Current News & Events / Photos from the Georogia Mountain Wind Project« on: October 26, 2012, 01:06:03 PM »
Chris Santee and I were given a tour of a couple of tower site at the Georgia Mountain Wind Tower Project. Very impressive.
The base of one of the towers. The blue-tarped unit closest to the camera is what the propellers hook onto. The thing in back is the hub that sits on top of the tower. Another shot of the foundation. The tower will sit on the round cement and be held in place by all the threaded rod sticking up. Nine of the twelve propellor blades are on the job site. The remaining three should be coming through Fairfax Saturday morning between 5 and 6am. Again, pictures do not do justice as to how big these things are. Reminds me of a whale's fin. Current News & Events / Photos from Browns River Bridge and of the Wind Turbine Blades« on: October 24, 2012, 10:31:43 AM »
Many, many thanks to Katrina Antonovich for alerting me to the damage on the bridge and giving me a ride to the Milton-Westford Road to get these pictures. All pictures shot with my iPhone.
Apparently something went wrong with the rear sterring and the back end almost ended up in the river, according to a conversation Katrina had with a sheriff on duty at the bridge. Shot on the fly through the windshield of Katrina's vehicle. This photo does not do justice as to how big these things are. Very impressive. The three blades side by side on the new access road built on the corner of the Milton-Westford Road. 36

Uncle Mike's Thoughts Of The Day / Top 5 Rock Songs of All Time- My Opinion« on: October 01, 2012, 11:03:50 PM »
CHOM-FM in Montreal is having a poll and will announce the Top 500 Rock Songs of All Time according to it's listeners. The DJs weighed in with their Top 5, so I got to thinking....
And came up with my Top 5. I also came up with the 5 songs that didn't make it and 5 Honorable Mentions. So here we go with the 5 Honorable Mentions (Technically 11-15). In no particular order- Ballroom Blitz-The Sweet I was so fond of this song, that I used to leave my transister radio on CKGM during the night while I was sleeping. Whenever the song came on, my brain would wake me up so I could listen to it. Dream On-Aerosmith Back in the day when Steve Tyler could hit the high notes. A classic. Don't Look Back-Boston Whenever I think of that band, that's the song I think of. Bad Case of Loving You-Robert Palmer Took Moon Martin's song and made it his own. The version you want to hear is the one off his Greatest Hits album. They played with the instrumentation and improved it. Roxanne-The Police The song that started it all. A love story of a lady of the night and the man who wants to change her ways. And now the ones that didn't make the Top 5 (6-10) 10. Gimmie Shelter-Rolling Stones This song does not sound like it's from 1969. My favorite Stones song. 9. Who Are You- The Who It could have been this or Pinball Wizard. Or Baba O'Reilly. But had to be one before Keith Moon's death. 8.New Year's Day-U2 Back when the boys were young. 7. While My Guitar Gently Weeps- The Concert for George Harrison All Star tribute to the silent Beatle. Eric Clapton at his best. 6. Rock and Roll Dreams Come True-Jim Steinman Steinman's choral classic about how music can always be the savior. "Remember everything that I told you/and I'm telling you again that is true/You're never alone/cause you can put on the 'phones/ and let the drummer tell your heart what to do." And Now.......The Top 5 Rock Songs of All Time 5. Born to Run-Bruce Springsteen Bruce and the band at their youth...and rawest. 4. Money-Pink Floyd Roger Water's timeless classic who's lyrics are just as relevent today as they were 40 years ago. 3. London Calling-The Clash Needed some punk here and it also represents one the greatest album covers ever: 2. We Will Rock You/ We Are The Champions-Queen Origionally I had Bohemien Rhapsody here but I changed my mind. Back in the spring of 1978, when the BFA baseball team was making our championship run, this combo, which were new on the charts, proved to be our inspiration. And now the Number 1 Rock Song Ever(according to me) 1. Layla-Derek and the Dominoes 42 years later, this song still inspires air guitarists to try to emulate the one and only, Eric Clapton. And so.....let the debate begin 39

