Come on folks. Don't overreact without knowing the facts, which we don't have yet. The info that was provided is that one 60-gallon bag per pickup is being considered as the standard. That is a HUGE contractor size bag per week. I do not see anything at all unreasonable about that as a departure point to start the discussion. The first post noted that discussion was starting and public meetings will follow. Why not take a look at what you put in the trash for a few weeks and see if one 60-gallon bag is reasonable or not?

On the morning of July 4th, people were assembling for the parade to honor Independence Day. The American flag was not flying at BFA. An empty flag pole? How could that be?
That fact was mentioned to Mike Theoret, who took it upon himself to to correct the oversight. I want to personally and publicly thank Mike Theoret for going to the school on his day off to put up the flag. Although it was not planned for, which is unfortunate, I sure hope he gets paid for his time. And in the future, I hope the school board and administration sees fit to ensure this year's oversight is not repeated.

There are different issues here. There may be both local and state issues to look at here. Is the use of the land in line with local ordinances? Is he operating a business that is not registered with the state? Is he paying state business and sales taxes? It is not solely a town issue and we can't expect the town to respond to issues not within their purview. Maybe someone who is truly bothered by this enterprise would make a formal complaint to the agency/entity that has the responsibility to regulate the activity. It may be the State Dept of Taxes as well as local zoning. Maybe more, I really don't know. Talking with the individual, and then making a formal complaint is the route that may be most likely to result in change.

I have not used it yet this year, but I thought a fire within a fire ring was permitted without a permit and that a permit was only needed for an open fire. Maybe this could be clarified. If my understanding is incorrect, then there are MANY people who do not realize they are doing anything wrong.

There are also some great trails in Jeffersonville. The Alden Bryan Foundation or Windridge Foundation or something. Go Route 15 east to Jeffersonville, take 108 south toward Smuggler's Notch, turn left just after the grist mill/waterwheel (on left), bear left over the covered bridge on Canyon Road (not into the Jeff Falls Gorge Park), about 1/2 mile up that dirt road is a 4 way intersection and go right onto West Farm Road. The parking are is immediately on your left. There are trails that go off in several directions from that spot. Some are trails, some are carriage roads. No motor vehicles are allowed. It takes a bit to figure them out, and they intersect with cross country trails maintained by Sterling Ridge Resort, offering longer and more varied trails. However, there are snow machines on the resort's trails in the winter. Let me know if you want more specifics.

Big Spike, a 5-piece (guitar, fiddle, mandolin, upright bass & banjo) bluegrass band will play outside BFA Middle School tomorrow (Tuesday, July 26) from 6:30 - 8:00. Free community concert with donations welcomed. Inside if poor weather.
Presented by: Fairfax Community Library and Fairfax Parks & Rec Dept.
With support from: BFA K-12 Enrichment Program, The Vermont Arts Council, and the National Endowment on the Arts

The band Conscious Roots is playing tonight from 6:30 - 8:00 as part of the Fairfax Community Library's Summer Concert Series. It's a beautiful evening to come hear some great music. Bring a lawn chair, a blanket, a picnic, your family and your friends. It's FREE, although a basket will be passed to collect any donations to help support live music in town. The library got a grant from the VT Arts Council and matching funds are needed.

Katelyn's folks are long time friends of mine from Jeffersonville. Her mom Kathy has taught math at Lamoille Union for many, many years. Her dad Bob works at the Union Bank and previously worked for People's Trust. Bob, Kathy, and I went to Johnson State College together back in the 70's. Katelyn was their only child. She was a soccer star at Lamoille Union High School and at UVM. She had just graduated from college and was going to school in the fall to pursue her dream of becoming a physical therapist. She wanted to get away from books for the summer and took a job in Tennessee as a river guide, taking people white water rafting. This accident is tragic. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!

The Varnum Library in Jeffersonville accepts donations of used books, which they sell at their annual book sale that is coming up on July 3.

Hey, don't forget it's your elected officials that create the laws and it's often a "jury of your peers" that determine guilt. The lawyers just feed off what "we" create. Somewhere along the way, and we continue to see this evolving, personal responsibility has gotten watered down. Kids learn entitlement. In fact, now it's almost an art form!
School personnel acted responsibly in making the police get their paperwork in order. It's the damn newspaper that created the problem by using inflammatory language (i.e., "hindered"). If the reporter had asked for the school's side of the story, and been responsible in their journalism, this whole thread would never had to be created, the school wouldn't have had to defend it's actions, and the world would be a better place.
There. That's my soapbox. Blame it on the media!

From Marvin's house, the turtle lumbered down the middle of Maple Street toward the covered bridge, stopping a few cars (thankfully they stopped), and then went down the bank toward Mill Brook. I think they come up to lay eggs in gardens...or soft dirt of some kind. I know I found quite a number of eggs in my garden one spring.

The snow is so wet and heavy that my shovel broke. I gave up and am going to bed. I'll have to buy a new one in the morning. It is absolutely beautiful, except for the shoveling part!
