Political Issues/Comments / Private, Net-Metered Wind Power
« on: November 03, 2010, 03:19:45 PM »
It's good to see the new zoning rules discuss private wind turbines.  I was a little irritated to read in the Public Service Board rules that home owners with power generating units connected to the grid cannot be paid for surplus power generated, AND they have to pay all service/connection fees for being connected to the grid.

I would think at a minimum, the state would mandate the power company must provide a credit toward service fees for surplus power generated at a rate equal to the lowest contracted power supply rate.   This would ensure the power companies are not paying a high rate for renewable power contributed to the grid, AND home owners willing to invest in renewable energy could at least have a power bill of $0 each month, but still be connected to the grid for power when needed.

I would really like to hear some feedback from our local reps about the prospects for this type of change in the future.   After reading the current rules, We have shelved our plans to install a small wind turbine.  Isn't that what a lot of anti-industrial wind turbine advocates are in favor of - more small units that don't disrupt the "natural views" of our state?

General Discussion / Recourse for Unwanted Political Signs
« on: October 27, 2010, 10:16:44 AM »
With recent meida hype over people damaging or taking political signs, I'm wondering what legal rights people have with respect to unwanted political signs on their property.

I found a political sign along the edge of the road, placed directly in line with the property marker pin.  This marker is at least 100 ft from any maintained yard space (ours or our neighbor's).  Assuming our neighbors have not given consent to anyone to place this sign on their property, what rights do I have with respect to removal of the sign?  Can I remove it and send an email to the politician to pick it up?  I don't want to pull it up and leave it in the ditch since I might stay there until the next time the ditches get mucked out.
Does this violate any kind of law?  I can't just go around and put junk on someone elses property, or on the shoulder of the road (since that would be littering).

Any input (especially references to VT legal code) would be greatly appreciated.

Current News & Events / Flags for Deployed Soldiers
« on: July 26, 2010, 09:02:05 PM »
I would like to invite the families of deployed soldiers from Fairfax to label a small flag with their loved ones name and place the flag at the yellow ribbon across from the camp ground on 104.   I have about a dozen small flags available and will try to get more.  Families are welcome to bring their own.

Please place flags at the bottom of the yellow ribbon.  I'll move them to the top.

Please pass the word to any families in Fairfax with a deployed family member.

General Discussion / Seeking Landscaping input
« on: April 12, 2010, 09:25:16 AM »
I am considering planting a large yellow ribbon on a hill in front of our house this spring.  I'm looking for some input on the following questions:

What type of plants should I look at planting?  I certainly want something that will give a yellow color (since the goal is a yellow ribbon).  Ideally, I would like something that will provide color for a significant part of the summer.  I'm willing to plant two different types with different bloom periods if needed.  The soil condition on the hill isn't the greatest, so fickle plants might not do well.  The plants will also experience evening shade since they'll be on an easterly facing slope.   Worst case, I've considered planting dandelions, but I'm not sure they'll give a consistent enough bloom to give a good ribbon shape.

Is there a green colored landscaping fabric available?  I would like to get a heavier grade landscape fabric if possible.  I know there is a "commercial" grade that is 2.8 oz vs the 1.3 oz typically sold for home gardening use, but I've only seen the heavier grade in black. I've considered putting down the heavier grade black fabric, then a green colored light grade over it, but I'm concerned that the layering of fabrics may impede water/air flow to the soil and kill the flowers I want instead of just the weeds that I don't want.

Any input and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

General Discussion / Local Daycare References??
« on: March 22, 2010, 09:20:44 AM »
Hi All,

As a back-up plan to keeping our current sitter, I am looking for a new daycare provider.  I know the local center in town is under new management, but in my experience, a daycare center can't be as flexible with hours as I would ideally like to find.

I am looking for a competent, caring, NON-SMOKING, active person who loves kids and provides daycare.  I would be glad to pursue any leads anyone might offer.  I am also looking for personal references (especially good ones) about the quality of care provided by individuals.

I would also be willing to share my current sitters information with anyone looking for daycare in St. Albans.  She is an excellent sitter who we would really like to continue taking our daughter to.  Unfortunately, she has said she can't afford to watch just our daughter and still support her family. She would love to continue being a daycare provider, and I have her permission and blessing to share her information and actively try to recruit another family in need of daycare in St. Albans.

Please contact me at cedarman30@hotmail.com if you know of anyone looking for great in-home daycare in St. Albans, OR if you know a good sitter in the area (fairfax north to St. Albans and Swanton).

Thank you,
Carl

General Discussion / Want to Share Daycare?
« on: March 19, 2010, 09:55:49 PM »
Not sure where to post this on this forum.

