Pictures of the Day April 18, 2009

Three eggs in the nest!

Spreading springtime in Vermont

ODDS AND ENDS
Posted for Saturday April 18th........................

I checked the nest Friday morning and found another egg. Stay tuned!

John Madden retired from broadcasting Thursday. I remember him from when he was coaching the Oakland Raiders. The classic story was the 1977 double-overtime playoff game vs. Baltimore. There was a timeout, and Madden was huddled with his quarterback, Ken Stabler. Madden was calling the play when he noticed Stabler looking at the crowd in the stands.
Stabler: "Man, the fans are really getting their money's worth today, aren't they?"
Madden: "I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE FANS! WE NEED TO WIN THIS GAME!"
Stabler: "Don't worry, Coach. We will."
The Raiders did win, but lost to the Broncos in the AFC Championship.

Working the split shift, I can follow the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Hockey! Yay!
Pittsburgh just beat Philly in overtime. Bruins/Canadiens Game 2 Saturday night.

Just a little F.Y.I. Birds lay one egg a day. They also will not reject the eggs just because you touch them. We should not touch them but if for some reason the wind blew the nest down, it is perfectly fine to pick it up and put it back. There is a program at the school called 4 winds and birds and nests were one of the lessons. I learned a lot from it. I really enjoy your photos. Shelly

JoeT- I wholeheartedly agree. Isn't it gopher season yet?

Shelly- Nest update- The robin was banging the window again this morning. I have a feeling why. One of the eggs is missing. I held my camera up and snapped a shot, and then looked at the result, and there were only two eggs.

In the photo of the three eggs, it looks like one of the eggs was cracked.

I wonder if those mean blue jays got to it. Not sure if they eat eggs or not but I do know that they decapitate the babies before they leave the nest.  Keep us posted.

Henry-
It's a piece of grass covering the egg. I thought so, too, at first, but I looked closer, and it's a part of the nest.
I just checked and there is still just two eggs.
