Current News & Events / Re: Lots Of Aching Muscles This Week

75?  Where you be in Fairfax?  I was out in short sleeves during that snow squall yesterday afternoon - wasn't totally comfortable, but the hard work fought off some of the chill.  Still ice on some parts of the lawn - especially near the road so i'll have to wait for that to thaw before i can tackle those areas for spruce up.

Current News & Events / Re: Act 250 Approves Walmart For St. Albans
« on: April 09, 2008, 02:07:38 PM »
This could very quickly go from a suttle toned thread to not-so-pretty one.  I think what the one dissenter has tried to point out and coudl do so in a regimented and clear cut fashion if they wished, is that BIGGER is not always better. ( let's keep that saying to the subject at hand OK - and not take it to other subjects lol)

Leave it up to the locals eh?  If that logic were to be accepted as the new way of doign business, this country would see some disstressing change real quick.  WHY?  Because locals, tend to ONLY see the issues affecting them directly.  It takes GIANT steps back and a larger more MACRO understanding of the issues to make decisions that will have LONG-LASTING implications on not only the local ecnomies, but also the Local Reputations of any town, city, county or state.  that's why we have committees f orthat very reason.
One only look to the Car Capital of the US to realize if you put all your eggs in one basket - sooner or later you'll run into trouble.  Or look at Atlanta to realize too much growth, too quickly, with not enough thought into the effects on the local people, local environment, local social structure could pose probelms that will take longer to resolve then it took to create all that growth.

Shall we look at history and see, what technology has yielded?  Think Einstein was proud of helping create the most deadly weapon in the scope of human history?  Think he didn't take that guilt to his grave?

For every good thing humans have developed, there's the 'bad apples' or lack of foresight that finds the negative aspect and exploits it.

Agreed, the jobs created, selection and opportunity at discount and cheaper valued products, and immediate ecnomic implications are a good thing for St Albans.  But not even i will venture a guess at what this holds in store for it in the long run.   I pray that OUR locals, the usually conservative and intent on keeping Vermont, VERMONT folk they've been will prevail in whatever comes our way.

-----Just my 'uneducated' 2-cent rant though.

BFA Sports Events / Summer Basketball for Girls 2008
« on: April 07, 2008, 09:52:15 AM »
Normally returning and aspiring Varsity Girls meet during the summer to both improve and hone their skills.  Not sure what the format was in years past, but this summers will consist of a 'some practice and some scrimmaging' format.  Girls interested should be on the look out near school year's end for more information.
Also, Coach Banach, the JV coach will be offering similiar opportunities for returning JV and incoming freshman.  "Always looking to help them improve their game.  If they're dedicated, then so will i be,"  stated Coach Banach.  He's worked with his daughteres teams and friends in years past throughout the summer.  Anyone interested feel free to contact the school for contact information or post interest here.

Probably looking to meet 3x a week - M W F Late day.

General Discussion / Re: FAIRFAX CARWASH HINTS AND TIPS
« on: April 04, 2008, 01:19:17 PM »
another helpful hint - don't know if it applies to the carwash in Fairfax, but HOT WAX only goes on the exterior coating of your vehicle - mainly where all the paint is.  I was on Riverside Avenue not too long ago and saw a young person applying it to the undercarriage of his car.  I thought it both peculiar and funny as his car could be considered a rust bucket by the minimalist of standards.  Anyway, when the kid, drove out and they tried to stop, it took him @20 feet or so.  He was able to turn albeit almost on 2 tires before reaching the back side of the property ( which is basically a cliff after the fence).  He got out, after soiling himselg, and checked his brakes.  A kind local told him that he probably got wax and a lot of it on his brake pads and tires.
True it could've been tragically disasterous, but it was also quite humorous as well.

Aren't the converters considered hazardous for a reason - meaning some of the components could make you really sick?

That's a great idea.  I usually sweep up ( manually - that power broom looks more and more appealing each year as my back takes longer and longer to heal.  though i wonder what it would do to my fragile grass-in-sand lawn) mine, save about 80 lbs of it for the ice on the driveway in the winter and dump the rest off to the side of the road where the run-off water cut's canyons into the shoudler.

