BRENDA LEE BARKYOUMB
February 27, 1959 - January 31, 2022

Fairfax, VT--Brenda Lee Barkyoumb, 62, passed away at her home surrounded by her loving family on January 31, 2022, after a courageous 3.5-year battle with cancer. Brenda was born on February 27, 1959 in Burlington, VT, the Daughter of Kenneth Barkyoumb and Jean (Brodeur). She grew up in Westford and graduated from Essex High School class of 1977. She met her life-long partner Ike Irish and together with their kids, they spent the rest of their days together gardening; playing with their beloved dogs; hosting target shoots and 4th of July parties to raise funds for the local fire department; family gatherings at the "lean-to" camping lot and cooking large meals for the many that stopped by their home. Every year Brenda would cook a Thanksgiving meal and invite their friends that no longer had family to be with. One thing is for certain, you never went hungry if you stopped by for a visit!

Brenda was a kind, gentle soul that generously gave to others and was extremely hard working. She had a beautiful sparkle in her eyes and a warmth in her smile. Brenda was well known for her incredible ability to love and care for animals, especially dogs. She was an amazing cook! Her loved ones always looked forward to her annual fall treats of popcorn balls and rice crispy treats; and she was the family cake maker for all celebrations. A caretaker by nature, she cared for all that needed her and never asked for a thing in return. She was so generous, loving and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Her siblings were her very best friends and shared a special place in her heart. She enjoyed her days with them playing games, telling stories, and sharing a giggle.

Brenda held several jobs over the years including a job she loved at the Milton Bradley plant in Fairfax, and most recently being the proud owner of Happy Tails Inn and Spa, a kennel, dog grooming and doggy daycare business she ran from her home. She worked tirelessly through her illness and was so saddened to have to close shop when she became too ill. Her clients still rave about the care she provided, some finding it difficult to find a replacement that even came close to what they had with Brenda.

Brenda is survived by her children, Austin Irish, of Jeffersonville, Lorraine Titus of Milton, Howard and wife Kristine Irish of Fairfax, Dorene and husband Bob Whitley, of North Bend, WA; her grandchildren, Kelsie Corbeil (Irish), Connor, Madison and Alison Irish, Ryan Titus, Jasmine and Emma Whitley; her great-grandchildren, Kason and Kenna Corbeil; her Siblings, Janet and husband Roger Yandow, of Essex, Betty Severance, of Sheldon, Linda and husband Richard Mathieu, of Westford, Ken Barkyoumb JR., of Bolton, Debra and husband Mark Irish or Fairfax, Susan and husband Doug Corse, of Fairfax; Ike's siblings, Betsy Berardinelli, Marge and husband George Jagodzinski, Christine Williams, Ron and wife Barbara Irish Sr., Linda and husband Bob Turner, Sheila and husband Bret Reece, Mark and wife Debra Irish; A special Aunt and Uncle Buzz & Alice Collins. many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and beloved companions (her babies) dogs Harley and Garth.

She is predeceased by her life partner Ike (Larry) Irish; son-in-law Jeffrey Titus; father, Kenneth Barkyoumb; mother, Jean Barkyoumb; brother, Frank Barkyoumb; sister, Sandra Cutting; sister Gloria Ledoux; brother-in-law Ron Cutting; brother-in-law Al Ledoux and brother-in-law, John Severance; sister-in-law Carol Barkyoumb; nephew, Jim Cutting; nephew Brian Barkyoumb.

The family wishes to thank Bayada Hospice of Colchester, VT for their outstanding care and support of Brenda for the last 3 months.

Fairfax - Lee Douglas Minor, 86, passed away on December 28, 2021 at Green Mountain Nursing Home in Colchester.

Lee was born in Fairfax, VT on November 27th 1935, to Arthur and Evon (Hoben) Minor. He graduated from BFA Fairfax in 1954. In 1956 he married Louise S. Potvin and they were married for 65 years. They had 4 children, Alan, Jeffrey, Diane and Glenn. In 1957 he turned in his farm boots for wingtips to be one of the first groups hired at the IBM Essex plant. The IBM carpool days provided many colorful stories over the years. While starting at ground level at IBM, he worked his way up through the ranks to become Executive Site Manager, a position he was very honored to hold. In 1987 he was fortunate to take the first buyout and Lee retiree from IBM after 30 years of service. Retirement led to Lee becoming an entrepreneur as he embarked on many business opportunities both big and small. His work passion became Minor’s Country Store, property development, cord wood and used appliance sales. Each endeavor further solidified his nickname, Mr. Haney.

