General Discussion / Anyone Need Seamless Gutters? Save money...
« on: July 16, 2014, 10:24:58 AM »
Hello neighbors,
We need seamless gutters, so I researched Angie's List for reviews. I proceeded to get estimates from several companies. One company in town here never got back to me after several calls. Well, I was shocked at the variation in prices for the same seamless gutter system.
There was a difference of $2,200.00!
I am here to tell you that it is worth it to join Angie's List so you can see reviews on all kinds of contractors.
In case you are interested, we chose Willey's Seamless Gutters from Newport Center. Twenty year warranty.
Estimated cost? $1,600.00. Hope this helps people looking to install seamless gutters.

General Discussion / Hilltop Energy Buyers Group for Propane and Oil
« on: July 09, 2014, 04:59:19 AM »
Has anyone in our area used this buyer's group?  I looked at them on Facebook and there are some issues which concern me. They seem to get great prices for members who sign up for a $50.00 membership fee....but some people have had problems with not getting their receipt, which is turned over to gas provider, inability to connect to this buyers group, running out of fuel from the provider.
Billing problems from the provider, etc. I would like some feedback from people who signed up for this.
Thanks!

General Discussion / Wow, What A Sight! Canoes on the River!
« on: April 26, 2014, 11:44:24 AM »
Wow, I wish I had my camera ready...what a sight!  At 12:30 I saw beautiful red and yellow canoes coming down the river today in the rain! It looked like maybe a club. Most canoes had two people in each one. So exciting to see! Anyone know what that was about? Fun stuff. I wanted to jump down and join them....

Hi,
I have a question. I don't know how you all fared with downed trees and debri from the ice storm, but I have a lot of debri from partial and fully downed trees. Is it the Home owner's responsibility to foot the cost of clean-up?
I think I read that FEMA gave money to towns in VT money for that, but it may be for clean-up of public access roads and utilities.

General Discussion / Does Anyone Need Pallets?

Long story short......My son put me in touch with an older man who works at Home Depot, saying I could help him as he was scammed by a contractor. I found the contractor on the State's Home Improvement Fraud list. Anyway, this contractor took $25,000 of this man's money and did not perform the work. That was two years ago. I texted the. HD worker and told him exactly what he had to do...how to file a police report, what to say, how to document everything.....police went to contractor's home and served court papers.
Well the contractor paid the man back in FULL with a bank check ( I told him not to accept any other payment option. )

Update on my case....we are getting our money back too...went to court today. Our guy pleaded guilty to felony fraud....Jail 2-5 years if he messes up in Court Drug Treatment Program.  Case Over.

General Discussion / Country Pantry..in case you dont know
« on: February 22, 2014, 09:08:10 PM »
Had a very nice dinner there tonight. Grilled Salmon with mashed and veggies, and my husband had the bacon wrapped meatloaf, which he said was very good. Mine was great too. A fellow named Shawn was singing and playing the guitar. People enjoyed it very much. It was a very nice experience. I got to talk with the owner who is the chef. Nice guy. He said if people want to stop in for drinks only thats fine and will stay open if you want to "hang out". He also said he would post the dinner menu on FB and plans on having a Karaoke night on Sundays.

It was a really nice night, good service and for the two of us, it was $71.00 with two alcoholic drinks, sodas, meals, and deserts. Oh and appetizer...great crab cakes.

Two thumbs up!

General Discussion / A Little Life Trivia....funny stuff
« on: January 30, 2014, 11:35:32 AM »
You know we never know where we are supposed to be in life...getting through it and looking back can be enlightening and meaningful....and some stuff is just plain crazy, funny, disappointing, and heart wrenching.....but you ultimately come to the conclusion that where you in this moment is exactly where you are meant to be. And everyone should do it. It's a hallmark of hospice nursing...the life review. It helps people to come to understand that their life has tremendous value. It's enough even if only for yourself.

I sang since I was in grade school

I was supposed to go into the convent when I was 19...papers signed and everything..missionary order..had second thoughts when told it would be Africa....I'm afraid of bugs......after papers were singed, I went on a singing audition.. Became a nite club singer instead....so much for commitment  ...but I still pray a lot

I was hired to sing as a regular on the Lawrence Welk Show...declined because I didn't want to leave home

Was hired as a regular soloist at Radio City Music Hall....fired 15 minutes later when I had to tell the conductor I couldn't read music ( heart wrenching )

Sang at Rodney Dangerfield's nIte Club....parents spent thousands for band arrangements...instead of sending me to college. Bands couldn't read music either....they're called "fake musicians"

Got thown out of Julliard Music school..because my voice cracked after having kids...

Became a songwriter ...my songs were on radio....musicians had to take dictation as I only played piano by ear.

I allowed my first husband to tie a rope around my waist so I could climb the roof to see what that noise was.....there was too much slack in the rope....that's when I realized he really didn't like me that much......

.....and life went on with lots of crazy things, lots of good things too.........

General Discussion / A Very Proud Momma
« on: January 30, 2014, 08:49:30 AM »
I know you all are very proud of your kids, no matter their age. A lot of us read Henry's most wondful tribute to his daughters. How nice Henry.
I just have to chime in about my son, Nicholas....we have four, and they are all so very wonderful.  Life was hard for them  in many ways, but they forged on, went to college and found their path.

As older parents, it can be a real challenge to maintain a home and the property. I'm someone who uses kitchen flatware for minor repairs, changing betteries, etc. Dimes work well too......Nick is unique. After owning and operating a vintage scooter shop in Brooklyn, he found his way to follow his Momma to Vermont. He has worked to totally redo his brother's gutted home in Montpelier. He tried to get jobs jobs as electrician apprentice...no luck....so he kept working ...and  still works on his brother's home. He is meticulous to every minute detail. He can do anything now. He's a visionary. And now at 39 years old he has found a nich and true calling...He recently founded Vermont Vanities. He finds unique antique cabinets, dressers and, commodes , refinishes them brilliantly and turns them into gorgeous bathroom vanities......and they are selling like hotcakes......True Vermont antiques , living again in restored beauty for another 200 years!
Look at what he does...www.vermontvanities.com.

And loves his momma...is always here when I need him, working hours and hours to put in wood floors, fix my pellet stove, ...whatever I need him to do, because dimes and kitchen knives can only do so much.

He is Special, kind, loves people...all our kids are like that....I'm such a blessed momma...

General Discussion / Open Burn permitted in Winter?

It's tough to keep up with these below freezing temps. Ihave a fe questions and maybe Ed Roupe can answer.

Should people keep a little water running at the sinks to prevent pipes from freezing?

Should I be knocking down those ice spikes from my roofline?

I've been hearing a loud bang at different parts from outside the house...what is that? Sounds like a ramrod against the castle door.