Thanks Mr. Gilbert.  I was alluding to the issue of socioeconomic influence in some of our rural areas in Vt.  In my narrow scope of experiences, I've found something a bit deeper that i haven't been able to put my finger on.  I don't mean to generalize, but in that scope of experience, I've noticed a blatant and almost belligerent disregard for social norms in some of the rural areas I've either lived in or spent some time in.  I'd thought it was an overarching attitude towards folks from more urban areas moving into rural territories.  But over extended amounts of time, I've realized it's more than that.
I do see some correlation to the socioeconomic situation of past generations of the folks I've experienced these issues with - meaning it's how their parents and grandparents were raised.  But i often wonder how and why it came about.  I tell myself it's transference of past relative's bad experiences to their children, and then on to their children and so on and so forth.  It helps me contain it to a small segment of society rather than myself transfer it to a general population.
But, I've always felt 98 % of our own flaws and strengths originate from our parents philosophies, 1% from our environment, and 1% from genetics.

Thanks for the info and sparking my interest.

One thing that came to mind while i was reading the above was the focus of these studies.  I wonder, was there and consideration for the reasons behind students either not pursuing secondary education or at least along the normal timeline?

i beleive there's deeper issues affecting some kids today.  I firmly beleive many of these issues start at younger ages in the home and snowball ove rthe years - resulting in lack of interest and drive come the teeange years.  Is there any data/surveys that correlate family life with academic success that you could provide Mr Gilbert?  Perhaps you could provide some of that information and initiate some dialgue here.  It may serve to garner more interest and attention, and just maybe a grreater local participation in these issues.

Great job.  ALways awesome to see local talent in the news.

Coach Banach was nice enough to provide his personal Game recap blog for the Enosburg Game on 2/16/8:

"The Game we've been waiting for 2 months, the rematch.  The game where we get to unveil something they didn't see before: a team gelled and significantly more matured since the first meeting.  This team only got a very small unconcentrated dose of us the first time, they'd soon learn what's like to have it taken to them for 32 minutes.

We started out good - except for the 'nerves' mistakes ( bad passes, rushed shots or passes….. Stupid turnovers - I've come to expect them in the first few minutes)  we played good defense.  Any mistake of position on defense, they took full advantage of.  3 minutes in, we're down 6-0.  I call Time out.  I explain I'll contain their surges if they promise to come out having corrected the mistakes.  Our mistakes were VERY fixable - as it showed in the first 2 minutes of coming out of that Time out.  We went on 8-2 run to tie it up at the end of the first.  This team is physical, girls are literally pushing my girls out of position away from the ball on both offense and defense - illegal 'block out' screens to allow the guard to drive and be protected from our forwards.  Ref's didn't see much except for a few warnings of elbows underneath.  The girls truly battled out there. - 1 quarter down and we're still in this game.

We talked about mindsets, how this team is confused and on their heels now and how we must keep it up to have a chance…..  no gambling on steals unless they're solid, sound defense - keeping everyone in front of you and your hands in their face, and good decisions on defense and offense.  The press was on beginning of the second qtr, we wanted to shake things up a bit now that they were flustered - assuming their coach tried to refocus them, we were going to add something else to the equation to help keep them panicked.  It worked,  our 'dog defense' team scored 6 points.  Then the next group came in and scored 6 with some solid steals and shots.  We ended the half up by one and pumped.

As usual, the girls were really upset about the fouls NOT being called.  I assured them I've addressed some, and the rest I will.  That usually the refs talk at half and things get more refined ( we hope at least).  I let them vent then I get them focused again.  Surprisingly, this group does not complain on the court - only in Time outs and half time. Beyond this I remind them of what they've just done right.  How it's taken focus for 16 minutes and we need 16 more.  We'd been talking about the WORD PRIDE and how it pertained to our home court, about keeping it up and proving it.  Pointed out some minor weak points and went back out for some practice on shots.

Bad news is, we lost our fiercest forward and 3 rd fiercest defender ( #15) on the team half way through the second.  Poor thing she was really upset - she knew it was a serious ankle injury as she has a high tolerance of pain and this hurt.  We later heard she had apparently fractured her ankle earlier this year but played on, it kind of healed but this injury just refractured it so bad, there's a piece of bone missing now.  She also tore a ligament.  She's out for the rest of our season ( 2 days).

3rd quarter was a back and forth battle.  We'd steal it but not make the shot or turn it over.  They'd get down in our zone and then out play a forward or guard and make a shot.  We'd then steal it with the press and make an easy lay-up.  End of the third though, we go up by 6.

