Current News & Events / Re: Looking For The Old McMasters Place
« on: June 07, 2007, 12:10:16 PM »
Henry,
It reall hard to tell from some of these.  But, I am thinking that this could be what is/was the Nichols farm at the very end (St. Albans side) of Nichols Rd.  Not sure how long it has been the Nichols Farm....I maybe wrong due to it is called the Nichols Rd......
I do know at the dead end part (Seymour Rd., Nichols Rd. Extension, etc...) there are numerous homesteads, cellar holes.  And there area some apple trees.  (This is where I grew up, so I know all the woods in that area very well.) But, the terrian does not look the same.  Although there are a few spots that look similar.  The Fairfax side of Nichols Rd., does not have the 'flatness" that these pictures are showing.  (Due to I think Beaver Meadow Brook that fllows through the area just past the Stockwells.)
It could also possibly be the home where the Legault/Ladue Family lived, about 1/2 way between the two entrances.  The pics, don't show the huge tree that would be in the front yard.....

Can you get a copy of the map???

I also recall hearing that at one point the Nichols Rd., was the only route from Georgia to St. Albans, you can follow it all the way to the interstate.  Its a trail now, but still easy to see.  And from the Oakland Station Rd., you can see it leading through the fields ad back towards Fairfax..

I used to coach Steve in little league when he was 6 or 7 years old.  Nice to see him do things some only dream about.

Amazing how hearing a road name and people found deceased makes your mind race!! I just spoke to my mother she is okay and she had no idea of this happening.  Unsure at this time if it was anyone my family knew.

General Discussion / Re: How I spent my weekend....
« on: May 02, 2007, 11:57:46 AM »
The homeowner actually just had renovated.  A building inspector came to give it a occupancy permit.  Discovered that the electrical was not up to code.  So rather than redo the electrical, the decided to tear down and try again.
It would also help to know that the owner is the wife of the FE Hart fence company founder...

General Discussion / How I spent my weekend....

That's me on the left, after a few entries inside the building.  Here, we are keeping an eye on a tree the homeowner wanted to keep.  Both of our helmets used to be as yellow as others in later pics..

I was in that doorway earlier on in the morning...

These are some of my former cadet firefighters (12-15), that are now Jr. firefighters (16-18).  Some I will have in Vermont Fire Academy level 1 course (which I just became a nationally certified instructor in) in the fall.

This guy is a retired Washington DC deputy chief.  He joined us last year.  Still can't get over how much training we do and how dedicated we are for a volunteer (actually paid call) fire department.

I believe this is me....fire is around the corner to the right in a small room....this was the first practice burn of the day.

No postings of any importance on the fire server.  But, I do know the building as I owned a business in it for about 7 years approx. 10 years ago. (And spent 7+ years with Essex Jct. Fire Dept.)  There are currently (or were) two businesses.  A consignment shop and barber.  And if memory serves me correctly 4 apartments on the second floor, one in the back on the ground floor and one in the basement.  The building was very old and needed some work.  I am surprised it lasted this long.
You are correct Henry, it is across the alley way from where Tip Top News was.

WOW!! Just around the corner from my parents house.  I used to do haying for (I believe) it was Harolds nephew Mike Hanson.

But, here is the alert I got on it.

At approx. 11:50, Fairfax Fire toned for a confirmed barn fire on Rt.
104 near the St. Albans Town line. St. Albans Town, St. Albans City,
Georgia, called for mutual aid. Swanton called to cover St. Albans
City with 1 engine, and Cambridge called to cover Fairfax station with
1 engine and 1 tanker. AmCare also responded to assist Fairfax Rescue
on another call and fire scene coverage.

I used to have the same problem.  I finally cancelled completely and now walk to the local store and get it.

At about 11:30 the Winooski here in Warterbury broke up and started flowing.  I stepped out and walked over just to see what the river was looking like.  I got there just minutes before it broke up.  A sheet of ice the width of the river. (Maybe 50 yards) by about 250 yards long!! Started to break up and split and began flowing.  I watched for about 10 minutes and it was simply amazing!! Mother Nature at her best!
I met a person that was taking photos, as soon as I can I'll try and get some pictures posted.
