With local schools (and local school boards), I love that we can request this type of information and analyze how our dollars are being spent! I wanted to share a recent article from the Milton Independence that details how this will be going away come 2016 (to be more accurate, our right to ask will still be the same, but the responsiveness and level of detail will probably be significantly diminished!). For those of you concerned about "Common Core" and the disconnect with schools today, please read this article about District Consolidation: http://www.miltonindependent.com/at-the-crossroads

I have been following this thread of debate; with many others! There is a small consortium of parents who are interested in starting a private independent school in the Fairfax area for K - 5. We are in the very initial stages and are working with the Vermont Association for Independent Schools and the Vermont Department of Education. Our goal is simple - to provide high academic and behavioral expectations for all students participating; address the learning needs of the whole child in multi-age settings through a challenging, developmentally appropriate curriculum; identify and develop the interests and strengths of every student through active, personalized and authentic learning activities. Again, we are in the early stages. However, we are eager parents who are seeking something "better" (which is subjective). Because there are no alternatives in Franklin County, we have decided to create on our own! If you are interested in this possibility (in helping or joining), please private message or e-mail me @ degraffmurphy@gmail.com We are interested in hearing from parents, educators, music, art or foreign language speakers/teachers! Thanks so much --

Hello --
You need to contact the Vermont Attorney General's Office to report Home Improvement Fraud.
Here is an information website: http://www.uvm.edu/consumer/?Page=hif.html
You should also be contacting the Vermont State Police to file a report.
Best of Luck.

Just out of curiosity, why isn't a claim being made with the School's insurance? It seems to me that the recreation club(s) should provide basic upkeep to the grounds that they use, but this far exceeds what would be considered "normal wear and tear". I hope this option is really considered.

Just because you can't vote doesn't mean that you can't go to an open meeting where you pay tuition for your child to attend school.

This is alarming. The link to the proposed legislation is here: http://leg.state.vt.us/docs/2012/bills/Intro/H-097.pdf Pay special attention to Section 7604, Page 7 (virtually taking away the rights of owners to set the wages/benefits and rates at their own childcare centers).
Tom, thank you for posting and bringing this to our attention. Good luck at the forum.

In bringing Donkeyball to Fairfax, the humanity of this event was the first topic for discussion and consideration.
As an animal advocate, we had a variety of questions regarding the treatment of these beautiful animals, including: how their life on their VT farm is (i.e. are they well treated, what type of operation provides these services, etc), was the trip from Danby to Fairfax going to be difficult (how were they transported, do they have side-effects, etc), how many games a year do they play (i.e. are they overworked), are their weight limits for riding the donkey (yes, 210lbs) and what kind of precautions are taken to ensure that the players treat the donkeys kindly (only the owner and 1 of his staff will referee because they want to be present with the donkeys at all times). After receiving more than satisfactory responses from the husband and wife who own -- and love -- their animals, we agreed to do donkeyball.
These donkeys are well fed, well groomed, well behaved and loved deeply. It was a wonderful -- and humane -- experience for everyone involved. For those of you who supported this great (and fun) event, thank you. For those of you who are concerned about the treatment of the donkeys, I completely understand your concern as I had it as well. However, please know that this was vetted pretty extensively and we were confident when we signed on that these animals were treated with respect and humanity.
