My View as a current Military Member:  It's time for this part of the world to fix themselves and maybe ISIS is the catalyst that will start them on this path.  Maybe they will start to realize that dumping money into extreme religious groups ends up with innocent people being beheaded, maybe they will step up and start to fight back on their own and stop waiting for someone from outside to come deal with the bad people they created.  Don't kid yourselves, the Middle East countries allowed financial support and some idealogical support for these groups, I seem to remember seeing news clips of people rejoicing in the streets just after 9-11.  This is really their problem and the sooner they start to fix it the better.

Now if the elected officials of our country order me to go, I am off without a moments hesitation but don't tie my hands, don't make the rules of engagement so strict that I can't do my job which is to close with and destroy the enemy.  War is a messy business and if some civilians get killed in the process please don't take me to trial, understand that the enemy moved himself into a village which really made destroying him impossible without colateral damage.  While I am saddened by the loss of innocent lives and the would always try to avoid it it the fact of the matter it's a reality of this type of war.

Political Issues/Comments / Re: Reporting from Montpelier

I think more townspeople should read the language before agreeing with Barbara's vote, and also understand that a resolution is not a piece of legislation, it is formal way of asserting a position, not enacting a law. Holding elected officials to account when they impact your livelihood is a just common sense. To stick to dogma on an issue you have not read up on belongs to the Fox Channel.
So I read it and still believe that the union is trying to use the legislature as a bargaining tool.  If the wording in this document was turned around, would you feel the same way? If your answer is no than the proposal was biased, it's not governments place to negotiate for Union members, it's the Unions job.  Do I think fair point has been reasonable in their negotiations, probably not but then again this is also a company that filed for bankruptcy five years ago. Maybe they can't afford what the unions are asking for....

Barbara,

Thank you for the excellent job you are doing in Montpelier and thank you for keeping us informed of your votes.

While I did not read the wording of the bill, I agree with you on your vote regarding Fairpoint.  Anything our legislature puts forward on this matter should be neutral to both sides.  Poorly written legislation can just as easily run businesses and jobs out of the state as can excessive taxes.  I really don't like unions and I certainly don't like them trying to use VT government as a bargaining tool.

Keep up the good work

Yeah, not quite sure where he blew in from, but as someone who has been around a long time and seen a few SI's, can say with certainty, NOT impressed in any way, shape, or form. I hate to be that person, but he clearly strikes me as a non-native. And certainly, the least friendly SI this supervisory union has ever had! Even the temporary SI a few years back was far more personable and he was simply filling in until a permanent replacement could be found. Maybe someone on the the hiring committee should have shot across the bow on this one. ???

What does "being native" have to do with anything? As an eighth generation Vermonter and ancestor of people who chartered towns in this state, I can't see what being native has to do with anything and unless you are Abenaki, you're not native either...

I am curious about Ned's comment "does not automatically mean BFA will sell its buses".   I don't understand how Ned can sell buses that the people of Fairfax bought.  If he decides to go with a contractor, our buses and bus garage should not be part of the formula.  The contractor should have to provide the buses and a place to store them to give an honest price.  The person from the state at the meeting about the buses said the contractor would rent our garage for the going rate.  Only an idiot would buy that, they will charge us in the contract whatever we charge them for rent....free building.
If we contract the busing, the buses should go back to the town.   We can decide to keep or sell, our choice.  If we sell, the money goes to the town...not the SU.
It bothers me having administrators deciding an issue that really affects this town when none of them live here.

The buses were bought through the school budget which I believes provides the justification for the school board to decide what to do with them.  Buses have been sold in the past as part of the replacement process without any issue, which also provides some precedence as well.  If it is decided to go with a contractor, the bus garage will not be utilized, this building will be utilized by the buildings and grounds crew.   The decision is being made by the FWSU Board on which Fairfax has representation.  None of the administrator are making this decision.

Dave,

The first time I saw your off hand comments about people who endorsed Chris, I thought well they have some history and was willing to let it pass.  As an outside third party looking in I would suggest you knock it off.  You're not making yourself look clever or smart by any stretch and in my opinion you are bordering on harrassment.  I tell my sons at sporting events to positively cheer on their team and not be negative about the other team,  I would offer you the same advice in this case.  I realize I just put myself in your target line but hope that you will see this post for what it really is, friendly advice.

KPPLUS2, Can you say what the topics you asked about were?  This might place some perspective on your thoughts.  The topics you asked about might make Barbara's response reasonible or it might support your thoughts and comments.

Ridgerunner,

I stopped at the SU Monday morning and discussed the buses.  I was told they would be kept in the same place as our buses, just like the rest of the SU.  I don't think this discusion is premature....if the SU is even considering cost for comparison, storage is an issue.  I really don't care what is good for the SU, I only care what is good for Fairfax.  I would like to know though...if people knew we were just on a one year waiver then would have to give up our buses, why did we have a new bus in the school budget?

I am not certain who told you that but I am not aware of any decision on storage being made. I will look into it and try to determine their reasons for saying this.

Regarding the waiver, new bus issue, while we were aware that a waiver would be required there was nothing that lead me to believe that we couldn't continue to waiver this and through this waiver be able to maintain the busing Fairfax  clearly stated it wanted. The legislature also updated conflicting laws this summer which I believe changed the ability to keep this at the district level and the ability to continue the waiver. We could not have continued operating the bus fleet we had, We needed to purchase a new bus this year to continue to provide safe and reliable busing for our students.

F.Y.I.    kpplus2  IS NOT Karen Hebert!

I know, my reply was to your earlier post about the call to the school and turning the bus around.

Karen,  I agree there is effectiveness for Fairfax in owning our buses, but the effectiveness that will be the deciding factor will have to be what is most effective for the SU.  I am certain that we the Fairfax board,  will make the best case possible to maintain the buses but we are only a portion of the SU. As far as the bus garage, I think we are putting the cart in front of the horse, let's see where we end up and if we do end up with contracted buses, let's see if they have any desire to utilize the garage.  As you said they already have large facilities and I doubt they will want to rent a space from the School when they already have their own facility.
