PRESS RELEASE

CASE#:  13A203014
TROOPER: J. Smith
STATION:  VSP-St. Albans
CONTACT#:  802-524-5993

DATE/TIME:  07/09/2013, 2152 hours
LOCATION:  I89 Northbound, Mile Marker 111, Georgia, VT
VIOLATION:  Multiple vehicles disabled after striking moose

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

On 07/09/2013 at approximately 2152 hours State Troopers assigned to the St. Albans Barracks responded to mile marker 111 on Interstate 89 in the town of Georgia, VT after receiving a report of multiple vehicles becoming disabled after striking a moose.

The subsequent response and investigation revealed that four vehicles (three sedans and a tractor trailer unit) were involved in the chain-event that started when a single vehicle traveling northbound struck a moose as the moose attempted to cross the Interstate 89 roadway.

After the first collision, a second vehicle and then third vehicle struck the injured moose as it remained in the roadway.  The collisions continued as a fourth vehicle a tractor trailer unit obliterated the he moose creating mass organic debris.

Northbound traffic was impacted for approximately one hour while organic and inorganic clean-up was conducted.  The three sedans were towed from the scene while the tractor trailer unit was driven undamaged from the scene.

None of the operators were injured as a result of these collisions.
