Political Issues/Comments / Re: Help Me Understand

Health INSURANCE reform is NOT HealthCare reform.  It seems to me that politicians focus on the "administrative costs".  Yes, there can be some savings in that area, but we won't see significant savings in healthcare cost until we start looking at WHY cost of care is climbing so much faster than inflation.

Is the overall increase due to more people seeking healthcare due to an aging population, or is cost climbing so fast due to rapid increases in the cost of procedures and medications?

Are the costs of materials required for diagnosis/treatment climbing rapidly due to a lack of supply or due to suffocating government regulations?

"and the low payments that insurance companies offer for their services."

Medicare and Medicaid offer even LOWER reimbursment rates for procedures than most insurance companies.

If there was a single payer system that determined ALL rates, with no other companies paying higher rates to help cover losses, how good would the service at our hospitals be when they couldn't afford to pay doctors what other states pay, and couldn't afford to buy equipment, supplies, power, etc.

Does anyone on here know someone who works at Autumn Harp in Essex Junction?  I'm interested in a job they have there and would like to know more about the work environment/attitudes, etc.

Yeah, cops are SOOO much better drivers than the rest of us, so they can deal with all of their distractions better than the rest of us.

Yes, they have a job to do.  Yes, some exceptions can and should be made to allow them to DO their job without extra liabilities, etc, but the number of electronic devices they have in their police cars now should require a second person (Mandatory!!) to operate them all, or remove them.

To address a prior comment about cops having a reason to pull someone over for not wearing a seatbelt - I thought VT reclassed the seatbelt violation as a Primary traffic violation being not wearing a seatbelt IS cause to pull someone over.

"The densities needed to build entry level housing at an affordable price are illegal in many Vermont Towns."

I certainly agree with that - even if it is not illegal, it is Impossible.

Vermont has WAY TOO MANY "environmentalist".

Do you know the difference between and "environmentalist" and a "land developer"?

The developer wants to build a house/houses on the hill/water front/ suburbs.  The environmentalist already has one.

Personally, i have no problem with taxing non-essential items (soda, tobacco, beer, alcohol).  Yes, I consume alcohol (and an occassional soda), BUT I can simply buy less if I choose, and thereby reduce the total I pay in taxes.
IF those taxes serve the purpose of reducing people's consumption of products that we all know are not good for us in large quantities, THAT will help lower the overall cost of healthcare in the state.  Maybe that should be a higher priority than placing a tax on a healthcare system that already cost too much for basic care.

Political Issues/Comments / Re: Maple sap Pails Being Outlawed??

If it is to "get the lead out", that is fine, but again, the action should be based on a finding of trace amounts of lead in the final product, not just speculation that it "might" be there.

This comment line was started on the bucket issue, but applies to MANY other issues.  We don't need politicians to continue making more and more and MORE laws just to justify their positions - which in my opinion, is what they are doing when they make laws based on speculation.

Thanks for the feedback C1. I thought you might have some insight.

I'm not opposed to changing things that have been done a certain way for hundreds of years.   "that's the way we've always done it" doesn't mean it is right, best, safe, etc.

I am opposed to implementing/increasing mandates just "because we can", without a sound justification.  The justification does not necessarily have to be based on quantifiable/reproducable data, but it darn sure must be a logical reason and necessary (public health, product safety, etc.)

Is the legislation based on DATA (lead, or other metals from galvanized pails found in Maple syrup)?
I can understand stainless steel being an acceptable collection pail (although cost prohibitive), but I can't understand aluminum being acceptable - especially if the legislation is NOT data based.  Aluminum has been linked with alzheimers, plasticizers in plastics have been linked to a number of developmental/behavioral issues.

I guess my point is, I am looking for information that laws being passed for or against something are fact and data based, and are not passed on unfounded fears that something "might" be a problem.

I recently heard our legislators are considering a law that would ban the use of metal collection pails for anyone making maple syrup for sale.

Does anyone know if this is true?

If it is true, is this legislation based on data of pails causing a problem?

I'm with Josh.  I moved to Fairfax a few years ago, and I continue to be dumbfounded at the cost of land here.  My parents' house in Northern NY (a little over 2 hrs from here) was $35,000 in 2002.  That is 3 acres of land and a 3 bdrm house in move-in condition.

The other house I bought before moving to Fairfax is a 3bdrm home on 2.8 acres, on a main highway, very close to the local school there for $25,000 (additional $20K put into repairs). That house is 90 minutes from here.

I find it amazing that $25K / acre is "reasonable" here, but none of us can change that.  I don't think the board should be given the green light without providing more information on expected future cost for many of the items David already discussed.  I'm sure the additional cost (Goodall st. upgrades, site development, building design/construction, etc. will cost millions more).

". . . social skills are a big problem for kids that stay at home. Mine had a hard time when they entered school and it was very obvious to the teachers. That is just as big a distraction to the classroom than anything else. That should be obvious to most."

Many home schooled kids are very social. My financee was home schooled (never attended an institutional school - public or private) prior to college.  She (and her home schooled siblings) are all more social and make friends quicker and easier than I do after attending public school my entire life.   Some people are more inclined to be social and fit in socially than others.  I think MOST parents who have the ambition, time and compassion to home school their kids are very conscious of the need for social interactions.  Many involve their kids in community volunteer activities, and other events to ensure time to work on social skills with other kids and adults.

" . .  ONLY option for Fairfax"    ??????  REALLY   ?????    Everyone should be immediatly suspicious anytime someone states that one option is the "ONLY" option.

As far as the budget goes, I'm in support of the budget.  Comparing the quality and cost of education provided at Fairfax verses against state averages, the administration/teachers at Fairfax are doing a good job (that does NOT mean I think the board is doing a good job).
The budget is NOT a vote on acceptance of the board members.  That is a separate issue for which we will have a separate opportunity to show who is really in charge, and that we will NOT tolerate underhanded actions to circumvent our input as citizens, tax payers, voters.
