an amendment that would have changed the bill.  However, he was never in favor of unionization in this arena and voted NO on the bill.  If you are confused at all just give him a call.  he is very accessible and represents many of us well.  John Mitchell

In reading your posts I fully agree with most.  As the State Representative of Fairfax I voted against this issue several times.  In my opinion there is a use and place for unions in our society but NOT in the arena of small business, which is what most child care facilities are.  Emerson Lynn had a good editorial in Tuesday's Messenger relating directly to this.  The only way change can be made is to vote and talk with your friends in other towns that have representation that supports this type of legislation.  Obviously those of us who are moderate and in my opinion, logical  are very much in the minority in Montpelier.  By the way I will not be seeking another term.  Thanks for your support.  John Mitchell

Peter King is an excellent candidate for Select Board and I will support him in the next election.  He has every quality that is needed to help Fairfax and I commend him for running.  Please turn out to vote.  John Mitchell

Congratulations Art.  Having been a member of the Masons since 1976 I feel like a kid in comparison to your 70 years.  I believe Art will be 94 next month and throughout his many years has been a real pillar of this community.  A true, real life role model.  Thank you Art and congrats.   John Mitchell

Current News & Events / Great homecoming Day
« on: October 13, 2013, 04:11:40 PM »
What a great day for Homecoming yesterday!!  Many games and most victorious I think. Probably a bit too warm for soccer and football players, but great for the fans.   Many thanks to Karen McNall who organized the dedication of the flag pole for Doug Stewart.  That girl is every where doing every thing related to football.  I do not think the program would be what it is without her ambition to make it work.

Political Issues/Comments / Re: Mitchell Reports from Montpelier

Very definitely our school budget effects what we pay in property taxes.  There seems to be a great disconnect with act 60 in that folks think what they pass as a school budget will be paid for by someone else. That is not the case.  Granted so called "gold towns" may pay more but believe me our taxes are reflective of our budget.  This is one reason our method of funding education is broken and needs to be fixed.

I am on the House Health Care Committee, Tom and we did take several days of testimony concerning Lyme Disease and all the consequences thereof.  It is important for folks to be aware of the cause, prevention and treatments for Lyme.  Indeed there is much controversy in the medical community as to diagnosis, testing and treatment, but one thing is sure and that is those whoa re affected by it need our help and support.  I hope the letter from our committee has influence and moves things in the right direction.  We will most certainly be revisiting this topic next session.  In the meantime check yourselves and children for ticks!

My reason for a no vote on H.112, GMO labeling is that the AG and others have indicated this legislation will most certainly bring litigation.  The cost of which will be in the range of $6 million to $10 million.  Vermonters can ill afford another law suit of this magnitude.  There are 20 other states considering similar legislation and I thought it prudent to let another take the lead for a change and Vermont could follow after the litigation has cleared.  I am very much in favor of the premise of H..112, just not willing to spend our tax dollars to defend at this time.  This bill will go to the Senate for action next year.  Hope this clarifies my position.
On another note we are in session Monday and should finish Tuesday.  It is a little crazy there this time of year.    John Mitchell