I'm looking for a family seeking quality daycare immediately (in the next two weeks).  My daughter's daycare provider told me today that she can't continue to support her family by watching just my daughter.

I have offered to increase what we pay, but I can't afford enough to cover her living expenses.  I asked if I could find a second family looking for quality daycare, if she would continue to care for our daughter.  She would be glad to do so.  She is an excellent daycare provider - active and energetic, constantly doing activities with the kids she cares for.

I'm doing all I can to ensure quality care for my daughter, so IF you are looking for a quality daycare provider for your child, or know someone who is looking for daycare and willing to travel to St. Albans, please contact me or post a reply here.

I heard on 92.9 this morning.  There is a breakfast fundraiser at the sheraton hotel in Burlington to benefit Emergency Responders.  All Emergency Responders get free breakfast until 9 AM.

I'm too far away to enjoy, but hopefully someone here will benefit.

General Discussion / Guard Families Support Group
« on: January 12, 2010, 07:42:05 AM »
I remember reading on this site that Fairfax has several community members who are deploying (deployed) with the National Guard this year.

While the National Guard has done a great job organizing family support services and groups, I would like to start a small support group closer to home than Colchester.

I think it would be great to have a local support group here in town.  In addition to supportive family members and friends, I think it would be nice to have a group of local neighbors to talk with who are experiencing the same frustrations of having a love one deployed.

If you have a family member deployed this year (with the National Guard or full time service member), and would be interested in forming a local group, contact me here, or email me at cedarman30@hotmail.com

General Discussion / One extra CHRISTMAS card
« on: December 07, 2009, 09:01:10 AM »
Want to have some fun this CHRISTMAS? Send the ACLU a  CHRISTMAS CARD this year.

As they are working so very hard to get  rid of the CHRISTMAS part of this holiday, we should all send them a nice,  CHRISTIAN card to brighten up their dark, sad, little world..

Make  sure it says "Merry Christmas" on  it.

Here's the address, just don't be rude or crude. (It's not  the Christian way, you know.)

 ACLU
 125 Broad Street
 18th  Floor
 New York , NY 10004

Two  tons of Christmas cards would freeze their operations because they wouldn't know if any were regular mail containing  contributions.  So spend 47 cents and tell the ACLU to leave Christmas alone. Also tell them that there is  no such thing as a " Holiday Tree". . . It's always been called a CHRISTMAS  TREE!

And pass this on to your email lists. We really want  to communicate with the ACLU! They really DESERVE us!!

For those of you who aren't aware of them, the ACLU, (the American Civil Liberties Union) is the  one suing the U.S. Government to take God, Christmas or anything Christian  away from us. They represent the atheists and others in this war. Help put  Christ back in Christmas!

General Discussion / Local Butcher Wanted
« on: October 14, 2009, 08:49:54 AM »
We are looking for someone to professionally butcher and package a half of beef later this month or in November.

I thought I saw a posting on here previously about some local butchering services, but I couldn't find the postings.

Please let me know of people or companies I can contact who offer butchering/packaging services.

Thank you

Some want to be good samaritan called in a car accident at the corner of 104 and 104A.  Fire and Rescue were dispatched to the "car accident" with unknown injuries/unknown entrapment.

The "accident" was one of the guys working for the paving crew parked off the road waiting to start work.  If someone really wants to help another person who might be in a car accident, they really should stop and check on the person first, then call 911  IF the person is injured or needs help out of his/her vehicle.

Current News & Events / APB: Beloved Dog Lost
« on: September 08, 2009, 08:51:25 AM »

Our beloved family friend, buddy, dog is missing. He was not in the house for dinner last night, and didn't return over night.  He is rarely outside of the house more than an hour unless we are all outside, and never misses goodies at dinner time, so of course we were very concerned when he didn't respond to calls at the door.  By nightfall, I was out walking the roadside (104/ Flanders/Lapierre) with a flashlight to make sure he wasn't laying in a ditch (although he wouldn't walk past the gate in our driveway without a leash).

He is an old dog and we are very concerned.  He is very friendly and responds to the name Kahn (con).  He's so friendly/trusting and likes to go for car rides that if someone stopped in our driveway and opened the door, he might jump in and go with them. We certainly hope that is not what happened.

He is a shepard mix, about 65-75 lbs, mostly black with a white patch on his chest, and white hairs on his muzzle from getting old.  He sometimes walks with a little limp in his back legs due to hip/knee problems like many old shepards.

If you have seen him, please reply here, or call my cell (518) 420-7413.