He believed strongly in civic duty. For many he served his community as a BFA Fairfax school board director, Justice of the Peace, Board of Civil Authority member, BFA Trustee and was instrumental in the development of The Fairfax Business Association.

Lee also believed in community involvement. He was the founder of the first Fairfax 4th of July parade in 1976 and ran booths at the community fair. Kids loved to go to his booth because he made it fun and everyone was a WINNER! In the early years he was a volunteer fireman and when the sirens went off in the middle of town, off he went.

Lee Believed in his children and in 1977 he and Louise went into a business venture with Jeff and purchased Minor’s Country Store. This became a huge community draw and Lee was always there taking the time to talk to everyone. Other than family this would be the accomplishment he was most proud of. He taught all of his sales knowledge to his kids and even passed it onto his grandchildren. All of the above, earned him the honorary title, “THE MAYOR OF FAIRFAX”.

Family was the most important thing in Lee’s life. For his children, he didn’t not miss a game, concert or event. Often, leaving work to watch the game and then return. He continued that trend by attending the many events of his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Growing up, the Minor home served as a hub for many friends and relatives. Lee believed in bringing friends and family together around the table often. He was the ultimate host and always ensured that everyone was invited and welcomed in his home. Lee and Lou loved to play cards, and they hosted many Friday night card parties where the table was always full. Lee was a jokester, often giving funny prank gifts at Christmas that required gloves and a mask only to name a few. Minor family reunions were always fun with DJ Dr. Fox, games and plenty of food. Ultimately, Lee loved having family dinners and spending time with friends. Quality time with those he loved was truly all that he wanted.

Many people came into Lee’s life and became an instant family member. You did not have to have Minor blood to be considered part of the family. His second daughter Kim and extra son Jason, his niece Susan (Drinkwine) Goulette and Mr. Marty Minor just to name a few. The compassion they showed Lee was remarkable even though he could be demanding. Many others came to spend time with him sitting on the front lawn in chairs discussing the worlds business. He cherished these moments.

Lee is survived by his wife of 65 years Louise Minor of Fairfax; his daughter Diane Bacon of Colchester; son Glenn Minor and wife Amy of Westford, Greg Tefft and husband Ed; six grandchildren Aaron Minor and wife Lisa; Kellie Minor and fiancé Charles Rowse; Nicholas Bacon and Kristiana Boucher; Addison and Anna Minor, Kris Irwin and wife Xem; six great grandchildren Avery and Nolan Minor; Kira and Kora Irwin; Noah and Skylar Rowse, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Lee was the last living descendent of the Arthur and Evon (Hoben) Minor family and was also predeceased by his children Alan Minor and daughter-in-law Annette Minor Tefft; son Jeffrey Minor and son-in-law R Michael Bacon.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday January 7, 2022 from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. with wake service prayers offered by Reverend John G. Feltz at 7:00 p.m. at A W Rich Funeral Home – Fairfax Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 8, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke Church, Fairfax with concelebrants by Reverend Karl Hahr and Reverend John G. Feltz. Burial will follow in the family lot in St. Luke Cemetery. Masks are required. Memorial contributions in Lee’s memory may be made to Fairfax Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 228, Fairfax, VT 05454. Janet Lois Stewart Geer

Date of Death: December 5, 2021

Date of Birth: October 17, 1931

Biography:
Brunswick, ME

Janet Stewart Geer, 90, passed away peacefully at Gosnell House Hospice in Scarborough, Maine on Sunday, December 5, 2021.

Janet was born in Fairfax, Vermont, on October 17, 1931 to the late Frank Clifford and Rena (Stebbins) Stewart.  Her early education was at Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax where she loved to go to dances, played the clarinet and basketball and was class valedictorian.  Janet earned her Bachelor’s degree from The University of Vermont, studying history and political science followed by a year’s study at Katherine Gibbs School in Boston.  Upon graduation, she began working at Lake Champlain Transportation Company in Burlington, Vermont, where she met David Wyman Geer, Sr.  He would become her husband of more than 50 years.

Janet soon found her true calling, teaching.  She often said that teaching was the best time of her life.  She taught in the business education department at South Burlington High School for over 25 years, earning her Master’s degree while teaching full time.  Former students often stopped her on the street to tell her how much they appreciated her lessons.

After her retirement, Janet kept busy sewing, quilting, knitting, reading, baking and taking her daily walk.  She was active in the Church, attending both the Congregational Church in South Hero, Vermont and the United Church in Fairfax, Vermont.  She loved to sing in the choir and was known for the goodies she baked for the Fall Church Bazaar.

