General Discussion / Re: Things I'd Like to See in Our Town
« on: January 10, 2012, 02:24:19 PM »
I'd like to see the bean hole Bean Dinner brought back - that was a great socail gathering with a local folky band playing upsatiras at the Baptist building while all ate the chicken and beans that were made over a 24 hour period ( old lumberjack style - prepared, put into cauldrons and then lowered into a hole of and surrounded by hot embers and covered and cooked for a day)..... that was pretty cool and the beans were Awesome!

Thank the heavens......... and for the non-injury woods Hollow off-roading venture - hopefully the car is ok too.  A few years back I was coming home late night from Burlington - it was raining in b-town - i decided to take Woods hollow home from essex - i wound up getting stuck on the hill on the essex side of the Bog/marshland.  I was spinning tires and slowly makign progress - 2 teenage boys emerged from the darkness and pushed me up onto the straight away where i could drive - then they disappeared into the night again.
Unfortunately - as soon as i started down the hill towards the marshland - it was a roller coaster ride - managed to put the car smoothly off the road though on the right.  had to walk home to Goose Pond though - slipping and sliding at 2:30 a.m.  NOT FUN - especially it being pitch black on Woods hollow - and then havign to walk on 128 with cars going way to fast for the conditions..... scary stuff.
I almost took woods hollow this a.m. too - but decided against it because of that very night x amoutn of years ago......

An elitest State?  i thought that was New Hampshire?  :)

Indeed mkr - happy holidays - we can be thankful for now that we have the energy prices we do - and thus be able to stay warm with lights on.

It being Vermont - solar wouldn't mean you'd be totally off the grid, but in the summer perhaps you could be, even be paid for your investment.  One less dependance on the system isn't a bad thing now is it?

The difference between your choice to fly or not to and the choice of Nuclear Power - has some differences.  If your plane goes down - then YOU die - and anyone else on the plane - and maybe some folsk on the ground where it hits.  So we're talking 200-400 people tops ( if it hits a stadium then that woudl really suck and throw a monkey wrench in my argument).  then you've got the clean-up of the area, the amount of time that area cannot be economically feasable ( time of investigation, to demolish and, clean-up toxic fuel contamination, and rebuild and resell).
that will cost the local economy and communities x amount of hardship - grief of loss of human life/everyday life, environment for sure.

Now consider a meltdown... and the potential handling of it.  We're talking exponentially greater times the above-mentioned results - and on folks who were just living life.  The counter to that point is that "they chose to live here or near the plant" And the counter to that is what about the folks a county or two over - OR a state or two over who didn't bargain for the fallout beign swept into their backyard by the weather?   what about the contaminated river life or sea life?

there's more to consider than our own well-being.  Sooner or later, Humans will need to start thinking of each other on a greater level.... start thinking about what it means to live and what our rights should truly be and why ours should out weigh anyone elses.

I certainly am not rich and any increase in fuel or power costs will hurt my family and friends.  I don't profess to know the solutions - I DO know that the infighting, and bipartisan system we have is tired and old - and i don't think the stalemates and ineffectiveness today - caused by both sides opposing idealogies ISN'T what the Dudes who started this country had in mind back then.  We need some real help as a species - a wake-up call.

I know - so uncaptialistic right?  so Liberal?  so unamerican?

I'm not looking forward to higher energy prices that's for sure.  I can see the benefits of Nuclear power in terms of cost versus yield.

the points of view of the second poster, does not even ackowledge the potential disaster of nuclear energy.  If there was anything like what happened in Japan - it DOES need to be considered that our State and its green Reputation would be tarnished for over hundreds of years.  that area of Vt would be unihabitable - and thus off limits for resources economic cultivation for a long time.  I'm not sure playing the odds is the best approach though.... i don't live there and the environmental effects wouldn't immediately harm me.... so that's not my point to argue.

What i do have a problem with is the way the current organization has run Yankee.  It cannot be debated that there's been false pretense and minimization of violations and vital information relay.  What's happened in the last few years IS the byproduct of age, but more than that - negligent upkeep.  Just like taking care of your house - if you don't clean the gutters and slap some paint on it on regular basis - it'll get run down and look shabby.  If you don't get the furnace serviced regularly - it'll break down.  If you don't replace worn parts - things break.  Thus Entergy hasn't maintained the plant as well as they could have- and crap happens ( and gives folks something to worry about).

