General Discussion / Remembering Kathryn... A young woman who got her wings
« on: December 23, 2013, 08:52:15 PM »
This time of year always always makes me think of hospice Patients I cared for. I don't know why. Maybe because it is a happy time for most people. And I just feel my patients are happy now.

They were all special. But Kathryn stands out in my mind. To make a long story short, let me just say this.... When I first met her, she was around 30 years old. She was a  very  cosmopolitan type of woman, savvy and strong willed. I was intimidated by her. As her nurse, I had to get past that. She hardly talked to me. She was kind of gruff, and kept her distance from me emotionally. But the nature of nursing kind of peels away those insulating layers. I had to reach her in order to help her. So after my nursing duties were performed, I asked if she liked angels. She looked at me like I was crazy....she thought minute and said "I don't know...maybe."

I bought some books on angel stories, pulled up a chair and read to her at each visit in her home. This went on for weeks, each night a different story. She was very I'll and was not expected to live much longer.
One night, her husband was helping me lift her up in bed. She could not move on her own, and we were having just a bit of difficulty. Then she said " Pick me up by my wings." I said " OK Kathryn, that's what we will do."

She died with love on her lips thinking she was an angel. It was Christmas time, and she got her wings. I will never forget her.

General Discussion / PRESS RELEASE from Green Mountain Power
« on: December 23, 2013, 11:53:32 AM »
http://www.rutlandherald.com/article/20131223/THISJUSTIN/131229992

Green Mounatin Power issued the following press release this morning -

COLCHESTER – The continued cold weather has kept ice on trees, causing new outages to occur even while Green Mountain Power makes progress restoring power throughout its service territory, the company said this morning.

“GMP crews and the hundreds of out-of-state crews brought in for this event are very busy keeping up with outages that continue more than a day after the storm started,” said Dorothy Schnure, GMP’s corporate spokesperson. “Weather forecasts had suggested that the weather would warm up and we would see ice released from the trees, which would decrease the number of new outages. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened, so outages continue to climb as tree limbs laden with ice fall onto power lines.”

As of 9 a.m. today, 32,000 customers have been affected by the storm. Green Mountain Power has restored power to 29,000 customers since the storm began Saturday evening, however, with new outages occurring, those numbers may change frequently. Of the 3,000 currently out, at least half are outages that occurred this morning.

“Crews worked through the night where they could safely restore power, and now we have fresh crews working in all areas. Other crews are staged at locations where we expect additional outages to occur so that they can respond quickly,” said Schnure.

Green Mountain Power says that with the ice on lines, some customers may experience multiple outages during the restoration period. Customers should report any new outages to GMP.

Customers may report outages by calling 1-888-835-4672, visiting GMP’s Outage Center page at www.greenmountainpower.com or mobile enhanced at m.greenmountainpower.com, or by clicking the “Power Out?” button on GMP’s Facebook site.

GMP offered the following safety advice to prepare for possible extended outages:

· Before outages occur, be sure you have a phone that is hard-wired and does not rely on electricity.

· Be sure to charge up your cell phone in advance of the storm.

· If you have a well, fill a bathtub with water before you lose service so the water can be used to flush toilets when the power is out. PREVENT UNSUPERVISED BATHROOM ACCESS TO CHILDREN.

· Treat any downed line as if it is live. Report the line to your electric utility and fire department, stay at least 50 feet away from the line, and keep children and pets away.

· If power goes out, turn off all electrical appliances except one light so you’ll know when service returns. Then, turn equipment back on slowly.

· If using a generator, read and follow the owner’s manual before starting it. Never operate a generator inside any structure or near a structure. Use a transfer switch to ensure electricity is not accidentally fed onto a line where line crews must work.

· Keep freezers and refrigerators closed as much as possible to prevent food spoilage.

· Never use grills inside garages, sheds or other buildings, as the fumes can be poisonous.

General Discussion / Do You Like Cheesecake? thank you Christina!
« on: December 08, 2013, 02:46:41 PM »
hello,
My family is coming for Christmas, but oh No, both my ovens are on the fritz. So we will have a Christmas BBQ. I would like to make my delicious cheesecake, but of course I can't without an oven.

