As regards organ doners in Vermont, we are amongst the lowest states in the nation as a percentage of population that is registered.  As being one of the most liberal states relating to welfare, unemployment, health care, etc., one would think that we would also be giving of our organs upon death.  Something to think about for all those who could be doners.  John Mitchell

Current News & Events / Re: It has warmed up to -15.3 below zero
« on: January 03, 2013, 09:01:56 AM »
At 6:30 this morning I had -36 degrees on 2 thermometers here at the house.  It always seems that we are colder than any one down here in the village next to the brook.  At the top of the hill it is usually 8-10 degrees warmer.  Coldest it has been in several years.  My sheep don't seem to mind.  I am just glad we are not lambing yet!

I have to say that the young man who had the problem was very very apologetic and it really had nothing to do with him trying to avoid his obligation to own up to the accident.  He simply had a mechanical problem and wanted to have a safe pull of to assess.  I was extremly impressed with when he came to plant Annette's front and assist in whatever way he could.

I want to thank all those who supported me for office.  I know we all have a difference of opinions on various issues and that is what makes our system work.  I want you to know that my door is always open and my mind is still flexible.  Please know i really appreciate all who voted today..  thanks so much John M

Political Issues/Comments / Re: John Mitchell for Fairfax
« on: November 04, 2012, 09:27:04 AM »
FINALLY we get to have our say at the polls.  As many of you know I am running for the House of Representatives for Fairfax and to replace Gary Gilbert who decided not to seek reelection.  I had no intention of running for office having just retired from 40 years in business.  Gary approached me in December informing me of his decision not to run this year and encouraged me to throw my hat in the ring.  Gary has endorsed me and I thank him and Peggy for that.

I have served the Town of Fairfax in many ways over the years including Select Board, Cub and Boy Scout Leader, youth sports coach, Untied Church board, choir member, Past Master Lamoille Lodge #6 F&AM, current BFA Trustees Treasurer, zoning administrator, Fairfax Resuce Board.  I chose early in life to give back to the community that supported me and my family and I am glad I did.

In the larger community I have served on the boards of directors of Northwest Medical Center, Ronald McDonald House, Vermont Grocers' Assoc., Vermont Petroleum Assoc., and  Business Roundtable in Montpelier.  This past year I was honored as Vermont Grocers' Person of the Year 2012 as  well as recieving the National Grocers' Assoc. "Spirit of America" Award given to only 400 people nationally over the past 20 years.

I am a Viet Nam Combat Veteran having served in the highland jungles with the 4th Infantry Division during 1968 & 69.

My wife Susan and I raised our sons, Scott and Matt, here and they are BFA Alumni.  Sue was school nurse for 23 years.  Our grandchildren attend BFA Elemantary.  We are very active in the Fairfax commjunity and love it. The house in which we live has been in the family since about 1903 or one hundred nine years.  We have a small sheep and tree farm here in the village and this place used to house a small dairy operation (6 cows milking).

For those who do not know me I think I come prepared to once again serve this community on a different level and to make us all proud that we live in Fairfax.

Many thanks to Gary Gilbert and Carolyn Branagan having served us well over several years.

I would appreciate your vote on Tuesday.    Regards and thanks   John Mitchell

Current News & Events / Huge numbers of trick or treaters
« on: November 01, 2012, 09:06:28 AM »
Here in the village last night we had about 350+ of those looking for treats.  With parents accompanying them we must have had upwards of 750 people thru the streets.  Peter King was out patrolling and it seemed that traffic was considerate.  Sue and I went to the "haunted house" in the Baptist building and it was terrific.  If you did not go then you really missed a great production by those involved.  What a great thing to do for the community.  Thank You...  John Mitchell

Current News & Events / Re: Two Special Selectboard Meeting Minutes:
« on: October 21, 2012, 07:15:06 AM »
In my opinion it is time for us to support our Select Board and the Town Office Committee and vote YES on the question of building a new building.  We elected the board to do a job and they appointed folks of varying backgrounds to the committee with the charge of sifting through several options.  They have accomplished their task.  Although there were other proposals on the table, it is time to compromise for the benefit of the larger population and vote yes.
To put this in perspective, it is less money per year than the grader or fire truck that we purchased a few years ago.  It is my opinion that it will cost us more in the long run if we do not act now.  I do hope the majority of the voters agree.  Just my opinion.   John Mitchell

I have toatally enjoyed your cross-country trek.  Regarding your last post I only wish we had the military rations available in Viet Nam back in 1968 instead of C's and LRRP's when we were humping the highlands.  Also I hope you had rope with you when crossing stream beds.  Hope the rest of your trip is fruitful.  John M

IT LOOKS LIKE THE ROAD MAY BE CLOSED FOR AT LEAST A COUPLE MORE HOURS DUE TO THE FACT THEY ARE TRYING TO REPAIR FUEL LINES.  FORTUNATELY NO ONE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN HURT.

Thanks Chris I hope to be elected and if so, to represent our town well.  Gary will be missed in Montpelier with his knowledge on the Ed Committee.  I am always available @ 849-6284 or mitchelljohn694@gmail.com.  Feel free to contact me if you have questions or concerns.

General Discussion / Town Meeting Day Proposal
« on: April 15, 2010, 03:09:22 PM »
I have considered proposing to change Town Meeting Day from Saturday to Tuesday and would like input from others.  Attendance on Saturdays has been terrible to say the least.  Your thoughts?