The Fairfax Fire Department Auxiliary held a fundraiser at BFA-Fairfax Sunday afternoon- a Zumbathon. Zumba is a exercise workout that is set to Latino and salsa music. It's a lot of dancing and arm motion and is really a workout. About 30 people, including instructers, danced for a good hour and a half or more. They were joined by 6 FXFD firefighters. The plan was to have the firefighters join in for a dance. We joined in for the first dance, then the fourth one, and most of us ending up dancing to most of them.
It really is a workout. My arms got tired. I did stop and take some pictures and posted them on Facebook. I took a one minute video of some of the dancing and posted it on Facebook. I am trying to figure out how to post the link here so you can see it. I had a really good time. When they have it again, I encourage everyone to come down and have a really good time. 40
Uncle Mike's Thoughts Of The Day / Tragedy in Brantford, Ontaio, Canada Over the weekend-RACECAR FOUND!!« on: September 16, 2012, 09:53:18 PM »
Okay, no one got killed or anything but if you knew these people, you would understand that this is a tragedy.
I have talked about Matt Tanner from New York State, and how he races with ESS. We've known Matt and his family for a while and they have bought some parts from Lonnie and Anthony, including an engine, I think, over the years. Saturday night, Matt and family had raced at the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals in Ohsweken, Ont. Afterwards, they stopped in to the Days Inn in Brantford to stay the night. During the night, their rig was stolen. As in, the truck, the trailer with the race car and everything in it. It happened between 1am and 2:30 am. Here's some pics from Facebook: The #90 is a family race team and are really good people respected in the pit area. everything they had for a racing operation is gone. Matt posted this on his Facebook page Sunday night: ''By now everyone knows my entire racing operation was stolen from the Days Inn in Brantford ON. Everything from motors and my car to tools and firesuit are gone, along with the truck and trailer and alot of my crews personal items. Glenn Styres has posted a reward and him and the Brantford Police are doing the best they can to find everything. If anyone has any information on it please let me know, me and my family put everything we have into that race team and really would like to salvage anything we can. I would like to thank everyone for everything they have done for me today. The outpouring of generosity from the racing community has been overwhelming. I would like to give a special thanks to everyone from ESS, PST, Glenn Styres and Oshweken Speedway, Angel Taber for posting on the social media, Anthony Cain, Lonnie Lacillade and my family and friends for all the help they have provided today." This is not the first time a racing operation was stolen at a motel. A couple years ago a DIRT Modified hauler from New York was stolen from a motel in Drummondville. The trailer with a partial modified was found a couple weeks later in a wooded area. 41
Current News & Events / FXFD Training Photos from Ovitt's Pond Tuesday night« on: August 21, 2012, 09:46:22 PM »
We were training at Ovitt's Pond, at the base of Buck Hill on Buck Hollow Road.
Aaron Sanders pumping water out of the pond into Engine 2. Sending water from Engine 2 to Tanker 1. Flushing out the dry hydrant. This is done by pumping water through the hydrant BACK INTO the pond. This is to clean out any sediment in the pipe. The end of the pipe in the pond is the swirls you see to the left of the firefighter about hip level between the two weeds. Once cleaned out, Aaron pumps water from the pond into Engine 2 using the dry hydrant. Clarification about a dry hydrant: There is no water pressure in the hydrant. It is located near a body of water, but no pressure is in the pipe. Here in the village, if you were to open a hydrant and unscrew the top, you would get water from the gravity fed lines. There is enough pressure in the town system, that you can fill a truck without the use of a pump. Whereas with a dry hydrant, the only way to get the water out, is to pump it out. 42
Current News & Events / Fairfax Fire Training with Westford 8/14/12-Photos« on: August 14, 2012, 09:54:53 PM »Emptying Tanker 3 into a porta-pond that is hooked to Engine 2. Westford Rescue 714 Jesse Fleming empties Tanker 1 as driver D.J. Leach looks on. Setting two porta-ponds side by side. With a suction connecting them, when the level of the truck closest to the pumper gets down, the water is siphoned from the second pond. Water is pulled into the pumper by way of the black suction hose, then pumped out the 4" yellow hose on the left...... ..around in back of the Engine..... ...runs along the parking area..... ....and towards the ladder truck...... ...and then up the ladder and out. The ladder is extended to 80 feet and is placed at a 70 degree angle. 80 feet is the highest you can go to push water. If you are not pushing water, the ladder can extend to 100 feet. Plus the fact that the base of the ladder is about 7 feet off the ground, the actual height of the ladder to the top in this picture is 87 feet. Firefighter Eric "Hillbilly" Smith climbs to the top of the ladder and adjusts the nozzle. Standing on the ground, looking up between Jordan Hayes and Eric Smith with the ladder in the center and water coming out. I. LOVE. THIS. PICTURE. MEANWHILE...AT THE WATER SOURCE... Dry Hydrant. Pipe goes underground and over with the end at the bottom of the river. Hook up a pumper to the hydrant and start suctioning water through the pipe. Black suction hose goes to the pump and water comes out through the 4" yellow hose... ...to a relief valve. When a tanker is finished filling, the valve for the smaller hose is opened, relieving pressure in the big hose so the end may be disconnected from the tanker. From the relief valve, to Tanker 3. Tanker 3 has a gauge to see how full the tank is filling. Notice the two elongated white objects. You can see the water rise as the tank is filling and can stop the process before the water overfills the tank and start splashing all over the road. Notice the bottom part is darker than the top. The tank is half full. Jim Hogan hooking up Tanker 1. 43

Apologies for getting these up. Been right out straight last few days. Anthony finished 17th last Friday night at Mohawk Raceway. 23 cars were scheduled to start. One had a motor lock up and wouldn't fire. One dropped out during the 25 lap, caution free race.
hanging out visitin'- from left. clockwise- Carl, Lance Yonge, Henry Tanner(Matt's Dad), Mike Mallet(The Voice of the ESS), Anthony, and Lonnie. I LOVE THIS PICTURE!! I was sitting on the edge of the ramp leading into the trailer, looked at the car, leaned over for a lower shot, and this is what I got. More shooting the bull. Carl, Lonnie and Anthony talking with Tyler Rand from Ontario, Canada. One of the guys that runs ESS is Lee Ladouceur. Here's Lee's brother, Joey, getting ready for the ProStock feature. He won. Joey is one of the top ProStock drivers in the Northeast. |