Is there anyone here who would let me come and use your for 2 hrs on Monday, Dec 23rd? In return I will make you a cheesecake along with mine at the same time. it's large, about 9.5" round. I don't have to stay...all I would do is start it and prepare it in a water bath ( prevents cracking), hit the oven and leave. All you would need to do is watch that the temp is even for an hour. Then shut the oven off with the cakes in, and leave them in for another hour. Then I would come and pick mine up, and you have a lovely cheesecake for Christmas!

If no takers, no worries...I'll go to Hannafords and get desert.
Thanks!
Nancyd

Christina has generously offered her oven. thank You!  If anyone wants to learn how to make this great cake, I'm happy to show you.

A serious health risk to customers exists at an establishment here. As a healthcare professional, it is my obligation to give you a  word of caution when having your food prepared by someone else.

Cross contamination of food, unhygienic practices, and unhygienic food preparation work spaces can lead to serious diseases and infections. If you see something, say something.

I saw many violations to the Vermont Health Codes during a food prep of a simple sandwich. ( it wasn't at Steeple). No washing of hands, before or after, dirty surfaces, handling of money, then handling food without gloves, long untied hair.....list goes on... You get the picture.

You don't want those kinds of risks to yourself or your family. If you see something that does not seem right concerning your your food preparation.....say something!

POST NOTE: I'm touchy on this subject as I was in NY for Thanksgiving. My daughter had the meal catered. We all got sick starting that night. It was a violent response as one family member after another suffered the effects of food poisoning....except the one year old baby, who didn't eat what we had.

I recently bought something from a local market here in town, and my husband got violently I'll...all night into the morning.

FOOD POISONING is a serious health risk. Effects can last a lifetime! http://blog.chron.com/medblog/2009/11/food-poisoning-ills-not-just-short-term-report-finds-longterm-dangers/

Announcements / My Vermont TV Debut
« on: November 19, 2013, 05:49:36 PM »
Funny thing happened on the way to the stores.....I was out running errands today. It now 2pm and had not eaten anything yet, so I decided I would go and have my favorite lunch. I was the only one in this Italian place...Mimmo's. There was a TV crew there from Vermont Public Television. They were filming "Out and About" a series about music in Vermont. Anyway the whole thing shows the pizza man singing in Italian as he makes pizza pies. The host is learning how to make pizza. Anyway, they look at me and ask if they could do a thing where the pizza guy presents me with the finished pizza while singing to me in Italian. I said sure..LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! Wait! I said.I see a man standing by himself, and motion for him to sit with me ( I thought it would be better with a couple). He said his wife wouldnt understand why he was sitting with a beautiful brunette.  I didn't have the heart to tell him I color my hair. I said well my husband wouldnt understand either. Alas, I was on my own. OK...LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!  Im ready for my close-up....The pizza guy  walks over to me carrying a large pizza and is singing in Italian. The host asks what I love about their pizza ( never had it ), but I lie. I'm holding my glass of wine in salute to the pizza maker, and say how much I love his singing. I toast him with my glass of wine....Lights out!
Cameras stop...then I remember I forgot my fake tooth before I left house this morning.  UGH..
I hope I didn't smile too wide!
To air sometime in March, I'm told.....at least I was wearing coordinating clothes.

The Country Pantry is the perfect place for it too...

What do you think?

General Discussion / "It's A Miracle " By Nancy Hassett Dahm
« on: September 14, 2013, 06:59:01 PM »
I would like to share with you an article I wrote for a Magazine a while ago. It's all true. It happened to me. Sometimes our lives get so busy and sometimes we are faced with true health concerns that we feel we cannot cope. I wrote this a few years ago, and it has been circulated around the world literally....it was just published on a cancer support site in Western Australia.

Enjoy it, and believe in possibilities.