Those idiots you mention.... How do they compare to the former administration?  I'm curious?

Pepper spraying students sitting on the ground?  Even if those kids were calling the police, president, or pope names the use of that sort of force, which inflicts pain n suffering on those who aren't doing the same to others cannot be justified.  Hands down.   Especially without warning.

I guess the interpretation doesn't meet the explanation.  I know i've heard some pretty obscene and disrespectful language on church street, the waterfront, Cherry street, City hall park, and hell local basketball games..... i guess it's kinda like that thougth problem ... "if a tree falls in the forest, and no one's around to hear, doe sit still make noise?"

So if there's abusive/obscene language and a cop isn't around to hear and address it - it's still illegal - but as with many things - not every instance can be addressed.  just like Expectorating in public.......

i think the obstacle Thor, to easily getting the Castle Doctrine passed is how some folsk might interpret and abuse it... as always.  There's always a select few idiots or overly aggressive folk who take things way beyond the intended interpretation or purpose.

Folks knowing they can claim defense, when really they're feeling like capping a scumbag to provide a service to society would be such a case.

But really would the good outweigh the bad.... for a while it would... until someone claims thei'e troubled child ( who they're wholly responsbile for their troubledness) was shot and killed due to the doctrine and thus why it's too much and too over the top.

I'm on the fence here - as i would not want to be questioned when i defended my family when a scumbag tried to invade my home.... who knows what their intentions are and what having a gun and using it would've prevented ( assault, theft, abuse.... theft of items used to kill or abuse or maim others.....)

I lock my door when we're home... seen too many of them Damn CSI or other shows where there's a home invasion.... just freakin' lock your door people!   What can happen scarsme enough to take reasonable precautions such as locking the door BOTH when we're away and when we're home.

Security systems, in this day and age, don;t need to cost thousands..... a simple motion activated internet camera system - costs b/w $150-$300 - depending on what type of resolution you want.... when activated, you program it to call you and other numbers.... this accopmanied with motion detectors on windows and signs of what you got going on VIA wirelss phone connections are moderate to heavy deterrents.  - Not knowing what or what you don't have inside your home .... certainly helps them weigh risk better.  I'd also suggest drawing blinds in the living room or any room that has expensive equipment in it - again - if folks are casing when you're not there - if they don't see anything of value - they can't really assess the value of the risk.

Having issues? - Curious to see the results of your attempts to remedy these issues.  Sometimes it's a catch 22 with barking dogs - dogs left out at night can be HUGE nuissance in terms of quality of sleep - yet they more than likely thwart thieves.

Check out Minor's Post it board - i've seen ads for a local 'Guitar School'.  Jeff who works at Minors ( not Jeff Minor but one of the managers) is the one who operates it.

The neighbor i spoke with today has purchased a motion activated camera for their yard and driveway.  We've spoken to our other neighbors nearby and we're setting up a network in which if anyone approaches our houses from any direction ( road, woods, back/side yards ) we'll have them on recorded video.  I guess you can buy other systems that link to wifi and you can set-up to call your smart phone and up to 4 other numbers.   My neighbor down the road just purchased one of them as well.

Well said Thor.  When i am home- i wish i had the time to sit on the deck and watch the happenings around me... alas the gears of our society continue to turn and thus so must we.

I know the critter cam suggestion is more and more appealing as of late.

I agree that curiousity is a good thing in soem regards could go a long way.  But I aslo see the point about takign it too far.  A person walking down the road...... that would be going to far..... unless they've come from a parked car.

But then - that could open a whole other can of worms as we see people walking down the road, from parked cars/trucks, WITH rifles in their hands..... yet most of make the assumption they're just hunters.

Thor, Civil lawsuits - suck!  Thus why i did stop and why i was advised electrifying the back door handle was DEFINITELY a bad idea for that reason.
Vigilanteism is more actively seeking justice - if you want to call 'boobytrapping' vigilanteism - i'd call it a passive form of it.

Someone commented in the other thread about how they put a sign up sayign smile you're on camera - that's the route my wife took after my old-brained ( or hot-headed ) approach proved to be inappropriate.  Who knows if it worked, but it can't hurt.
