General Discussion / Nellie Broe's Roll Recipe
« on: September 23, 2007, 04:55:09 AM »
Last night at the Chicken Pie Supper some of us were talking--about food, naturally--and someone brought up Nellie's delicious rolls.  They asked me if I had the recipe, which I don't.
We were wondering, does anyone out there have her recipe?  And would they be willing to share it?

Announcements / Sunday School at the United Church
« on: August 30, 2007, 12:41:53 PM »
If you are new to Fairfax, the United Church of Fairfax is the little brick church on the corner of Fletcher Road, near the bakery.  The building has stood on that corner since 1848!   We are not a mega-church, we don't have lots of electronics, but what we do have is a friendly congregation committed to the fellowship of the Gospel.
We have a tradition called "Apple Sunday" which is a celebration of autumn, of harvest, of all God's blessings, including children--which is why Sunday school begins on Apple Sunday!
Our Sunday school will begin on Sunday, September 16 during worship, which is held at 10:45.  Sunday school classes are for pre-schoolers through 7th grade.  Even if you have never been to church, you are welcome to join our  worship fellowship and bring your child to Sunday school. For further information, contact Rev. Elizabeth at pastorliz@earthlink.net

General Discussion / Visiting Nicaragua
« on: August 18, 2007, 06:34:44 PM »
It was a bit of a shock to return from the heat and humidity to the cool, damp air of Vermont.  I was saddened to see that our two treasured and ancient maples had fallen in the windstorm, but was thankful that there was no structural damage of any sort.
The four of us who travelled to Nicaragua, had a fascinating time.  We visited two different projects:  Women in Action in La Primavera, Managua, and Chacocente, in Tipitapa.
Women in Action is a small grassroots project in a very poor community in Managua.  The women make soy food once a week to share with each other, raise chickens (when they aren't stolen), create beautiful gourds, attend adult education, and some participate in a microlending program so they can run small businesses.
At Women in Action  the women who welcomed us with speeches and games.  We walked through the settlemet of La Primavera, which is essentially a squatter settlement, the poorest community in Managua, and saw Lake Managua.  We each had lunch in a different home, and despite the poverty of the families we dined with, they fed us royally.  I was fortunate because I ate at the home of Antonio, a boy I sponsor so he can go to school.  I had made him a book of photos of my family and house, and made captions in Spanish.  His mom got the book out and it had been well used.  He proudly pointed to a photo of my dog and announced "Ladybug" to me.  Not an easy word for a Spanish speaking person to say.
Houses which hold more than four people are smaller than many people's living rooms.  Often cooking and washing takes place outside, and of course, there is a pit latrine off in some corner.  Grayson  Crounse and Laura Rigoni, two  of our travellers, helped build a chicken coop out of old wood palettes.  I helped paint at the center while Jeff Houseman loaded a program in Spanish so the women at the Women in Action Center could practice their computer skills in the new computer center--now don't think luxury, it houses 3 old computers!
On our last day there we visited Granada, had a boat ride through the isles of Lake Nicaragua, at lunch at Lagoon Apoyo, and the grandest adventure of all, explored the bat caves at Vulcan Masaya, one of the most unique volcanos in the world.
Next we went to visit Project Chacocente, an amazing and unique project in the countryside.  The director, at the inspiration of some youth, developed a community wherein families who previously lived in the horrors of the Managua City dump, could move to the country, build their own homes, own land, share land and start anew.
Eight families live there;  several families were unable to make the adjustment to community life and returned to the dump.  Families commit to learning budgeting, team work, nutrition, healthy family living, and after 5 successful years will own the house they built and live in.  The project has its own school and social worker.
We pulled beans, hacked weeds with machetes, and helped clear the roads of brush so the town could grade the road.  Laura helped with the pre-schoolers and we also played games with some of the children.
Our adventure with this project was to visit Vulcan Mombacho, a magnificent cloud forest volcano, and have dinner at the top.
If you would be interested in hearing more about either Women in Action or Project Chacocente, or having any or all of us come and share our experiences, please contact me, Rev. Elizabeth at 849-6588.

General Discussion / Another Skunk Saga
« on: July 11, 2007, 04:28:06 PM »
Last week I saw a rather wobbly skunk trying to walk in  the driveway.  It could barely keep its body upright.  It wandered patheticly to the compost heap and my husband, armed with ski pole, went out to keep track of it while I made phone calls.  I called the Rabies Hot Line and was asked if I knew anyone with a "firearm."  Off the top of my head, I didn't know a soul, so the person gave me the phone number of someone who could trap it, but of course, at 2 PM he wasn't home.  And what sense did that make, anyway?
I called my neighbor who was, fortunately, home and he came by and shot it.  I called back the Hotline and they said someone would arrange to come and get the body.  Well, they did, and I got a call today from Bob Johnson of the Dept of Agriculture and yes, indeed, that skunk was rabid, as we had assumed.    So, indeed, there are rabid skunks around Fairfax.

Current News & Events / We Move for a Month!
« on: June 23, 2007, 10:35:49 AM »
During July, the United Church of Fairfax moves its Sunday worship from the Methodist Church on the corner of Fletcher Road, to the Baptist Church Building on Main Street.  Once there were two separate churches in Fairfax, the Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church.  They merged in 1939 and became the Methodist Church.  It was decided to use the Methodist Church as the place of regular worship. But, two church buiildings still remain.  So, in order to maintain its integrity as a church building, worship is held for a month a y ear at the Baptist Church Building.
The Baptist church building is rented by the Masons and Eastern Stars and is used for a variety of community events including the local Food Shelf and historic society activities.
Worship in July, at the Baptist Church Building is still at 10:45 AM!

Current News & Events / Bang Bang, You're Dead
« on: March 11, 2005, 02:06:16 PM »
Last night we went to see the opening of "Bang Bang, You're Dead," produced by the school drama group.   While the subject matter is difficult, it is handled very well in this short reflective drama about a high school shooting.
.  The young people, especially Kyle Melaschewski in the lead role as the shooter, did an excellent job.  The directing  and staging by Sara Daniels was superlative.  Plan on attending;  it begins at 7 PM and lasts about an hour.  It will be put on tonight and Saturday.

General Discussion / those snowmen
« on: January 17, 2004, 08:56:29 AM »
Does anybody know who  made those delightful snowmen that showed up around town on Christmas Eve?  They quite obviously took a bit of time and effort, and they brought great delight to all who saw them!
Thank you, whoever you were.
