Current News & Events / Re: Do You Have A Bomb Shelter In Your House??
« on: December 09, 2007, 09:32:12 AM »
Okay, it's in Wyoming, but I did live in a house built in the 50's by some Idaho National Laboratory engineers.  We called it the Armageddon House, and just happened to rent it when Y2K was approaching.  There was a bomb shelter under the carport.  From the basement of the house, there was a staircase that went down under the carport.  There were tiny slit windows in the basement which were gunports to shoot out of.  The plan had been to cinderblock the real windows, and then shoot out the gunports at the enemy.

In the bomb shelter there was a marsh scene painted on one wall with ducks, and other birds.  (What you would want to see for the rest of your life if you were trapped underground because of nuclear holocaust?)  There was running water from a natural spring that supplied the house and bomb shelter.  There was an old wringer washer down there and tons of storage space.  The cabinets were painted a most horrible Pepto Bismol pink, and that alone would have driven me insane in the event of a nuclear holocaust.  There were other contraptions down there like some kind of a wheel you turned to get fresh (radioactive?) air down there, and other unknown objects.

I toured the house with the woman whose husband built it, so I got a lot of this information first hand.  The man who built the house was indeed a character.  He saved all his newspapers and stacked them in a room.  She said he hid gold coins in the newspaper stacks.  I looked and looked for gold, but never found any.  The newspapers were long gone by the time I lived there.  (He had divorced his wife, and died years before we rented the house)

The family was Mormon, and I think part of that religion is being prepared for the end of the world.  There are lots of stores in Idaho that are geared toward survival in the event of a catastrophe.  ( hand crank mills to grind grain, or provide alternative sources of energy, wind up radios and lights, as well as other stuff).  I believe the Mormon church has huge stores of grain saved for impending disaster.

An old time backhoe operator in town told us the homeowner tried to pay him with sacks of barley one time.  (they were old and he had to replentish his supply, and rotate out the old bags).  The backhoe operator called him up and told him to come get the bags of oats or barley off his porch, and pay him the money he owed him!!!!

Not long after we moved out, the house was torn down and a mansion was built in it's spot.  I wonder if the bomb shelter still exists under their driveway? I don't know....

Gorgeous!  What a great idea!
I always thought someone should get married in that bridge.  (It would look nice decorated for that too.)  I wonder if anyone ever has gotten married in a covered bridge/our covered bridge?
The simple wreath is classy!  Good work Justin!  Brought a smile to my face from thousands of miles away!  Suzy

I'm a little late chiming in, but I hope you had a Happy Birthday!!  I appreciate all you do for the town of Fairfax, and even for those of us who aren't there any more!  Hope your birthday was a great one!

I wish I could have been there for this event!  This is what I love about Fairfax.  The opportunity for people of different beliefs coming together to share what is special about each and every participant and religion.   My little town taught me tolerance, and love for community!  Much love and thankfulness to you all!  Thanks for the photos Henry!  You are greatly appreciated!

Bunch of snow coming down here in western Wyoming!

I went up there with a brand new Suburban in the early 1990's.  We parked at Man and His World (Terre des Hommes)...well, the amusement park there...I can't think of the name.  Anyway, came back to the car, and it was GONE!  Had to rent a car to drive home...total bummer!  The cop just laughed and said it was probably already on a ship headed for Africa or somewhere!

Love the light on the lawn and corn!  Gorgeous!  We had snow on the ground yesterday morning here in Jackson, WY.  It's still dark out, but I looked out the window, and it's fresh snow again today!  We've had snow in the mountains for a few weeks now, but it's encroaching on the valley!
Where did summer go???!!!  I want it back...just two more months of August would be fine!

I realize this might be the reality we live in, but it makes me sad.  The school has always been the heart of Fairfax.  I ran around in there at all hours of the day growing up.  (I never caused any trouble, I promise!)  I love the comparison of the school to a barn!  I'm a librarian right now, and understand the need to supervise the patrons, especially the young ones, so I certainly can understand.
