In the Colonial Records of Connecticut, 1762-1767, p.172, May 1763 the Society of E. Greenwich in Kent represents difficulty of attending public worship in said society and pray to be annexed to the society of New Preston (later Washington).  The area of the parish is outlined and one boundary mentions the S.E. corner of the lot where Joseph Beamond no lives.  Joseph Beeman was active selling and buying real estate in Kent between 1750 and 1776 where 43 transactions are recorded in his name.

In about 1774 Kent was becoming too crowded for Joseph, so he took his family and moved to Bennington, Vermont which was then comparatively new and thinly settled.  He settled at the foot of Bennington Mountain and waited out the War of Revolution, which found him too old to fight, but his feelings were strongly in favor of the war.  He had no sons old enough to take part in it, as his first four children were daughters.

In 1786 Joseph became one of the first settlers of Northern Vermont and it is said that he fell the trees where the city of St. Albans now stands.  (He would have been 61 years old now.)  He was afraid of the
malaria being so near Lake Champlain, so he settled on the first range of hills to the East.  New York state is across the Lake and the Adirondacks are in the distance.  On this slightly spot, Joseph settled and his sons and daughters with their husbands and wives settled on adjoining farms all about this him.

FROM CHILDS GAZETTEER

The first settlement in Northern Vermont was made by Joseph Beeman Sr. and Joseph Beeman Jr.  They came from Bennington, Vermont in the spring of 1786 on foot.  They were carrying upon their backs their provisions and utensils for opening their farms, they built a house of logs, covered it with elm bark, and floored it with bass wood, cleared a small space for corn and turnips and returned to Bennington in the autumn.  The following year they moved their families here.  Mr. Beeman drove a cow which was their main dependence for food, he brought his flour from Bennington, of which he had the first year some 300 to 400 pounds.  This year he raised a patch of turnips and a small quantity of corn.  The next year son Joseph Jr., and Beriah came on and became permanent settlers in the town.

Jedediah Beeman from Bennington, Vermont came to Fairfax in 12786 in company with his father and four brothers and located upon the farm occupied (1882) by his son Hubbard and grandson George W.  He erected a log house and kept bachelors hall for a time but later married and had a family of three children.  One of his grandsons (the son of Hubbard Beeman) was killed at the battle of Gettysburg.

Now you may be wondering if we still have to this day, some descendants of Joseph Beeman living here in Fairfax.  Well, we certainly do and I will try to identify a few of them for you.  Bear with me for a bit while I do a little more research.  These names below are the 9th Generation.  I will get into the 8th Generation a bit later.

this is a fascinating story, Henry.  I cannot imagine spending a winter eating corn and turnips--and I would guess venison, too.  Imagine what they found when the journeyed up here from Bennington, and had to create their homes from the resources around them with, apparently scant food and simple tools.  Thanks for this interesting post, and for the list of descendants as well.

Does anyone know where the original Beeman homestead was?
