That's actually a HUGE part of this issue - the PARENT's ROLE in education.  The school can only do so much.  One can see the uphill battle teachers have when students come to school either tired ( because parent's don't enforce realistic bed times) under nourished due to no breakfast ( due to either parent's not policing their kids to have breakfast - it IS the most important meal of the day for students), or ill-prepared because good ole mom and dad didn't make sure they got their homework done or got the necessary supplies for school.

ALL too often parents look to the school for answers and don't realize they NEED to be part of the solution or are part of the problem.  I FIRMLY believe that a huge part of the childs probelms STEM from parenting.  I challenge anyone to come up with statistics that prove that assertion wrong.  I'm not saying there aren't schools out there in our country that are just failing horribly, what i'm saying is that the issue is larger than how much your school is doing for you and your child.  If IN FACT one can prove a school is not doing as much as it can, then i encourage anyone to find out why instead of just saying the school stinks or is failing.  Find out if the funding is there.  find out if the logistical and technical support is there.  Find out what the demographics of the surrounding towns are.

It's WAY TOO easy to read an article or two and then make sweeping conclusions about who's fault it is.  And it seems some folks have done just that.  Not to mention nit pick and take tones with people who ARE immersed in the situation.  As i'm sure we'll continue to see as it's real easy to be Sunday quarterback.

True - lengthy prison terms would serve to deter others from doing it, but there's always someone who thinks they're smarter than management.

A reason why they SHOULDN'T be put in prison for too long is to recoup losses.  It's liek folks who make mistakes ( either intentional or by accident ) on thier taxes.  If you put them in jail, then you're taking them away from any potential to pay what they should.  ( we're talking about anyone under 'wealthy' status)
So putting thes embezzlers in jail for too long would mean we don't get the money back at any significant pace.

Maybe some Community service where they HAVE to divulge what they did and who to regularly, might be a mor effective punishment.  I've always thought that Social Ridicule is one of the most powerful behavioral Modifiers out there ( although it can make a twisted person even more twisted) :)

There's a similar idea floating around Fletcher i think as i recall seeing a flyer at the Fletcher General store feeling out interest.  there were 6-8 names on that list last time i looked.
I agree, i'd much rather support my local neighbors than local to new england supermarkets.

There was one on friday on Goose Pond rd.  It looked like Hay that was being used to help grow grass had caught on fire - the whole yard ( 100' x 70+' ) was engulfed.  Luckily it was put out quick.

ALSO just heard about one in cambridge on wall road i think it was....

I've always been interested in trying one of these but am reluctant because of what it might do to the lawn.  As any fairfax resident knows, we've got a lot of sand in these parts and trying to grow grass in it is tough.  I've had an uphill battle for the last 7-8 years or so, each year i get a little bit farther with growing a little thicker lawn.  the road side area is alway sthe bad spot as there's just so much sand that grass really can't grow.  My fear is that i invest a few hundred in putting down topsoil, get soem grass to grow and then the next year yank it all our with oneof these contraptions.

Anyone have info to put those fears to rest?  i'm no spring chicken anymore and anythign i can do to preserve the back is a good thing i feel.

Had a fire on friday up from my house a bit on Goose Pond.  Pretty irritating when your neighbors ignore warnings and then go and burn up their yard.  From the looks of it, it could've been much worse as it didn't look like the fire made into the woods around that neighbors house - if it did.... well hopefully it wouldn't have gone far enough to burn the houses and trailers on the other side of those woods.
I'm a neighborlay type of guy, but if my neighbors causes my house to burn down.... well let's just say they'll be paying that bill when it comes in the mail.

As if the billowing smoke wasn't lesson enough, my other neighbor continued to burn his debris pile all weekend.  Not sure what he's burning - sometimes it smells like hickory - other times like plastic - none-the-less, burning at a dangerous time of year.

Jen Maxham is one of the nicest kids i've met.  Met her though basketball where she was an integral part of her team, not only by her on court contributions but also her great atttitude, drive and commitment to her team.  Congratulations Jen.

Not many of us were expecting such a great day - i'm still pretty charred, but it was well worth it.
Mr Feerick and Feerick Enterprises REALLY did The Fairfax Fletcher SOccer Club, Fairfax FLecther Little League, and Flecther Elementary School a HUGE service and good deed by giving so much of his time and expertise to this project.  It's safe to say that without his donated efforts and equipment, we would not have nearly a beautiful and refined finished product.

During the course of our work day on Saturday, several local community members stopped by to check out ALL the great work done at the FLetcher fields on Saturday and all had words of praise and admiration for EVERYONE's volunteered efforts as well as such quality finished products.

We can't thank Mr Feerick enough.  If you're ever in the market for:

All types of fencing
Bobcat service ( with Post Hole Drill)
Landscaper Design and Construction
Property Management
Residential and Light Commercial Site Work

Think of Feerick Enterprises and Tom Feericks 25 years of Experience first.

Note Below added from Upcoming Events Posts before its deletion in Upcoming Events as it gives credits to people that helped (Henry)

WOA!  We had a good turn out for our fence work.  We got A LOT done as well.  Was awesome to see so many community members out volunteering their time for the betterment of their community.  Between Little League and Soccer, there were over 100 folks down at the Fletcher fields Saturday morning and the improvements to the gorunds ALL AROUND ARE AND WILL BE HUGELY appreciated  by many parents, players and fans.  THANKS TO ALL FOR THEIR DEDICATION AND HARD WORK.