Janet was fiercely independent throughout her life and preferred staying in motion to sitting still. One of her passions was summering at her beloved family cottage on Birch Island, Maine.  She started each day with an ocean swim, “the colder, the better!” and her daily walk.  While there she also enjoyed many friends and pursued her hobbies, including production of her famous molasses cookies which she lovingly shared with other island families.  Her island time reinvigorated her each year and created an abundance of memories for her family, her grandchildren in particular.

Janet’s devotion to her family was unwavering.  She showed her love in so many ways - cooking favorite meals, sewing clothes and knitting our favorite wool socks, caring for her grandchildren when they were small and offering help when needed to name a few.  In the last few years, Janet lived with her daughter in Brunswick, Maine.  She remained active by accompanying Judy on daily excursions and longer trips to explore more of the state.  If ice cream were involved, all the better.

Janet is survived by her son David Geer, Jr. and his wife Lisa (Phillips) of Moultonborough, New Hampshire; her daughter Judith Geer of Brunswick, Maine; two grandchildren, Emily Geer and her boyfriend Lucas Hanson of Portland, Maine, and Connor Geer of Carrboro, North Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.  Janet was predeceased by her husband David Geer, Sr., and her sister Beverly Taylor.

An informal reception will be held in the spring in Fairfax, Vermont, on a date to be determined.  An additional celebration of life will be held on Birch Island next summer.  In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made either to the United Church of Fairfax, PO Box 204, Fairfax, VT 05454; or to the Gosnell House Hospice, 11 Hunnewell Road, Scarborough, ME 04074. Condolences may be shared at www.funeralalternatives.net

Robert E. Sweet, age 71 of Fletcher, VT, passed away unexpectedly on November 26, 2021, at NMC in St. Albans, VT, due to fluid around his heart. His loving wife Linda was at his side.

Bob was born in Cambridge, VT, on May 19, 1950, to the late Ernest and Catherine (Rock) Sweet. He is survived by his wife Linda of 52 years; son Kelly and wife Joan, grandchildren Brittany and fiance Jesse, Danielle and fiance Tim, Jacob and Jarrett; daughter Karrie Ann and husband Bill, granddaughters Delaney and Malayna; sister Elaine; brother Corrie and wife Lisa; in-laws Reg and Norma Cherrier; Uncle David and Auntie Barbara Mayotte; Brother-in-law Edmund and wife Diane Cherrier; sister-in-law Judy and husband Allan Salter; sister-in-law Lorraine and husband Brian King; brother-in-law Gary and wife Angel Cherrier; many nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many lifelong friends.

Bob spent most of his days on Sweet Haven Family Dairy Farm. The family farm started over 100 years ago in Fletcher, VT. It has been worked with pride from one generation to the next. The relationships between the generations established strong working partnerships on the dairy farm that shall continue with Linda, Kelly, Joan and Jacob. Bob and his father, Ernest, had a love for big machines and ran an excavating business in addition to farming and maple sugaring. Bob loved working by his father’s side with the bulldozer and excavator. Many hands helped make all these businesses thrive. Bob also spent countless hours mowing lawns and plowing driveways for the family.
Bob took many cross-country trips with Peanut (Linda) in his beloved 1969 Camaro; they both enjoyed these trips where they saw our beautiful country. Many destinations included Alaska, Montana, and National Parks along the way to visit their daughter Karrie Ann and her family. Bob and Linda loved visiting the family camp in Canada. They spent time on the lake in summer, and went four-wheeling for miles a day. He would return there in the winter to go snowmobiling. Bob loved everything about nature; collecting rocks, seeing wildlife, or finding a waterfall made him happy. He loved giving his cats treats or just having them curl up on his lap. No matter the season, Bob enjoyed sitting on the deck swing with Peanut, looking out over Halfmoon pond, listening to the geese, and watching the songbirds at the feeders. He enjoyed going to antique auctions with Linda to see what treasures they could find. Bob and Linda enjoyed Sunday drives around Vermont, stopping for maple creemees along the way.

Bob always started the day with his 5:30 a.m. phone calls to his special friends (you know who you each are) after that he would make his rounds, his first stop was the barn to say “ How's it going today Mrs. Sweet” referring to Peanut.