4th quarter.  At this point, I hadn't noticed how big the crowd had gotten.  This was senior night so  the crowds come early to get a seat.  I hadn't realized the local paper photographers.  I hadn't noticed until we started out crazy strong on defense, with the press stealing it twice to put us at 8 points up.  I then noticed the flashes and the noise.  I believe it really powered these girls from what I saw.  Our offense moved it around nicely and found the open person who made the shot.  It all looked promising.  The other coach had to stop our momentum.  He called a time out at 7:00.  His girls then came out and started shooting.  They knew they could shoot, we'd just scared them out of good shots.  By 5:00 our lead was 2.  We called a time out then and refocused the girls, explained that, the ENosburg girls just used up a crazy amount of energy to go on that surge and now it was time to put them away.   If we go up by 6 now they won't recover.  At that we went out, stole it, out rebounded for it, denied them for it, and got that 6 points with 3:00 to go.  After a flagrant foul, and us making 1 of the 2 to go up by 7, Enosburg succumbed to panic fouling.  They tried to stay with us, as we scored again in the final minutes, but it was too late.  Buzzer sounded our victory - 49-38.  ( i think that was the score)

This was a big win.  We'd planned for it, worked for it, it was something that was difficult to achieve but we did it.  It makes this season worth it even if it was the only Win we achieved, it still would've been worth it ( we won 8 though).  Funny thing is that if you look at the margin we won and then who they lost to, it would mean we could've went undefeated all season if we'd achieved the state of mind we did with this game earlier in the season.  It also means they've achieved a goal I made for them,  this brings them above .500 (minus division 1 & 2 teams) which means I'll be getting my hair cut down to a 1 " pony tail.

The season ended for the Girl's Varsity B-ball team On wednesday 2/27/8 when they lost a tough but great game against Oxbow.

Coach Driscoll recapped the events:

"It was a great second half of girls' basketball. We were down 7 at the half and we had a lot of chances in the first half, but our rebounding was off and we made some bad fouls. In the second half we just kept chipping away and our defense really picked up - Casey was tough on the boards. Olivia and Casey had terrific games. Ashley Struggled in the first half, but had a great second half. She picked up 3 offensive charges... playing with more aggression and confidence in the second half. She made an awesome drive to the hoop and got fouled and made the shot to put us up by one. They came down and heaved a bomb that went in and then made a steal. Foul shots really hurt us. We showed up though and played good, intense hoop before a great crowd and we showed people we were a good team."

Great point Logcal.  i wasn't there to hear HOW the change was presented and approved, BUT I get this feeling that neither were some of the rest of us here.  IF it was presented in a 'no big deal' or ' deal with it' kind of way, then employees have a right to be upset.
IF, this move was presneted in the context of the economy, and rising prices in every aspect of our daily services ( building maintenance fees on aging equipment, rising fuel prices, rising property taxes, etc. then i don't know how anyone could've taken it in a negative, let's screw the employee sort of way.
I'd made the point earlier that 100% health care coverage with no money out of pocket is UNHEARD of now-a-days.  The fact the town has access to a plan that provides it is impressive.  In my understanding, this change wouldn't change the 100% coverage for neither the employee nor their spouse/dependent.  All that WOULD change is a payroll deduction would be made for the spouse - which has become the norm in the insurance industry.

Perhaps the greatness of the benefit wasn't realized before, and now it's being changed it is.  Or maybe, it's the perspective that it appears as a step backward in terms of benefits and pay, whatever the reason - there is resistance and negativity brewing over it.  Perhaps further exploration is needed in order to both achieve an understanding as to the WHY of it being not something against the employee, but rather something that the town must do to mitigate the rising costs of the town operation.  I think if we turned this around, and the reisdents learned that employees were receiving such an expensive benefit, which WAS NOT comensorate with similiar and nearby towns, and which was to increase taxpayers contributions - there would be an angry, negative movement in the other direction

What if looked at this way, we let the benefit remain BUT it will be classified as 'bonus' which becomes taxable.  In turn any annual bonus employees DID receive would not be subsituted by the Health Bonus.  All really does is move around the issue to another area, but if it's such a coveted benefit, a little leeway to keep it might demonstrate the intent of the town to work with the employees to find a more amicable agreement.

Girls have had a good run this season - significantly better than last.  Coach Driscoll is a great coach with a big heart.  Scouting reports show that Fairfax has considerable talent in the pipeline.  This could make for a great recipe
