Political Issues/Comments / Supervisory Union
« on: December 11, 2014, 10:27:30 PM »
Anyone know what it takes to replace the leadership at the supervisory union? It seems more and more that they represent their own interests and not that of the community. The comments I've heard out of the superintendent are just amazingly uninformed busing and contracts. The more the state moves to supervisory unions, the more power he gets in a position where soon he won't have to even entertain our community positions.

It's odd that this was never an issue before though. Hopefully all new trucks will come with that paint from the factory.

Thanks for pulling that. It's an interesting list. I hope there are answers to how we met each of those goals. The Hour of Code program looks promising. I've done that a few years at home. At least the concepts are there. I hope we're learning some keyboarding skills too since those go a long way to coding.

This could be the most asinine solution to a simple problem. If direct heat is the problem, put up shade shacks. $3,900 in paint or shacks you can drive under that get you entirely out of direct heat. Seems to work pretty well anywhere in the world where people live in houses and seek shade from heat. Why was this never an issue until we got pretty new toys? Are we buying these planes with the same type of paint too?

System - Synology DS214+ - $295
Hard Drives - Western Digital 4Tb Purple Drive (x2) - $328
Camera License - Synology 4 License Camera Pack - $295
POE Switch - Cisco SF300-24FP - $302
Camera - AXIS P3384-V (x2) - $1,444
Camera - AXIS M3005 (x2) - $750
Wiring - CAT6 Plenum Rated Cabling - $300 (the price is for 1,000 ft but you can use the rest later)
Viewing Station - Synology VS240HD - $500

Estimate - $4,214

Additional Cameras - $52 per for the license and then the cost of the camera. This system supports up to 16 cameras and the switch can power up to 24 devices at a total of 180 watts. You'll want to leave some overhead there though.

What are the criteria and what did we do to meet the stated criteria?

Are there proven outcomes that tie to the iPads? ie Faster typing skills, faster reading rates, better comprehension vs traditional means? What oversite is there that these aren't being used to access Facebook and social networks all day?

I'm all for technology that has proven goals and process but I still haven't heard anything beyond "we need to do this so kids have access to technology". Are the students being taught about the technology in the iPads and how skills transfer to other technology?

Reviews / Security Cameras
« on: December 05, 2014, 07:10:59 PM »
Just finished installing AXIS security cameras at work on a Synology Network-Attached-Storage (NAS) system. This was a great experience. The overall cost was reasonable to setup using IP cameras. The smaller install was:

4 AXIS IP cameras
1 Synology NAS
1 POE switch
CAT6 wiring

There is no electrical wiring because the switch provides all the power for the camera as well as the networking. This is a major benefit over all the entry level systems that require power at each camera. Running CAT6 is much cheaper and easier that having to get outlets where you want the camera.

You can use the Synology NAS as network storage as well as a security system. Each camera has a web portal to view and setup the camera and the Synology software pulls all the feeds together. If you have a Windows domain at your office, you can use that to authorize users access to the NAS.

With a little extra work, the cameras are available remotely on a computer or phone.

Much of this sounds like what you can get at Costco for a few hundred dollars but overall the quality and customization is far greater. Don't underestimate the savings associated with removing direct power connections. You can add IP cameras anyway you like as long as they are connected. If you network has more than one subnet (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1) you can easily keep the cameras in those subnets and have access to all the cameras at one site.

That's some great mileage. Did you ever have to change out a battery?

I'm glad this system is so redundant. This isn't some website that can go down. People don't have phone books or time to look up the local numbers. We're all told to call 911. They need to get their act together and this should be a huge legislative issue. Time to put those local numbers back on refrigerators I guess.

Congrats. Very close race.

Again, Vermont doesn't scale. You need more non sick people to offset the costs of the sick in a pool. The pool is not large enough, so unless something changes and benefits are changed somehow, the costs are likely to increase. You can't afford to flat rate just to look good to voters. If there is an increase plan for it or start cutting.

I like that this doesn't take into account the amount of time a kid might have to send on a bus. Who is the survivors union resonsie to now for roving that what they are doing is more efficient. Do I have to look at everyone budget and somehow lug it together to figure that out. I think they should have to show a consolidated budget and the amount of each line going to each district. This isn't New York with a school every few blocks. The legislature has shown many times tha not everything saves on our scale. Look at the cost to develop a website for under a million people. If you want scale, remove all districts and make a state union. Otherwise, let towns consolidate when they want and stop pushing through small pieces to reach the same end.

Pot isn't a distraction. It's a viable option for increased revenue. The problem is federal law. There's no reason not to legalize it, tax it and use it as a alternative school funding stream like gambling revenue.

I'd like to see more on what alternatives we have to fund schools. This state is so small that property and income tax seem like the only models. Is there something else you'd propose?

Current News & Events / Re: Burglaries in the Area
« on: October 06, 2014, 05:39:03 PM »
When my house was broken into, he was kind enough to take prints. He was honest and let me know the chances I'd ever see my old Xbox again were pretty much nil. Everything takes precedence over burglary so that's how the cookie crumbled.

Comparing everything to CSI is not unreasonable. A print can be imaged, points of reference noted and compared quickly to a database. I not sure why that seems so out there. You can quickly scan a QR code and see the details it hides, finger prints just needs to be scanned and converted. I'm pretty sure if they can drive at a reasonable speed and read dirty license plates, they can put a few more dollars into this.

AH Trevor, you stole it. Maybe the district will take up the drivers at the end.