We have lost an original. The “unofficial Mayor of Fletcher” as some would say, he leaves a void for family, friends, and the Town of Fletcher. He was a fill-in dad for so many, always lending a hand or sharing a good story. We will miss his infectious laughter, joking around, and seeing him driving around town. Bob would always have a smile and wave for everyone he met. In the Sweet family way, he was a hard worker. Bob did his thing, did it well, and with no regrets. He was hard-headed at times, but he got the job done at the end of the day.

A Celebration of Life will be held on January 16th, 2022, Masks are required from 1-3 p.m. At the Fletcher Elementary School, Fletcher, VT. Donations in Bob’s name can be made to MIB Agents, PO Box 858 Barnard, VT. 05031, in honor of his granddaughter, to help find a cure for Osteosarcoma. Please visit awrfh.com to share your memories and condolences.

Current News & Events / Bert Broe Class of 1972 dies Nov 30, 2021 age 67
« on: December 06, 2021, 06:17:26 PM »
Bert Francis Broe, age 67, passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at his home in Jeffersonville. He was born on May 11, 1954 in Colchester, the son of Reginald, Sr and Nellie (Rich) Broe. His early years were filled with the love of a large family and many neighbors. Everyone on Main St, Fairfax was considered family. Bert was eleven years old when he worked the summer at the McNall farm. He attended school at BFA Fairfax. He loved sports and especially excelled in soccer, playing on the All State soccer team. He cherished the home town gang and loved to tell stories of life on the Blake farm.

Upon graduation from high school Bert worked at Toof farm. He went on to learn the art of meat cutting from cousin Cole Ward at Joe’s Country Store. Store owner Peter Perley became a lifelong friend. Later he worked at ICV Construction for his father in law. In the early 80s he began a thirty year career at IBM. Bert then worked at Green Top Market as store manager. He ended his dedicated career at Green Mountain Coffee Roasters. He made countless friends over the years.

Bert met his future bride, Laurie Gillespie in 1974 and they married in 1975. Their brief courtship was filled with a love that lasted a life time. Together they raised two sons, Ben and Tyler, who were simply the most important humans in his life. They shared the love of sports, spent summers in the pool with the boys’ friends, enjoyed summer vacations in Maine and also spent many days on the golf course. Bert and Laurie welcomed their daughters in law, Amber and Brandi, to the family. They were “daughters”. Life was complete when he became a grandfather to Jake, Saige and Marshall. He treasured every moment, supporting them in every highlight of their young lives.

Bert had many interests. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a devoted coach of his sons’ grade and middle school basketball teams, ran the Cambridge basketball program for many years. He longed for the next great fishing trip to Gloucester with dear friends. Bert was an avid golfer and thoroughly enjoyed the last few years playing the senior men’s league at Enosburg Falls Country Club. He also treasured his poker club formed years ago with a group of IBM buddies, brothers for life.

Together Bert and Laurie enjoyed a simple life together, taking a ride in their old red convertible, cooking together, spending time with their kids, visiting the Marsh’s summer camp, boating with the Cotes, driving the back roads in his truck and traveling to their next adventure. Their trip of a lifetime was an anniversary vacation to Hawaii. “To have him forever would not have been long enough”. Bert and Laurie had a close circle of friends that were like family. One friend’s happiness and sorrows were the whole group’s happiness and sorrows. Some enjoyed summer trips to Hampton Beach and Maine and winter vacations to a warm island. Bert was bestowed with more birthday celebrations than any person deserved, and he was surprised every single time (private joke).

His family was his life. He was caretaker and protector of his large family. They did Broe camping trips filled with good food, endless stories, hikes, campfires and pranks. He was planning for the upcoming Broe Christmas party and volunteered the turkey and ham. He was always ready for his mother in law’s famous Christmas sing along. And, maple sugaring season was a chance to enjoy the outdoors, sugarhouse and his Gillespie family.
Bert’s favorite time of year was hunting season. He looked forward to it all year. He savored time spent in the woods with his boys and the camaraderie at the family deer camp. He was beyond proud of his buck of a lifetime that he bagged in Ontario and the day he shot a doe and a buck during muzzle loading. He said it was “the best day of his life”. In later years he was excited to share his knowledge and spend time with his grandkids in the woods and at deer camp, eager to mark their height on the door way. Bert loved taking a ride in his truck on the back roads with his faithful companion Ruby to look for deer. Bert’s cherished those who stopped in to spend time in his garage, admiring the antlers on the walls over an LTD and ginger. He loved Williamson Rd and his cream of the crop neighbors.

