Can someone tell me the driveway clearance need for the driveway for fire trucks/ ambulance to get through? We spent Sat putting in posts for a driveway gate...and oh oh....think we forgot about the distance needed for emergency vehicles to pass. Oh No...The gate is 12 feet across.

I would call the non-emergency number to the Fire House - which of course I don't have on me right now.... Mike Cain, you out there??

I would not worry about the opening if its twelve feet wide,as most states have a regular width limit of eight feet and any thing wider has to have a placard on its bumpers and or escort vehicles.

Try calling the Fairfax Rescue non-emergency line at 849-2773.  They have full time personell where Fire does not yet.  Phone should be answered during the day.

You "Guys" are just the best!   you always jump in to help when I have a question!  On another topic.....I was kayaking down the river yesterday....beautiful day!  Then went gold panning at the bedrock bridge....No gold.....but loads of fun. The falls area still of course has plenty of rocks...thousands, but one can still get down there with a car.

What a town we live in!

Thanks all!

Yes, 12 feet is acceptable.... The wider the better obviously, and I would recommend a bit more than that- 14'? But 12 isn't too bad if you already have your posts in.  Just keep in mind that if the gate is locked it could take longer for emergency crews to gain access.

Thanks for checking!
