Join us for themed stories, songs, and activities for ages 0-6. No registration necessary for Story Hour.

Tuesday, August 7, 5-6pm: “Goodbye, Nicole” Open House
It is with great sadness but also well-wishes that we announce that Nicole will be leaving her position as Program Planner here at the Library to go back to work full time. Please join us for an open house with refreshments as we send her on to her next adventure.

Tuesday, August 7, 6:30-7:30pm: Reusable Food Wraps
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to make their own reusable food wraps using organic cotton and beeswax. Participants will go home with one large and one small wrap. Cost for materials is $15. Must register. 849-2420

Thursday, August 9, 6-7:30pm: Summer Reading Finale with Modern Times Theater
Join us as we celebrate the end of a great summer of reading!  Modern Times Theater will delight us with their wonderful music and old fashioned puppet show. Then we will hold our drawing for our “big” prizes and have cake!

Special Concert:
Friday, August 3, 7pm: David Rosane & the Zookeepers
2018 is the year that "Vermont Libraries Rock!", as Green Mountain folk-rock protest band "David Rosane & The Zookeepers" embarks on a summer-long Library Benefit Tour to raise funds and advocate for literacy, community and freedom of speech, with the accompanying release of their new album "BOOK of ZOO". Weather permitting, the performance will be outside on the BFA-Fairfax Middle School lawn. In case of rain, we will be in the Middle School Gym. A free will donation will be collected to support the community story walk in the park.

Participants will compete for awesome prizes in this all ages tournament. We will have different circles for each age group (under 6, 7-12, and teen/adult). A hands-on introduction into the world of television.  Children ages 7-10 will have fun learning about the equipment used to make television programming, and will complete a short library themed project.  The project produced in this workshop will be provided to the children & the library on DVD, as well as, run on LCATV and stream from the LCATV website. May attend one or all. Must register.

Saturday, June 23, 10-11:30am: A Genealogy of Happiness
Vermont Humanities Council presents: A Genealogy of Happiness by William Edelglass. This program will begin with an overview of different conceptions of happiness in Western philosophy, religion, and political theory. The discussion will then turn to the numerous claims about what makes us happy based on the results of “the new science of happiness and will conclude by reflecting on the findings of positive psychology in the context of the history of the idea of happiness.

Tuesday, June 26, 5:30-7:30pm: Tea and Bristles
Perfect for all skill levels, Julie Griffis leads this painting class through step-by-step instructions to create a masterpiece. This month’s piece will be a painting of a the sunset . Recommended ages 16+. Cost is $25 for materials and snacks. Must register.

Thursday, June 28th, 6-7:30pm: Summer Reading Kick-Off with Backpack Theater
This troupe of youth actors and actresses will put on a double performance of The Princess and the Pea & Country Mouse City Mouse. This performance will mark the start of our 6-week Summer Reading program. All ages. Registration not required.

Thursday, June 14, 6:30-8pm: Fairfax Reads Book Group discusses The Dirty Life: A Memoir of Farming, Food, and Love by Kristin Kimball. On an impulse, Kimball shed her city self and moved to 500 acres near Lake Champlain to start a new farm with her husband. "The Dirty Life" is the captivating chronicle of their first year on Essex Farm, from the cold North Country winter through the following harvest season--complete with their wedding in the loft of the barn. Copies are available at the library. New members always welcome.

Step into the past as local historian Mike Cain shares pictures and stories of what Fairfax was like a century ago.  Did you know Fairfax had a roller skating rink and an ice cream parlor? It did and much more! Learn about our town and all of its rich history at this special event, cosponsored by the Fairfax Historical Society. 

Saturday, May 5, 9-1: Green Up Day Drop-in
Get your green bags and information about how to collect trash safely and protect yourself from hazards like sharps and ticks, and grab a free bottle of water or refill your reusable water bottle to stay hydrated while you are out. Plus check out our book display on ways you can “go green”. We’ll also have a special craft for kids.

Children who have been participating in STEM Club this year will put on a Science Fair on May 30th. In this month’s session, children will choose a project to present about for our final meeting and show off all the cool things they have learned this year.  Must register.

Thursday, April 19, 3:15-4:15pm: READ to a DOG
Kids ages 5-10 can read a book of their choice to a fuzzy, friendly dog. Call to reserve a 15-minute slot.

Saturday, April 7, 10-11am: DIY Zen Gardens
Learn how to de-stress and improve your focus with karesansui, or Zen gardening. Participants will create one of these meditation gardens with sand and smooth stones and fashion a special wooden ball which, when rolled, produces patterns in the sand. See photo below. Ages 14+. Registration required. Cost is $10 for materials.

Monday, April 9, 3-4pm: Crafternoon: Slime!
Kids ages 6+ will learn create colorful, glittery slime. Must register.

Tuesday, April 10, 6-7pm: Sourdough Baking
Learn from local baker, Sarah Barnes, how to make amazing sourdough breads and other treats. In this hands-on workshop, participants will create a no-knead bread recipe to take home and bake. Plus, each participant will get to go home with some extra starter to experiment with. Must register.

Saturday, April 14, 10-11:30am: Chickens 101
Join Andrew Judge from Seeds for Growth in this introductory seminar about raising chickens, both for meat and for eggs. Andrew will cover all the basics of breeds, diet, housing, and daily care. He will also discuss a recent project involving raising meat birds with neighbors to share with local aid organizations. Please register.

Thursday, March 8, 6:30-8pm: Fiction Book Group discusses Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford’s Forgotten Jungle City by Greg Grandin. In 1927, Henry Ford, the richest man in the world, bought a tract of land twice the size of Delaware in the Brazilian Amazon with the intention to grow rubber and creating an American style utopia in the jungle. It did not work out as he planned. Copies are available at the library. New members always welcome.