Special thanks go to:

Jay Burnham - donated a full days work and a load of top soil.
Chris Ferguson -  being his usual pivotal self, donated a full day's work
Zach Ferguson - following in his dad's dedicated volunteerism, put in a full day's work
Mark and Brenden Gregoire -  keeping with tradition and coming through in a pinch, Mark gathered necessary supplies and equipment and was there to the end.  Brenden pulled his weight and then some - certainly earned a creamie on the way home.
Kelly Quick - even with short notice managed to make it down and put in some solid field prep work despite having prior engagements
Mrs. Swanson of Swanson's Nursery - despite being knee-deep in the nurseries srping time rush, made some time to accomodate some last minute soil orders and special requests.
Terry Riggs - at projects conception was there offering his advice and insight as well as flexible delivery arrangements and lumber accomodations.
Dave Bushey - sharing interest in bringing the community the very best, put in a tough morning with Little League field work and then came back to offer his help and equipment to Soccer with upgrading the fence.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST:

Feerick Enterprises ( The Feerick Family:  Tom, Meghan, Chris, Katelyn and Peggy) - now 2 year Fairfax residents and sharing like ideals of family and giving back to the community, the Feerick Family Rose to the task.  The service done by donating their equipment, time, Epertise and community spirit is a deed that every community member to benefit from local Rec leagues owes a debt of gratitude.  The look really gives a finsihed and quality look to the fields.

With any luck, the fence upgrade and new video surveillance camers added, we'll be able to keep the playing fields secure in order to bring about Quality turf and a truly beautiful area for our recreation clubs and leagues to use for years to come.

here here Raymond.  Perhaps not a sick day for me, but methinks my 'child' will fall ill this afternoon, thus prompting me to leave work early to 'take care' of them. :)

Good question.  With the type of harassment and damages doen to that persons property, of which the monies to fix will never be recouped nor the perpetrator never to be brought to justice - Yeah - i'd still report it.
Now ask yourself the question if reporting a crime means possible personal injury to your family or kids would you?  Before you answer, think about this situation that has, does and will continue to be a reality for some in different parts of the US:

You lose your job do the economy and have to settle for something that pays significantly less.  You're forced out of suburbia and can only find shelter falling in your financial means within an urban area.  After moving in, you find that you've got either gang or drug dealer activity nearby.  you've voiced your concerns to neighbors or merely have asked questions.  Before long, Mr drug dealer or a gang member threatend retaliation for any more trouble you cause or questions asked.  So when you actually see a drug deal, or something else, you're facing the same question you just posed.

Now answer it - beingmindful standing up for your beleifs could mean bodily harm to tyourself or worse your kids.

we're not in an area like that, our demographics here in fairfax have changed in the past 5 years and will continue to do so, but there still remains elements in our community that feel above the law, if not antagonistic of it, and certainly don't think or care about others around them.  I've seen and dealt with this rural ignorant behavior first hand in the past and no doubt will again in the future despite what the already thought out ramifications will be - but one can't discount others of lesser fortitude's courage in like matters and wish to be left alone.

Not everyone has that sort of courage and integrity.  And protection of loved ones and property is a huge issue.  A more powerful tool for those would be a public support group - namely verbal and physical support for those in such situations.  Something to give them a feeling of 'back-up' and safety in numbers - something to comfort and give the courage needed.  I do beleive that's where neighborhood watches came from.

At topical glance, and not reading that article you provided a link to, i'd have said makes sense to have 4 year terms for the very reasons offered in support of it.

But, i'd like to see ALL the reasoning behind why folks oppose it.  I don't feel the article provided offered enough of the otherside for ANYONE to make an educated opinion, much less a non-partisaned one.  The little info offered on the opposing side DID cite 1 important reason - which was that the legislature was out of sesson for 7-8 months of the year.  That alone woudl constitue and imbalance of power - we have different branches of govenrment specifically to ensure the overall voice of the citizens, traditional law, and modern interpretation of the law aren't trumped enroute to what, in reality may be a small fraction of the many, may seem as appropriate.

I'd be interested in seeing ALL 'opposing' and 'in support of' arguments are before i decided - wouldn't everyone?

hmmmmmm.... this subject interests me not so much by the brush fire aspect, but more so due to the legality of burning without a permit.  Does anyone have any info on how many complaints are issued a year for illegal burning?

What are the penalties for being caught burning without a permit?  for being caught burning household items such as cardboard, plastic and other 'non-ntaural' items?

Who enforces the law and are they bound by any confidentiality agreements?

This interests me because i know of a local Fairfax resident who reported a relevant incident to town authorities and was guaranteed confidentiality, yet was confronted by the person who was involved in the incident ( they said they were told who reported them).  The resident who reported the incident had to endure months of harassment and even some vandalism afterwards due to the breach.
If there's no confidentiality involved, i know i myself would be hesitant to report such things for fear of retribution as well.  It really is counter-productiive to the goal of the law and rules - and also allows those who don't care to get away with whatever they want while others abide by the rules.  Thus creating malcontent.

WHO should illegal burning incidents be reported to that will guarantee confidentiality? I really don't have a problem with folks responsibly burning 'Natural items' as long as they're responsible about it - unless it poses potential threat to my domicile.  I guess that's the main point i want to make - bruning recklessly or burning toxic things that waft into my property and thus contaminate my air quality is something that shoudl be strictly enforced as losing a house or property or getting sick due to others ignorance is all around a bad thing

Great questions Mr Gilbert.  I share the concern of putting too much politics into education.  By replacing the board with a position appointed by the Govenor, we're walking inviting more instability into the system.  IF ANYTHING, there should be expaned action moving towars forming long-term goals that can be worked towards each year.  Thus adding more and more stability and consistency and thus moving progressively forward.  Not saying that this can't be done with an appointed position - just i can forsee turblence when you add individual agendas of the coming and going of govenors from different parties.  Vermont is positively progressive in many ways, i hope this divergence from the norm over 48 states, will keep with that trend.
we'll see what happens - and if things DO begin to sour, i'm sure our citizens will step up and do what it takes to make it right.
