Guess it's not today.  Another rumor is that it will be on the 22nd of January.  From WCAX.com:

It appears to be business as usual today at IBM.

Employees coming off their shifts this morning said there had been no announced layoffs-- deflecting widespread rumors that job cuts were coming.

Yesterday some contract workers were cut. IBM spokesman Jeff Couture said several contracts have been eliminated or reduced as a cost-saving measure. Those contracted employees handle such things as security, cleaning, delivery and administrative services.

General Discussion / Re: stolen recycling bin
« on: January 02, 2009, 01:47:23 PM »
I have not heard of anybody stealing recycle bins in town.  I did however see one in a ditch on 104 (just north of Nan's Mobil).  I assumed the wind blew it across the road from one of the houses on the other side of the road but it could have been abandoned by somebody who stole it.  This was about two weeks ago.

Henry,

If I could make a recommendation would it be possible to add a location on your forum specifically for fundraiser information?  I know that individuals often post this information on your forum but maybe it would be helpful for everybody if there was a specific location titled "Fundraiser Information" or something like that.

Just a thought.

Thank-you, CJB.  I agree w/you.  I just have a couple of more points to make on this and then I'll shut up!

1)  If I choose to send my child to full-day kindergarten that does not make me an irresponsible parent!  That makes me concerned for my child's future.
2)  By offering full day kindergaren in some instances you will prevent having children repeat a grade.  That would be an added expense of those children spending an extra year in the Fairfax school system.  I believe there are currently 12 children participating in afternoon kindergaten session.  Without this session these 12 children would be in danger of having to repeat kindergarten or other grades later on.
3)  And in response to the $400 a month private school issue:  Using this same belief couldn't we say that the town should no longer fund the sports program?  If parents would like for their children to continue to participate in sports than they should cover all expenses involved?  As a tax payer why should I be responsible for these children participating in sports if my child does not?  I understand that times are hard financially for all right now but can we really say that we shouldn't cover an expense because not everybody will benefit from it?  I can think of many programs that the town currently funds but that I do not utilize but that doesn't mean that I think we should do away with the funding.

128
Maybe it is selfish to ask town tax payers to pay for this additional program at this time.  However, if we're not going to approve this program maybe we should look at cutting out unnecessary expenses in the school budget.  Maybe we should do an across the board review of what is being paid for.  Should we cut out say the sports programs, music program, art program, field trips?  I'm not for cutting any of these but if we aren't able to fund a full time kindergarten program at this time because of the state of our economy perhaps there are other things that can be cut for the time being as well.  Just a thought.

I agree that full day kindergarten should be optional and not a requirement.

As stated by the anonymous writer of the above letter this year they started an afternoon session for children "at risk".  As the parent of one of those children I feel that even though it has only been a month since it started my child is greatly benefiting from this extra time.  The afternoon sessions have less children and hence they receive more one on one time w/the teachers.

It is my understanding that children were selected for these afternoon sessions because they were very close to being where they needed to be academically but just needed a little extra attention to get them to where they should be.

Although my child is benefiting from this program I realize that other children do not need this extra time or may not be able to handle the full day schedule.  Hence, this should be an optional program.

Even if my child were not currently participating in the full day kindergarten I would support this program.  I feel that giving our children the best start possible is the most important thing.  Maybe we should look at other options for cutting back on the budget.  I just do not feel that it should be at the expense of our children's education.

I just pulled these #s off from the WCAX website.  It says results as of 9:18 AM this morning but not sure if that's when they updated them on their site or if they're up to date results.  Anyway, looks like a close one>

If you are a member of New England Federal Credit Union they have posted the following to their site:
Hannaford Card Compromise
On 3/17, Hannaford made an announcement that they have experienced a security breach. Some NEFCU credit and debit cards are affected, however we have reviewed available details concerning this event and want to let you know it is fine to continue using your NEFCU cards. Be assured that we are actively monitoring the activity on your account to protect you from fraud.

In the rare event fraud does occur, as a Visa debit or credit cardholder you are protected with Visa’s Zero Liability policy, which means you pay nothing for unauthorized purchases on your account. Although certain account data has been exposed in this incident, that does not necessarily mean that data related to your account was taken or that fraud has occurred on your account.

Within the next week, NEFCU will send a letter to each member whose cards were affected.  To ensure this matter is completely cleared up for our members, we will reissue affected cards, and the letter will explain when you can expect a new card.

As always, we strongly encourage you to review your accounts on PC Banking regularly and to look closely at your monthly statements, and call us immediately if you see any suspicious activity.

If you have questions, please contact us online or call us at 800 400 8790

So do I.  I had to get a new debit card when the same thing happened at TJMaxx.  I'm sure I will yet again.  Kind of makes me want to take all of my $$ out of the bank & use cash.

I for one would like to applaud the work of every town employee.  They work very hard in whatever task they are responsible for.  Our town road crew is perhaps one of the best in the state (my opinion).  I also know how hard the members of the fire dept. work and the sacrifices they make in order to volunteer their time.

However, is it realistic in today's economy to expect for your employer (be that of private or municipal govt.) to pay 100% of your health coverage?  If you were a private company you would be out of business if you followed this practice.  Unfortunately with today's economy we are forced to make these sort of decisions.