Bert leaves his beloved wife, Laurie (Gillespie) Broe, his loving sons and their families- Ben, Amber & Jake; Tyler, Brandi, Saige & Marshall. Loving sister Eleanor (John) Cross; loving brothers Reggie (Pat), Greg (Cindy), Gary (Ann); special sisters in law Vicky (Michael) Broe, Laurie K Broe; his deeply loved mother and father in law, Lois and Hubert Gillespie; brothers in law whom he thought of as brothers- Gary (Lauren), David (Bobbi), John (Linda); special sister in law Cindy Gillespie, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Fairfax - Gloria Ann (Barkyoumb) Ovitt-Ledoux, 77, died from Parkinson’s on October 28, 2021 after a long battle. She was born on June 2, 1944 to the late Kenneth and Jean (Brodeur) Barkyoumb.

She was in the loving care of her daughter Joan Sweet and her husband Kelly Sweet. Joan and her family had cared for her in their home for the last two years of her life. She was surrounded the last week of life with family and friends weaving in and out. Giving comfort while sharing memories. A Special thank you to her Bayada team, especially Heather, her nurse and Bridgette, her LNA and other staff that helped our family give her the gift of staying home. Without that support this journey could not have happened because it was difficult with her Parkinson’s. They were compassionate to the fear of COVID and helped Joan do the best job caring for her mom Gloria.

Gloria worked hard as a farmer, then started a cleaning business locally that she did for years until her health prevented her from working. But her happiest moments came from having family and friends join her at the home she shared with her late husband Albert Ledoux. Her biggest joy was being a grandmother, she always had a grandchild running around her home. She loved planting a garden and flowers in her yard with the help of Papa. They would harvest the vegetables and canning would go on all season, for yummy meals to enjoy throughout the winter. They had many apple trees and some ponds in their backyard. Where many apple were picked and pies were made with grandchildren, to spend time together through cooking. It was never about the cooking, it was the time spent together. The process of slowing down to their level and including them. Truly a recipe of love. Endless sleepovers, trips to Fairfield pond, games played, books read, tea parties with baby dolls. Swimming for hours in the pool in their backyard on hot summer days and “frogging” in the ponds, a game of catch and release. The giggles and memories, treasures shared and etched in each of their hearts. She was a great cook and made the house smell delicious every holiday, cooking from scratch with love for her family. Thanks mom for making your home welcome to all, through yummy food, a hug and a smile that was the greatest gift of all.

She is survived by her 4 children Samual Ovitt, Carol Jordan, Robert Ovitt Jr. of Fairfax and Joan Sweet, her husband Kelly Sweet of Fletcher and the father of her children Robert Ovitt of Fairfax, 10 grandchildren Joshua, Jessica, Kyle, Kaitlin, Brittany, Danielle, Kody, Jacob, Kole and Jarrett, 5 Great grandchildren Ryleigh, Nicholas, Jayleigh, Raelynn and Aubrey. Other family members: Tim, Jessie, Hannah and Cary, Bruce and Paula and The Ledoux family near and far. Her siblings, Janet Yandow and husband Roger of Essex, Betty Severance of Sheldon, Linda Matthieu husband Richard of Westford, brother Kenny Barkyoumb Jr. of Bolton, Brenda Barkyoumb of Fairfax, Debbie Irish and husband Mark of Fairfax , Susan Corse and husband Doug of Fairfax and their families. Special Family on Ovitt side Barb Sargent, Beverly Sargent, JoAnne Godin, Rick Ovitt and their families.

Being a full time caregiver is a hard job and I want to thank my sister Carol for the times she came and helped, my Aunt Betty when I had surgery and for the constant phone calls from Brenda and Betty it made mom happy. To special friend Debbie who called often and her cousin Bruce who really helped the both of us upon the passing of her sister Sandy. Mom was so sad she couldn’t go to the services but you came and sat with her for part of the day, it melted her heart. You made her laugh and remember all the good times those sisters have shared.

It was a tough time with Parkinson’s and the passing of her sister Sandy Cutting from Cancer just weeks before. Her siblings share a special bond, the last few years have been very hard health wise for several of them. They support one another with grace and love. Many people reached out with love and support these last few weeks, Thank you.

Gloria was predeceased by her husband Albert Ledoux, her Parents Kenneth and Jean (Brodeur) Barkyoumb, Orman and Ivy Ovitt, Brother Francis Barkyoumb and wife Carol, Nephew Brian Barkyoumb, Sister Sandra Cutting and husband Ron, Nephew Jim Cutting, Brothers-in-law John Severance, Ike Irish and Sue Cota
