February 2013 Events at the Fairfax Community LibraryBrr! Warm up at the library this February! News from the Town Librarian:2012 was year of growth at the library! I’d like to share some statistics about the library in the next few monthly newsletters. This information and more will be included in the 2012 Town Report as well. Weekly visits were up 17% compared to 2011, and 76% compared to 2010. The number of programs we offered, for all ages, rose by 30%, to a total of 142 programs, and program attendance rose by 59%. The number of library materials checked out increased by 3.4% (non-digital, i.e. actual physical items housed in the library), which is significant in this digital age. Use of both digital (downloaded) eBooks and audio books was up by 22%. The new library website received over 2400 visits. Wayne Senville said it best: “There’s been a dramatic change in the mission of a growing number of libraries across the country. No longer just static repositories of books and reference materials, libraries are increasingly at the heart of our communities, providing a broad range of services and activities. They are also becoming important ‘economic engines’ of our downtowns and neighborhoods.” -Debbie Landauer Calendar for Late January/February 2013:Tuesday, January 29th, 6:30-7:30 pm: People Helping People GlobalHave you heard of micro-lending before? Did you know that we have an international micro-lending organization right here in Fairfax? Please join us at the library to learn more about the non-profit organization, People Helping People Global. PHPG has been helping people living on less than $2 a day start businesses and raise themselves out of extreme povery since 2009. Memoirs come in all shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common: they are not autobiographies. Rather than a straight chronology of the author’s life, memoirs hone in on a specific feature of that life. The following memoirs use both traditional and unconventional formats to do just that.
Join us at the library for our newest book series through the Vermont Humanities Council. All are welcome to attend one session or all four. Sign out your copy our first book at the the library today! Our first discussion group is the poignant work, The Education of Henry Adams, by Henry Adams. Our discussion leader is John R. Turner.

All are welcome to join Stephen Payne, local author and fourth-generation Vermonter, in a lively discussion about his new book Cliff Walking. Stephen will also be talking about the writing process. A lifelong writer, he has published fiction, non-fiction and poetry in a number of publications including Vermont Life magazine, the Tufts Review, The Vermont Literary Review, Livin’ the Vermont Way magazine and Route 7- Vermont Literary Journal.
Payne's debut novel, Cliff Walking, developed in part from his experiences both as a former police officer and for the last 28 years as a surgeon caring for victims of spousal and child abuse. It is a unique blending of an intense and tender love story with a realistic portrayal of the hard realities of domestic abuse. Books will be available for purchase. A portion of proceeds is donated to Prevent Child Abuse Vermont.
