A new program starts today that should help Vermonters save money and the environment at the same time. Efficiency Vermont's refrigerator and freezer recycling program will pick up old energy-wasting appliances for free, then recycle 95 percent of the material.

Vermont electric utility customers in select areas can participate. They'll receive a $30 rebate and can, in some cases, reduce energy bills by $150 a year. Customers can call 1-877-545-4113 or go online (www.efficiencyvermont.com) to schedule a pickup.

I just want to once more testify to the value of your website to our community.  I have a freezer that has been sitting in my basement for 6 years unplugged.  This program you have identified for us is going to send a couple of people to collect it from my home (from the basement no less), take it away to responsibly dispose of it and then send me $30.  A win win here!

Well, I have an old 21 cubic freezer down cellar that we bought in the 1960s.  It stopped working and I was going to get rid of it.  I decided it was a great place to keep some of my old genealogy records, so hopefully when I am dead and gone, somebody opens it up before they send it off to the recyclers.
