Leo J. Benoit

March 8, 1934 - April 11, 2014

Fairfax - Leo J. Benoit, a lifelong Fairfax resident, passed away unexpectedly Friday, April 11, 2014, at his home at the age of 80. He will be remembered as a kind hearted man with a work ethic like none other, who still enjoyed chopping wood, gardening and working in the woods.

Born in Burlington, March 8, 1934, he was a son of the late Salime and Doris (Samson) Benoit. On August 21, 1965, he married the former Marie McMahon.

Leo first served in the U.S. Army, and then operated the family dairy farm until 1990, at which time he became employed with the St. Albans Town Highway Department until his retirement in 1996. After retirement he loved his frequent social visits to Mac’s Quick Stop, Hannafords, the Co-op Creamery and Price Chopper.

Leo enjoyed playing pool with his family, fishing, trapping and hunting. If you stopped in at 7:00 you had better set a half an hour aside to watch "Jeopardy". He was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose.

He leaves his wife of nearly 49 years, Marie Benoit of Fairfax, his children, John Benoit and wife, Nancy, of Fairfax, Gerald Benoit and wife, Rhoda, of Fairfax, Lori Benoit and special friend, Andre Boudreau, of Swanton and Brenda Hood and husband, Dana of Williston. His grandchildren, Thomas, Emily, Cameron, Nevin and Andre, his surviving siblings, Evelyn Ashline and husband, Robert, of Fairfax, Mary Shorey and husband, Dennis, of St. Albans, Norman Benoit and wife, Jacqueline, of Fairfax and Claire Benoit of Franklin, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Scanlon and her husband, Robert "Bob".

The Benoit Family would like to express their heartfelt and grateful appreciation for the support and generosity extended to them by family, friends, neighbors, the Fairfax community, American Red Cross, Fairfax Rescue Squad, Fairfax, Georgia and St. Albans Town Fire Departments and very special neighbors Jerry and Shelly Charboneau.

Visiting hours will be Wednesday, April 16, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9 in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans, VT. Per his wishes, funeral services will be private for family members only.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, Northern Vermont Chapter, 29 Mansfield Ave., Burlington, VT 05401 or to Meals On Wheels, in care of Franklin County Senior Center, 75 Messenger St., St. Albans, VT, VT 05478

Arrangements are by Lucien Hayes and staff of the Heald Funeral Home where online messages of condolence may be sent to www.healdfuneralhome.com