It’s a Miracle!
by Nancy Hassett Dahm

Miracles happen every day to ordinary people living ordinary lives. So why don’t we hear more about these incredible events? Perhaps people want to keep secret what is most precious and private to them. Or perhaps there is a fear of being called a zealot, and therefore not to be taken seriously. Or maybe as a society, we have “outgrown” our sensitivity to things beyond our understanding and control. Whatever the reasons for not revealing what would be considered by many to be miracles—we should reconsider and tell all. Why? We should reveal miracles in order to keep hope alive, to keep faith alive, and to keep the belief in possibilities alive.

Just what exactly is a miracle? The Baker’s Dictionary of the Bible defines a miracle as “an event in the external world brought about by the immediate agency or the simple volition of God.” Webster’s Dictionary states that a miracle is “an extraordinary event manifesting divine intervention in human affairs.”

Now that we know what a miracle is, how many people believe they occur? A 2003 Harris Poll survey of 2,201 adults found that 84 % of the public believes in miracles.  What is interesting is that many people believe in miracles without ever having experienced one. It is enough to know that it has happened to others for a belief system to manifest itself as a self-held truth.

It was long theorized that science and matters of divine supernatural nature do not mix well. Today, Medicine, natural healing, prayer and miracles are becoming less delineated and more incorporated into the culture of medicine and everyday life. Though there are skeptics in our midst, there are more and more professional caregivers who are willing to acknowledge that divine intervention is the reason for many unexplained medical recoveries.

Scientists have been studying the effects of prayer on the body for decades. Prayer and meditation can have an effect on the physiological function of the body by lowering stress, blood pressure, heart rate, and producing a sense of well being. People who pray and meditate improve their health because of the positive benefits of “tuning out” a stressed environment. But can prayer and meditation cure an affliction? Can prayer and meditation make miracles happen? This is definitely something that cannot be proven under any circumstances. The closest thing to an explanation is that something has occurred to interfere in the probable course of an event. The subject of the effects of prayer is gaining momentum in the halls of science where studies are being conducted in the power of prayer to heal. There have been studies conducted on the effects of remote prayer and healing. In these studies, people who are ill are unknowingly prayed for by others. There is enough evidence to support that prayer does make a difference. Prayer studies have doubled in recent years. Even the National Institutes of Health is conducting a prayer study.

When a “big” prayer is answered, can we prove it was a miracle? To those of us who have received one, we need no proof. We just know that it was. The experience is one of an internal recognition that is so indescribably profound as to alter your life forever. I revel in the belief that I was blessed with not one, but several miracles during the course of my life. When I was 22 years old, I resuscitated my father. After many failed attempts, I called out in desperation for Heaven’s help and immediately received it as my father gasped in air! Later, I learned he had suffered a brain hemorrhage and had stopped breathing. He recovered six weeks later without surgery. Another time I prayed for my mother’s life when much of her heart was damaged after suffering several heart attacks in a single day. I pleaded, bargained, begged, and offered myself in her stead—anything to get heard. They say prayers are always answered. Sometimes the answer is no. This day the answer was yes. She lived happily for another 22 years! Shortly after my mother passed, I was working as a nurse. I was alone in the operating room, preparing for the next patient when thoughts of my mother filled me (she too had been a nurse). I prayed to her for a sign that she is happy in Heaven and I asked her to close the hole in my heart as her sign. The hole was a defect that I had since birth, but this defect was a catalyzing factor that forged a strong mother-daughter love in my youth. Soon after my request for a sign, I discovered by chance that the hole in my heart had closed! I knew that was a miracle. Over the years, four physicians were of the opinion it was indeed a miracle! For me, the miracle was her sign that she was happy in Heaven.

Then there is Rosie from California who was diagnosed with uterine cancer that had metastasized to her liver and lung. She was given six months to live. One rainy day at a book-signing event, the artist Thomas Kinkade stopped everything to hold an impromptu prayer session after hearing about Rosie from her friend. She has been cancer free since that day, four years ago. You can read the entire Story of Rosie at www.cancerbook.com.

End-stage “dying” cancer patients (4.4 %) walk out of Calvary Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center each year—cancer free! Miracles happen every day- big and small, quiet and loud, known and unknown. We don’t need scientific studies to confirm the power of prayer or the power of the mind to heal the body. Prayer is powerful. Meditation is powerful. All we need is faith, courage and the belief that anything is possible!
