Political Issues/Comments / MLK Memorial
« on: December 12, 2012, 11:04:40 AM »
While I agree he was a great man, stood for great things and is well worthy of a memorial, I do not believe a paraphrased quote needs to be removed at such a great cost.

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/11/15848189-much-criticized-drum-major-quote-on-martin-luther-king-jr-memorial-to-be-removed?lite

I can barely see where the paraphrasing did not embody his ideals and the actual quote. Was there no vetting prior to putting the quote on there? This is a colossal waste of funds as we have more places that funds are need. I'm sure Dr King would agree.

This is one of the few rpg's that I've played that has such an amazing time period. It covers the early American revolution period with guest appearances by George Washington, Ben Franklin, and Samuel Adams. That's in just the first 20%. Add to that some new age tech to view these time periods and the plot is stunning. There is also a great amount of early Boston history that highlights the place of the Church and religion in society, taverns as social meeting places, and a historical view of different races and nationalities.

General Discussion / Local Farm Economics
« on: November 28, 2012, 10:24:21 PM »
Are there any local farmers who would be willing to share financials details of running a local farm? If possible I'm interested in pricing of goods and subsidies received. I have a degree in accounting and work with for profit and non profit companies. I've always been interested in the finances of businesses I haven't seen and this is one of them. Any help would be appreciated.

Skyrim is one of my favorite Xbox 360 games. It is built around medieval role playing with strong violence and graphic images. It centers around a resurgence of dragons into a fictional nation that has many subplots and revolutionary developments. The gameplay has some interesting physics for weight and uses the passage of time to trigger certain events. It's not a very difficult game but does have significant content and plot. As a warning, you need to save often due to many game glitches and unknown enemy encounters.

The game probably isn't suited to anyone under teen because of the decapitations and other images.

Reviews / Abraham Lincoln - Vampire Hunter
« on: November 22, 2012, 11:09:24 PM »
I loved this book as it was a great blend of history and fiction. It was a quick read and felt well paced through the life of Lincoln. Then there was the adaptation to a movie which was very lackluster in how the character development was paced and certain key points were changed. It is impossible to encompass a great book into a movie, but with such a clear plot line and development, it should have more faithful to the book.

The author of the book also wrote Pride, Prejudice and Zombies.

General Discussion / The 80's/90's
« on: October 29, 2012, 07:36:35 PM »
For those who grew up during the 80's and 90's, you might enjoy a resurgence of the great cartoons and toys from that time period. I'm a huge fan of games and toys from those periods. Lately, G.I. Joe has come back along with Thundercats and if I read right, Jem and the Holograms will have a premium toy line again too.

There's a great webstore called ShoutFactory who bought up a lot of the old shows and is finally putting them on widespread release DVD. There is also a fun collector store in the U-Mall that carries and amazing collection of old toys.

If you're every looking for a good quality show with a positive message for your kids, there are a lot of old shows posted on YouTube now as well. Captain Planet, COPs, M.A.S.K, Jem, King Arthur & the Knights of Justice. The animation and messages are far better than Sponge Bob, and you can't easily find toys for them so there's not much worry about having to look at the toy store.

Reviews / Windows 8

It's very different and interesting. If you don't like computers and know how to use Vista or Windows 7, I'd avoid it for now. If you like touch screens or new technology, it's about the most affordable and interesting change since the XP/7 change. Tiles open the applications and it's designed for one thing at a time. I found that using the search function helps overcome a lot of the hunting that comes with big changes. The tablets are a little pricey compared to an iPad for the first version. I've tried it on a convertible netbook, Dell Inspiron Duo, with a touch screen and it was neat.

Check around for cheap early upgrades, I hear prices might go up after the introductory period is done.

Great game for kids with more puzzles and a fun continuation of the previous plot. The new series of guys is expensive, they re-released the old characters with a dozen or so new ones. I'd recommend if for anyone who has a few hundred to spend as, by my math, it will take about $560 to get everything.

The game play seems appropriate for ages around 5-7 who understand mild taunting and name calling.

I'm not sure how many ever saw the Original Transformers animated movie from the 80's, but if you have kids that like the current ones, you should show them this classic. Olson Welles and Leonard Nemoy voice acted in it.
